What do you appreciate most about AoC

Out of curiosity I wonder what do you like best / appreciate most in AoC?

For me it's pretty much the atmosphere of the game: it feels much more like a mmoRPG for many reasons such as the nice quest texts, enviroments with all their love to detail and it's somewhat 'realistic' and not the typical good vs. bad world with many shades of grey. I'm not actively doing much RP, but I appreciate the intense atmosphere.
Many current MMO's don't seem to put much focus on that and care only about the actual game mechanics.

The combo attack system.  Getting into the middle of a big melee fight with blood splattering everywhere definitely works for me.

Quest Texts are definately a plus for humour:

The classes and environment are also big plus'. The main thing I find it fun to play.

The immersion. Something about the style of the game makes it feel more alive and "real" than other games.

NPCs seem to have more personality, for example. I can relate to their gruff barbaric attitudes, and their...."frank" way of speaking.

The attention to detail makes the world feel lived in and substantial. From the clutter in teh streets, to the town crier in Tortage, it seems that every effort has been made to create a believable world.

And for me, since I played Anarchy Online for years, the zoning doesn't bother me or break the illusion...I'm just used to it.

Hehe, yes, the NPC questgivers can be real assholes sometimes: often there'll be no thanking you on their knees when you did the job or the whole town singing hallelujah for you, sometimes they're even just indifferent and ungrateful for what you've done for them. Which suits nice in the harsher, more merciless world that is Conan's Hyboria.

I think they did a pretty good job with creating the atmosphere, which I find most noticeable in the Cimmeria regions: the whole feel when you're in the snow filled mountains, the haunting music (some of the most beautiful music I've heard ingame), it really manages to capture that Cimmerian feel.

Khitai is my 2nd most favorite region now, the areas are highly immersive and very diverse.

The melee combat, I think it's the most engaging I've encountered in any MMO, teambased combat in GW excluded. It's very easy to lose yourself in the continuous fighting even when I was doing Villas, just because of the positioning, starting up the right combos for maximum effect and the visceral feel of the fatalities. No simple buttonmashing in AoC, at least as a melee combattant.

The log out button.   I gave AOC a shot last month for first time since launch and even though it now runs great and come on along way in bug fixes, I still found I was too busy playing the Ui and not my character, I don't find the combo system that engaging.

It's a likable game.  I go back for an odd month sometimes but just end up quitting again in frustration.

The main problems are:  The class balance is absolutely awful, the game is still full of bugs (some left over from beta, as well as new ones), the loading times in the new zones are rediculus, the graphics engine is poorly optimized and not very stable (crashes a lot on 32bit OSs), 90% of the "new content" in the expansion is a few repeatable quests which arn't even that interesting.  The zones are also very small when compared to other MMOs (with wow, warhammer, and LOTRO having mostly seamless terrain, makes AOC feel dated).

TBH it was a bit silly of them to bring out an expansion when the origional game needs to much work, if it doesn't do well I think it could finish AoC off.  It's already come close to being closed down in the past.

The best thing for me so far (As a new player) is like its a step into the unknown. Not had that for a long time.

I'm constantly walking into an area and getting owned by someones random golems, or finding a giant alligator whipping my ass cos i've just ran too far up the map.

    So far so good.

Odd. I thought the thread title was "what do you appreciate most about AoC" , not "Let's whine about AoC". image

    Easy to get confused ;)

I love my guild and the community I interact with, the graphics are awesome, and the many hidden pearls in the quest dialogues. Last but not least, easy to play, hard to master.

I really enjoy the music, graphics, humor, and combat system in AoC. The music is what got me to try AoC, but it is the combat system that keeps me coming back. The expansion has been quite fun so far as well.

    The writing.
    The immersion.
    Dismemberment.

The setting. The graphics. The combat. The lore. Questing. Being able to hit any mob my blade brushes against.

Tortage, imo, is mmo perfection, even if I have played through it quite a few times. The pvp is hands down the BEST. People complain that it should be a seamless world. Like what? WoW? The most instanced game in the universe come end-game besides maybe guild wars or DDO? Lets sit in a main city and rely on random dungeon Q  and summoning stones to take us where we need to go. Give me a break.

