Something I can't say about 99% of all other MMOs that I've played.
So I hope to see it thrive and grow and flourish.
Its. Entertaining. Period.
I agree.
It took me about an hour to truly understand my role in this world. I was leaning heavily to the side that says this was a $50 lesson learned while going through the tutorial...I learned how to press "F." After the tutorial, I entered one of the Action Districts and piddled around for a bit, pushing "F" when advised to. I then encountered one or two of those botters/hackers. Exit Game.
A few hours later, after doing some mining in Eve, I decided to check out the Social District to see what all the talk was about. Ahh, here's some neato stuff I can unlock if I stick with it. I went back to an Action District to see if it was worth it. Ran around for a little while just to see what was going down in the city. Suddenly, I get a request for backup. Sure, what the heck. I start running towards the perp, when a car pulls up next to me and starts to slowly follow me. I finally look at the tag over the car and see a green name. Oh, it's the person who requested backup. I hopped in and rode shotgun. We chased down the perp(s) while ramming and shooting and chasing on foot and switching cars and killing and dying. Intense is not a word I use often, but I would definitely use it here.
When the mission ended, I had that "Aha!" moment and realized that if I'm willing to participate in the game the rewards are vast. I now have roughly an hour of Action play left, and have encountered only a handful of botters/hackers (at least those who are obvious about it) and countless allies and foes who contribute to the enjoyment of this game.
I should probably also add that I've never been much of a PvP'er and my enjoyment of GTA begins and ends at the humor found in the game.
Currently Playing: Nothing...I'm developing. Looking Forward To:
Where is the ability to roleplay a drug dealer, rapist, serial killer, crime boss or even a crooked cop for that matter? What a shame
Are you kidding me? You complain because it's not a massive-multiplayer-rape game? You'd seriously thought that EA would create something like that? Woah.... That is messed up.
EA said it's a game about crimes. And yes: it is a game about crimes. You can steal and sell cards, destroy stuff, break windows of shops and steal and sell the loot, kill people and so on. Those are crimes. They are a large part of the game. So saying it's a game about crimes is true.
EA never said "you can rape people and become a crime boss!". You made that up, and then complain it's not there. You can say of course "I would have liked following features....", but that is something completly different, than trying to make it sound as if EA promised those features.
EA created a game that has to do with crimes. Either you like it or you don't.
Rape may be a controversial topic but it is part of Crime.
So is murdering/raping children, you want them to make a game about child rape/murder too?
Just because its about CRIME doesnt make it about EVERY crime, get over it or get out.
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling" Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
I see nothing resembling action in this game at all. There's no fast paced excitement. I feel as though I should be taking an FPS approach to combat... but the controls and movement are sluggish. There's nothing visceral about this experience. I don't feel any immersion, and spend more time fighting with the controls than I do with enemies.
GTA works okay on a console, but really not in MMO form without a serious control overhaul.
Important facts: 1. Free to Play games are poorly made. 2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals. 3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE. 4. Community is more important than you think.
But the game is not as bad as you're making it out to be, and I think the disappointment you feel is more your fault then it is Realtime Worlds. In all this time waiting for APB to be released, I never got the impression that the game was in depth as you described it. I always knew it would be cops and robbers, GTA gameplay with a limited amount of people. It is the way they marketed it since EA started pushing the game.
People go into these MMO's with wild expectations, and I mean wild. Playing a drug dealer, rapist, serial killer? Really? Seriously dude, tone it down and get real.
Also seek some professional help.
Took the words right out of my mouth and formed it into a post here in this thread.

you couldnt find action in this game ..... did you leave the social district are we playing the same game
as for sluggish controls go buy a real pc this game runs flawless for me ive never seen any game in beta run this good
seriously folks dont let the trolls here scare you off this is one of the best games ive played in a long long time
I played during the beta, The game was fairly decent overall, Good graphics, Good game-play, but its lacking content, and any kind of rewarding feeling for progressing. They also have failed to make any kind of balance between the weapons. Not to mention the cars handle horribly. If they balance out the weapons, add some new districts, it might actually be worth a buy.
There will be more districts. The Midtown district is in development. Think there is a file for it somewhere. Think they said there will be smaller updates (more clothes/weapons etc) and larger, but less frequent updates (more game modes, maps etc). At least that seems to be the plan anyway.
I have to disagree, this is FAR from the "best game ever" lol.
It's trendy and marketed to a young and/or immature demographic.
The game is a brilliant timesink designed to achieve maximum revenue for the company with minimal original content.
