Even an official statement from Turbine management to the effect of "we've had a bit of a shake up, but we will have more information for you soon, please be patient" would largely suffice, yet strangely has somehow been too much for their online community specialists to manage.

The threads they have been locking, deleting and banning people for aren't endless demands to know everything with a fixed time table, most of them have been reasonable requests expressing frustation and confusion due to the total lack of official information.

    Well, let's see:

we have come off of a horrible fiscal year with many people getting laid off and many companies closing their door. Here in the boston area, some companies are still talking about layoffs. So uncertain financials all around.

They were in the midst of being acquired by warner brothers. That just doesn't happen in a week. If a company is being acquired then that can go on for many months as the purchasing company looks over all the financials. So not knowing whether or not they were being bought and exactly what that was going to mean in the long haul and not being able to say or share anything that would hint at any possible ramifications of a purchase seems more than acceptable.

"we've had a shake up?" really? If you are being purchased by a publicly traded company the last thing you are going to say is that there are unforseen financial issues. That doesn't do well for stocks and that's all warner brothers would need is for turbine to say that hey had some bumps in the road and only to have warner look like it was purchasing a company that had problems.

Their forums are not a free for all for anyone to say whatever the want. this isn't the first time a company has deleted forum posts that were negative and won't be the last time. Especially with a possible buyout on the horizion Remember, when  company is thinkng of purchasing another company they do their due dilligence as far as investigating anything about that company.

That's all that would be needed would be for some warner suit to look in on their forums and see negative upon negative posts.

I'll stop wasting my time...defend them all you want, it is still poor customer relations that could have been avoided easily by anyone who was actually concerned about their subscribers.

but again, what mmo company is as open as turbine?

    NC Soft? Sony? Cryptic? Funcom?

And I'm not defending them so much as offering somethign to chew on. I've been hanging around game forums for years now. I never thought I'd be able to play that card but here we are.  And everything you have said has been repeated "verbatim" by other players on other forums for other games. seriously, there is nothing you have said that hasn't been seen and practically copied from other game's forums over the years.

especially the stuff about "deleting unfavorable posts".

Even though I am a player and want to know just as eagerly as anyone else where any game I'm playing is going it is more than clear to me that there are certian business pratices that just "are".

So eric, go play an NC soft game for several years and you tell me how opaque turbine is. I am more than confident that you will come back and realize that your complaints about lack of info pale in extreme comparison.

edit: and to add for sake of clarity, I can go on and on and rant and rant about the thigns I hate about turbine in relation to LOTRO. I mean, have you see what a lvl 65 legendary axe looks like? I could walk into an elementary school and ask some todler to draw one and that is what you would get. I have no issues throwing the darts of condemnation and in fact would seem extreme (read: nutty) if left to rant but I can at least recognize when a company is acting much like any company in a similar situation.

Just wanted to give a hearty AMEN to that statement Sovrath.  So many people think that just because we defend Turbine and LOTRO that we are unaware of the issues the game has, and it's simply not true.

  • ericbelserericbelser Member Posts: 783

Okay, so call it arguing for the sake of arguing rather than defending...hardly a difference.

I could make up lists of excuses for Turbine all day long too, doesn't change the reality that the current situation was an easily avoidable gaff and the whole reason companies like that have online PR departments.

I also don't really care about how bad other MMO companies may be in comparison; I'm not paying any of them and haven't for a good long while for reasons including that. Either way, how "good" or "bad" some other company is doesn't change the fact that this has been a turn for the worse for Turbine. Sure, Turbine at least had a better track record at communicating, but that doesn't mean they couldn't change...which I think they have.

Technically, I still think it is one of the best games out there in terms of game play and such, but that doesn't excuse the present situation.

Well that's the thing, recognizing when a company is acting according to the nature of companies and listing legitimate beefs are two different things. Players might not like how companies act but who does? And if one has worked from the other side of the coin it becomes very apparent why companies act the way they do.

In then end I believe that I have no problem calling a spade a spade. I've seen some of the evidence of completely unprofessiional game masters acting like adolescent kids, the mercenary ways of sony and the cool aloof nature of NC Soft. And as I've said, some of the complaints can be taken verbatim from other forums for other games. Nothing new here.

But to Eric I would say I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing and truly do believe that Turbine is acting like a company that is coming down from a huge financial slump because of the economy as well as increased secrecy and increased moderation because of the buyout.

Have you ever been through a buyout? Have you ever had the president of the company or head of marketing or H.R. come to you and explicitly tell you that if anyone asks you anything about the company or any impending purchase or mergers, that you should just tell them that they should speak to the Public Relations person as you don't have any information to give?

    That's offisite as well.

And your (to Eric) answer would be that it doesn't matter because you are paying Turbine and you expect a certain type of transparency. Well, I can't invalidate that because you are going to feel and think as you do. Nor am I trying to change that for the sake of changing your mind. That does none of us any good.

But I am suggesting that you look at their current lack of transparency for probably what it is and recognize that sometimes the world works in this way, whether we like it or not. So sure, your pissed and disgruntled regardless of you likeing the game (probably same as many of us), I get it. I can see it as being valid because there is a certain expectation that Turbine is usually more forthcoming with info. But as with people, companies have their good periods and bad periods and you have to ride it out or else go a bit nuts.

I mean, you don't see me hounding Benicio del Toro's door or Peter Jackson's and start demanding that I as a future patron need to know more detail about the hobbit movies and who the cast is and etc, etc.

Information will come when it will come.

    Yea I guess thats true.....

but then again del Toro and Jackson are not asking for a monthly subscritpion to watch their older movies while you wait for their new one.  If Turbine is cool with people unsubbing, then by all means, carry on Turbine.

Well, I like the game and have a LTS but I gave up playing it since January.  I basicaly got tired of waiting around for a group to do the high level quests to get the high level gear.  It seems that if you are not a Rune  Keeper, Minstril or Captain your services are not needed for the content to get the ubber gear.  Like I said, I like the game and enjoyed playing it since Beta but with dwindling population of my world and hitting a dead end as far as getting a group I was more frustrated than anything else.

That server queue thing has been discredited as inaccurate in terms of displaying player counts on numerous occasions.

    As the auth says himself:

Shows the last assigned queue number.

    • Note: This number is not the number of players logged on.

    • When you logon, the server assigns you a queue number which indicates your position in the login queue. This queue plays a part when the server is full and you have to wait for some players to logout. So basically all this number shows is the last position in the queue that the server has assigned.

    • I’m not too sure how often the server clears the login queue number so it is kind of a pointless number for us to look at.

You are correct. I probably should have said "as a point of interest". And just let people take those numbers however they'd like.

this is what happens when you force solo 1-30 in an MMO. Everybody feels like a loner and eventually leaves. Those who stay are Tolkien/LoTR hardcore fans.

The fanboys couldnt hide the facts about what was going on with Lotro.

Turbine failed on an epic level with their handling of LoTro. Period.
