I agree.  Completely useless "game".  I won't rehash things that have been posted tenthousand times already but don't waste your time and money on something ultimately unrewarding.

The title of this thread is "how long does it take to get into eve"  not  "Can all the haters please convince me not to play the game"

funny thing about EVE.  it has the fanatical "never gonna unsubb ever" people and the "EVE should die in a fire" people...like all games of course, it just seems eve has more concentration than most games.

anyways...back on topic with a vague answer:

EVE is hard, how long it takes to get "into it" is subjective to how much you like it.

You again. How much time do you spend on attempting to stop people even trying games?

To get a decent ship? Few weeks probably. But it does take a very long time to get your skills up to truly enjoy the game.

Personally, I pay the subscription for Eve and all I do is train skills whilst playing other MMO's. I kind of hate the idea of having newb skills. So I just patiently train 24/7. Don't play much anymore though. Not yet.

I'm not gonna get in to a big long threadnaught with you or anything - it's your time and your money. All I can say is that I suspect you're cheating yourself, because while your character is training skills, you aren't.

I have seen over and over and over, the results of this "I will wait until I have the 10/20/50/100 million SP that I think I need to "compete" in PVP before I start" and it always turns out badly. All that happens is that you'll do your learning in 200mill HACs rather than 2.5mill frigates. Then we have to read your bitterpost complaining that EVE is a grindfest because you have spend 9475649 hours missioning to pay for each 5 seconds you PvP.

Or maybe not, Maybe you're that one guy that's different, I dunno. Anyway, best of luck.

Lol. Perhaps I shouldn't have been so vague. My bad. I have been training skills so I can feel less like a newb later on, but the real reason I am not playing at the moment is because I am maxing learning skills. All of them, to lv5. Then doing a remap and maxing perception/willpower to train my gunnery skills. And somewhat because I always join boring and/or useless corps that never really do the things I aim for. Such as, Lv4 missions right now. So because of that, I also wish to get my skills up in order to Solo them myself with my BS.

I agree with you though, at least partially. I am not personally training skills as a player. But I do possess the basic knowledge in order to slowly advance myself when I get back to playing a lot again.

Well jeez at least go join Red vs Blue or something. You're paying for the game, why not play it?

    Red Vs Blue... ? lol.

According to Adam Tingle, roughly five weeks.

If you haven't read his Eve Survivor Guy series, I highly recommend it. it think it'll answer the questions you have about getting into the game.

Until I'm ready for major Pvp. I'd like to do some missions, exploration/wormholes. Pvp isn't entirely out of the question though. If the corp does what i'm looking for along with pvp, that's also fine.

With all due respect. This is not how you get ready for major PVP. You will get owned and lose billions. You will have skill points and no skill. You have to learn to fly T1 well before you're good at T2. Seriously, I've seen this so many times. Major PVP is an attitude almost as much as it is a skill.

You can get into EVE on your first day, but I suspect most players don't feel really comfortable until 3-6 months in.

There's just so much to learn and be exposed to and that overwhelming feeling sticks with you....about forever since they keep adding to the game.

Sorry if that's been said in previous posts, I didn't check them out.

By the way, OP, have you read the "Survivor guy" 8 weeks mini blog ?

    http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/14/view/news

The 1st week report must lie on page 2

    Enjoy reading ^^

    Edit :

I forgot to mention that you can try the game for 14 days, this might give you a rough idea.

Don't hesitate to ask questions in the help chanel and DO follow the tutorial

Haha. Perhaps. You got an in-game name I can add? You seem like a nice enough fellow.

It seems to take some people years and many many free trials to "get into eve"  but for some people they get into it straight away.

The same is true for "getting good" at eve,  its like getting good at gambling really, some people always seem to win but they never reveal all that they lost

    it took me 3 trials,

    1st (2004) i lasted 3 months before quiting

    2nd (2006) i didnt sub at all

3rd (2008) and i have not stopped playing it.

and now i am up to the point where i can't stand MMO games where if you die you just respawn with everything you had and no penalty whatsoever.

On Eve you actually never stop learning. There are so many game mechanics you can try, get into, and ultimately master, that you can never say you know them all. And even if you do, chances are some aspects evolved (i.e. probing, supercapital combat, mission arcs), or a new one emerged (i.e. wormholes, planetary interaction) so you never run out of things to explore and learn :)

I tried getting in to it a few times over the years (I think the longest stint was about 2-3 months), but I just found it to slow.  Also when you have to compete with people who have been playing for years you will never catch up so your just wasting time.  You can't even explore that much either because someone is almost certainly going to kill you at a gate before you have chance to react, because they have nothing else to do (kinda says something about the "end-game" :P)

I wish I'd bothered with it right from the start then I may have stuck with it, but meh.  Eve caters for people who have been with it for a long time, not to new players.

Nice. You fit almost all of the common myths about EVE in to just two paragraphs.

It took me 3-4 weeks to get the basics of the game. Everything after that was pure fun.

If he could have squeezed in the thing about all of the devs cheating in game all of the time, and CCP being ISK-sellers, then he'd have, I dunno, got bingo or something. Maybe a prize.

I just couldn't get into it after multiple tries.  It's just not immersive enough for me.  It looks pretty enough but it's hard to get into combat, just watching little boxes flying around.  Plus there is something to be said on how the void of space, because it's so big, just feels empty and lonely most of the time.

In some ways I wish Eve was more of an MMO version of the X series.

This and about 150 other things that are written everywhere all over the net.  Also the super mega rabid fanbois are wicked annoying, they spend 3/4 of their time finding ways to justify eve's shortcomings and convincing new people to throw money at it.