Godlsayer is the only expansion that an mmo has done right. Every other mmo makes old content worthless when they increase a lvl cap. Funcom got this right. And increased the customization of all of their classes so we arent all walking around being warrior# 823487. THE KING HAS RETURNED

Yeah i agree. Sticking with the 80 cap was a great move buy Funcom. Many games make the mistake of upping the level cap and leaving themselves with barely any endgame whilst all the old stuff lies in waste.

Agreed. This was a brilliant move, and I hope other game devs learn something from this.

I'm just installing the game now, thought I'd finally give this game a go as it's pretty much the only big title MMO that I havn't tried yet.

You guys got me all excited with all of the positivity ;) It would be nice to see an MMO that did poorly at launch turn it's crap around.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've heard people talk of this server before. Is this the highest populated server?

Also are there any decently populated PVP servers (non RP)? I plan on trying both a PVP and PVE server.

In addition, I'm wondering if I would be able to run the game in DX10 at mediumish settings, or if I should just stick with DX9? My system isn't high end.

    GeForce 9500GT 1GB

Stick with DX9. DX10 looks great but eats a lot of systems. Mine is beefier than yours and with medium DX10 I was getting 20fps and high dx9 I get 75. My processor is what kills me though but its still a quad core.

DX9 it is then, thanks for the heads up.

Even if AoC had launched in the state that it is in now, it's not a game for everyone and the numbers would have dwindled regardless. Some people just need their hand held. And i'm the person curtting those hands off. HAIL TO THE KING

I don't doubt that, but it's funny to see, so its what I liked most.

My girlfriend said Uninstalling the game was the best part of it.

See, if you read the TOS, it makes it pretty clear that you can't just say "AoC sucks"...you have to give a reason as to WHY you think it sucks.

For example.....let's just say that I (theoretically) think Final Fantasy XIV "sucks".....I can't just say "Final Fantsy XIV sucks!!" I have to say something like:

"It is my opinion that Final Fantasy XIV sucks because it's obviously designed to appeal to adolescent emo kids with fantasies of being a asian super-villain (who happens to look like a transgendered vampire), has a deathly slow make-me-want-to-fall-asleep combat system, cutsie little pokemon looking graphics, and I've generally always felt that Final Fantasy games were boring garbage in general."

    See how that works??

Now you are offending transgendered vampires... i'm filing a complaint.

As someone that constantly $%#$ about the damn UI, thanks for giving me the opportunity to change my glasses :)

    Graphics:

    • The environments are a pure beauty. Ruins feels like... ruins, be it huge or small. You can feel time passed over them. I really love white sands!

    • Animations are excellent: form running to emotes through fatalities *grins*.

    • Most of the textures are nice, especially the leather ones. There's also some serious work on the environmental textures in Kithai.

    • Most colors choice are great.

    • Weapons looks deadly, not too big as in WoW, not too small as in LotRo.

    Combat:

    • The need to be obliged to move in combat to survive brings another dimension and great pleasure.

    • Character collision makes tanks and good team work really nice, as you can block the way to your healer.

    • The joy of fatalities...

    • Not your mommy MMO:  you're going to get pawned often both by players and mobs alike

    Classes:

    • If nothing else 12 classes(sic!)  each with a different and interesting game play

    • You never know how your group composition will end and it always means slight adjustment to your game play

    Quests:

    • Some really interesting texts out there.

    • It's nice to be able to do bad things to complete quests

    Character customization:

    • Great body customization

    • You can make a babe but also the most ugly character

UI (changed my glasses ;) ):

    • Clean and sleek UI

    • Great art nicely wrapping it without putting too emphasis on it over the world graphics.

    (edit) Sound:

    • The music is awesome and fit the game perfectly, even better than LotRo!

    • Playing with a good headset lets you hear many sounds details that makes the world feel alive.

Anyone running this game through Vista 32?

I had a hell of a time getting the patcher to work, fortunately I found an old forum thread that gave me a solution. My problem now is that after quitting the game and attempting to restart I literally cannot find the launcher. I've had similar problems with Vista before, but I have always found a way around it. I can see AOC in Programs and Features (for uninstalling programs) in the Control Panel, but I can't find any sort of launcher or file that can get the game going. Closest I can get is to setup the whole game again after uninstalling.

I did find a forum thread with someone who had this issue, but the only 2 replies were from people who had the same problem. Where is that damn launcher, lol? This is such a silly thing to hold me back, any help would be appreciated.
