Warhammer - Buying the game, finding the exe didn't work and the game wouldn't install. Trawling the web, finding a solution, downloading the exe from the demo, installing the game and getting to play it.
Warhammer - Doing all the above and then finding out the game was a WoW-clone that didn't even have the decency to copy the things WoW did without fekking most of them up royally.
Eve - Playing the game. Utterly, unspeakably, spirit-crushingly tedious. I'd rather play Warhammer. If I could get the bastard to install again.
Planetside - I lived in the sticks and only had dial-up. Yeah... No idea to this day if it was good or bad but trying to play it was.. painful.
The ruptured capillaries in your nose belie the clarity of your wisdom.
EQ1 - Getting on the boat to Kunark in Butcherblock Mountains and lagging off the boat into the water of Timorous Deep and watching the boat sail off. Oh and no maps.
Running from South Qeynos to Greater Faydark and getting one shotted by a red before you can rebind
haha i remember the falling off the boat days! i was playing on my awesome computer with 64mbs of ram and using AOL dial up. zoning took me centuries. and i usually always ended up in the water watching the boat sail off. but i actually got a lot of entertainment from that
and i liked the long runs then getting raped in the face right before my destination. it made me very very wary of my surroundings when i traveled.
now in any mmo out these days i can just run from place to place without even worrying about shit because even if a mob does agro me it will just fall off after a few yards.
Ever been thinking of going back to some beloved game? Reveling with a buddy over the nostalgia of how awesome it was, and how games aren't like they used to be, when suddenly you remember one of the ACTUAL tasks and are like, "OMG NOOOO!",throw up a little in your mouth, and say screw it because you remember some gameplay mechanic/experience that just turned you off forever?
Thought it would be interesting to see what people absolutely hated/despised about their MMO games to the point it makes your brain scramble to GTFO of your skull before being made to do that again. Here's some of mine off the top of my head.
EQ2: Heritage Quests...
EQ1: Camping specific species of animal to extinction, or at least what should have been extinction.
AC1: The death animation and sound effect followed by the portal...permanaently scarred with both the humour of it and the pain of knowing I had no idea where I died...oh and finding my last taper...
WoW: Quest hubs...I swear to god I'm never playing another game where I have to run around mindlessly clicking ! people to then just follow waypoints.
AC1... Oh lord, can I get back down there with the extra sets of armor and weapons I have in the vault, or do I have to write it off...Again?...
WoW PvP server... These clowns HAVE to get bored of this nonsense eventually(while corpse camped by groups of MUCH higher levels with high end gear). They also had some of their buddies spread out around the rez spots. It got really unpleasant.
Eve online (early years). Crash to Desk Top...Ok what ship did I lose this time? But thats been happening less and less over the years.
LOTR... Why did it have to be wolves?(face palm). Not to mention that since one of their graphics upgrades, I can't run that or Dungeons and Dragons online without getting a BSD 116 error(even with the most recent drivers). This has gone on for more than a year and a half now.
Anarchy Online... One of the absolute WORST launches in major MMO history. The game wasn't even playable for the first few weeks. What sticks out in my mine about later, when it could be played was someone yelling "Train!!"... And everyone runs like hell.
The HORRIBLE grinding of the all too many Asian F2P games I've tried over the years(eyes bleed just from the memories).
Last but certainly not least(I've played WAY too many MMO's to go into here) SWG NGE. If there is ANY justice in the universe, there is a nice "warm" spot in the Abyss with dear old Smed's name on it.
WAR : first time ever I paid for a game (a preorder) I could not play at all, while my friends were starting a guild... all this due to the crazy stuttering and Mythic's poor engine optimization.
WoW : I grinded to the very top stuff like 2-3 times, but two months ago it's gone and you have to redo it all. I cant take it anymore.
Aion : L2 pve was nothing but chain bashing mobs, it was fine when I did it because it was my first big MMO 6 years ago, and pvp & politics were crazy back then. But since then I cant chain bash mobs anymore. Last time I failed at this was in Aion.
WoW leveling system : solo questing. It doesnt encourage grouping, actually it pretty much promotes solo only as the most efficient leveling path. And also seeing more and more games each year taking this direction (Champions online for example that would have been so much better as a team focused game like CoX rather than a solo questing game).
EQ- going into befallen for the 1st time and falling down the well...... This was at release so NOBODY was gonna help me get my banded back. I deleted my toon I was so pissed off and didn't restart playing for a week.

lol awesome...I feel your pain...back when normal banded meant something...
UO,AC1&2,EQ1&2,DAOC,SB,SWG,FFXI, Horizons,EvE,E&B,AO,WoW,VG, Lineage,GW,TR,LotR,AoC,CoH,DDO a myriad of FtP...and still looking...
Step 1--Bought the game and strategy guide, read the wizard class description "the unrivaled master of magical damage" and saw almost nothing but magical damage spells. Aha I thought, this is the class for me.
Step 2--Noticing that other classes could nuke about the same as my wizard while also being also able to cast handy spells like pets and heals for example.
Step 3--Using the first parsing programs to check my damage against other DPS classes and realizing my wizard was getting plowed by melees--and other casters.
Step 4--Being told over and over on the wizard message board that quading was fun. Something about 10 minutes of downtime between pulls and camping for jboots didn't seem like fun for me.
Step 5--Being told that wizards were weak until they started raiding.
Step 6--Realizing I didn't have the time or inclination for raiding and that the developers were obsessed with raiding.
Step 7--Two frustrating years of off and on playing later, clicking on the "necromancer" tab in the character select screen.
Lesson learned: Never get too attached to a class in a MMO. The developers will always have their "vision" and neither factual evidence nor common sense will change their mind on the design of a class. If one class doesn't work for you and nothing ever seems to change with it, find a different class you can enjoy playing.
