I just need a name, so I can cross it off my list of upcoming releases in which I have interest.
The only name you need is Cryptic, that should be enough! This guy is turning into the new Smedley, wrecking IPs and trying to squeeze blood from a stone when it comes to fleecing the playerbase.
It is funny how many people are drawing similarities to SOE/Smed and Cryptic.
Then again look who is in charge of Cryptic and where his background comes from.
John Needham brings years of business development and financial experience in the entertainment and gaming industries to Cryptic Studios. A graduate of San Diego State University, John began his career at Arthur Anderson and Co. John later held several positions in the television division at Sony Pictures Entertainment, including director of corporate development and vice president of finance for Telemundo Networks. Moving to Sony Online Entertainment in 2001, John served as senior vice president of business development, focusing on international expansion and the formation of a cross-platform publishing, distribution and marketing label. He later managed business development, strategic initiatives, international operations, customer service and quality assurance for SOE as senior vice president of business development and operations. At Cryptic, John provides executive leadership to all departments and will guide the company as it expands from a development house to an international publisher of MMOGs

I notice no gaming credentials at all. This is probably the biggest problem in the industry. Now that MMOs are big money, people who don't give a damn about games are crawling out of the woodwork to get a piece of the pie.

If coursae he's going to come out and say that he's fine tuning the game now. The thing that Cryptic excels at is hype. They will get the PR machine into overdrive to get people excited about the game. Then they will have a "closed beta" which will consist of very limited playtests so that no one gets "burned out", a short 3 week Open beta where they continue to add features at the last minute while at the same time pushing a whole bunch of pre prder offers and lifetime subs. Then the game will launch, it will look fancy and pretty...until you dig beneath the surface and find that there is no depth to the game at all.
Let's put it another way. I would rather go back to Star Wars Galaxies then play a new Cryptic Game.
For those who haven't been following, it has been long rumored that Cryptic Studios is working on a new MMO set in the Forgotten Realms D&D campaign. Not much longer until we find out!
I am not happy with Cryptic Studios and might avoid their games, And with how D&D is changed in recent years I would be happy to avoid D&D based titles as well. And I blame marketing gurus for some of the problems. They tend to ruin a lot of games.
Well, we all say Cryptic is foolish to do this. I wonder. Given how many boxes of CO and STO they sold and how much money they prolly made with their Cryptic store plus keeping people months playing with promises of "soon it will be great", I bet from their perspective they made their plus.
When Bill Roper says "it's gonna be great", he means great for his pocket purse.
After the last two MMOs they made, WHY!?!?!. Stay away from mmos cryptic and do what you are good at like......I cant think of anything.
They need to fix what they have, before they screw another one up. This may be the last game they make if they screw it up. The community is tired of the incomplete and broken games they release.
I am not so sure even Cryptic can mess up a Forgotten realms game.
Besides, sooner or later will they need to have a game with enough subs to keep them going in the long run. constantly releasing crap will not work in the long run.
I still hope that they get smart and add enough content without screwing with the rules and world too much. As long as they do that they might actually keep a good sized playerbase.
But I wont preorder a life time sub, that is sure.
It think it is pretty much a given that Cryptic is just in it for the quick cash grab of initial box sales. What ever new game they release is going to be a quick re-skin of the Champions Online engine, something that can bechurned out relatively quickly with tweaks to the art assets, and not a lot of substance beyond that. It is becoming obvious that it is easier for them to launch a new game than it is to invest the time and money into bringing their other titles out of mediocrity and turning them into the AAA titles that their respective IPs deserve.
Umm Loke have you actually played CO and STO? Truth is they play fine just boring as hell so I wouldn't count any single IP as a no brainer where Cryptic is concerned.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Buy your lifetime sub, sight unseen, and recieve 50 free Cryptic points which puts you 1/4 of the way towards owning your own exclusive Bill Roper pet to keep you company as you play alone. (Disclaimer: Pet will appear in a seperate instance.)
I'd sooner buy a VIP boarding pass on the Hindenburg.

I dont think that the proper word is"teases" new cryptic MMO. Teasing implies that people actually want to play a new cryptic MMO.
Dangling a bit of info in front of us and hoping potential customers (that dont already know better) will take the bait is pretty much what cryptic is doing now.
It's pretty obvious what the overall community feels like towards Cryptic as a company. Not a good situation to be in to have the masses against you. Will Cryptic destroy another IP? Probably, they haven't showed the gaming community that they can do anything other than destroy IPs with horribly rushed deveopment cycles.
This seems like a great opportunity for Cryptic to turn things around by putting out a quality title and change the opinions of the community towards this company to a more positive one. If they don't take this opportunity to recover and focus on quality then I don't know how much longer they're going to be around. My guess is not very long.
I know one thing I won't be doing with this MMO is pre-ordering. Definatley wait a few months after release for whatever this is to see how things shape up.

All i can say is this guy has been a curse to MMO's lately. Lets see if he can do it again.

I think its hilarious that this thread consists of 9 pages of Cryptic bashing. They have almost 0 defenders left on this forum...
I have to wonder just who they think is going to buy their next re-skinned POS.

How can their latest MMO-lite shoebox be a D&D game? Isn't that IP still tied up in court?

Instead of teasing (horrifying) us of a New Cryptic MMO maybe he needs to write a book instead....
HOW NOT TO DEVELOPE A BAD MMO
He needs to read it. He could never write it.