The "social district" reminds me of when critics made fun of GTA for the ability to change outfits and character looks. This is one step away from paper dolls and barbie playing dress up.
Then you have ingame marketing for third party websites, drumming up revenue from gamers that want to embrace a certain "image." I dare say that image is pure fantasy for 99.9% of ABP customers, just another trendy image for budding wannabe hipsters to attempt to grasp to.
Took hours to download this game, took less than an hour of play to realize what a heap of cattle fodder this IP is.
Uninstalled...
''Brilliant timesink''? What MMO isn't a well (or poorly) designed timesink?
And what trendy image is this game advertising? It's a damn game, not a clothes store. It's quite reductionist to claim that this game is meant only for ''a young and/or immature demographic''. So you're basically saying that this game is one for immature people? That anyone who likes this game is somehow more immature than someone who plays EVE or any so called 'deep' MMO? We're talking about video games here. As long as it's fun, it's achieved it's goal. You want depth, go play Mass Effect 2. MMOs aren't exactly famed for their depth.
I am just a troll, there is no need to feed the trolls. (FIXED)
The truth is some people will enjoy the game and some will not. Just like some people like Theme part MMO games and some like Sandbox style MMO games.
If someone doesn't enjoy the game, well I am sorry to hear that but thinks for atleast giving the game a shot. Now if only they would just move on without throwing a hissy fit like most people that hate something do.
I like how he says the game is targeted to the Young and Immature demographic. When thats about the exact opposite of what the game is drawing in. Most of the people I have met ingame so far have been older people 20-50 range and most of them have acted more mature then what is seen in other more popular MMO's.
I engaged in a discussion... on a discussion forum...
The game IS targeted at a young and immature demographic, lets see....
1. Awful trendy music tracks.
2. Tattoos and gun's promoting "gangsta lifestyle." Wigger much folks?
3. In game adverts for sites such as Suicide Girls? Come on...
As far as the time sink comment, yes all games and MMO's are such. I was relating to the social area, reminded me of Sony's Home. The symbol generator and beat machines are both programs I have access to on my desktop for free, no need to buy APB to create stuff.
If its really drawing a "20-50" age bracket, it says loads about the current state of the mentality of users drawn to this game. And I would not consider anything 20-25 "older", just not as young, certainly not a catalyst of maturity by any means.
Again... I am sorry you feel the need to "drama up" things, but a well typed out response to a discussion is nothing like a hissy fit...
I don't like the game, I am entitled to my opinion as you are...
Might be useful to actually understand what forum trolling really is...

Sorry to continue the 'drama' but I yet again take offense.
1. Awful trendy music tracks? So you're blaming this game for having a modern and popular soundtrack?
2. Tattoos and guns promoting the gangsta lifestyle? Did you ever think this game was meant to do anything else? It's game where you get to play a gangster or a vigilante, it was never going to exactly be against the gangster lifestyle was it? And are you suggesting that all people who are going to play this game are wiggers? I think most people playing this game are the opposite.
3. Yes I admit the SG adverts are tacky, but in this case it's an easy source of revenue. How about the awful adverts plastered all over this website? Over every website?
4. The symbol generator, while not revoloutionary in it's function, is unique as it is ingame. The point you're making is irrevelant, just saying you have a similar program on your computer doesn't make the ingame feature any less interesting in regards to the game.
While you are entitled to your opinion as much as anyone else is, your opinion seems to be based on gross sweeping statements that insult the vast majority of players of the game. You seem to assume that anyone who plays this game must either be immature/indie/wigger/gangsta. Which is simply not true.
1. Awful trendy music tracks? So you're blaming this game for having a modern and popular soundtrack?
* Yes , modern, popular, liked by "certain" personalitys. IMO the music is still awful, you may just as well consider what I think is good music awful as well.
*Exactly my point, "Tattoos and guns promoting the gangsta lifestyle? Did you ever think this game was meant to do anything else?"
I only suggested that impressionable minds of certain mind sets will find this virtual atmosphere appealing.
3. Yes I admit the SG adverts are tacky, but in this case it's an easy source of revenue. How about the awful adverts plastered all over this website? Over every website?
*It's not a website.. it's a game, one you pay upfront for and then sink more money into to continue fully playing.
IMO if they are getting advertising revenue from INGAME adverts the game should be F2P. My guess is that this is actually implemented as a back-up just incase they need to make such a transition.
4. The symbol generator, while not revoloutionary in it's function, is unique as it is ingame. The point you're making is irrevelant, just saying you have a similar program on your computer doesn't make the ingame feature any less interesting in regards to the game.
*Again these are established features in a game that has to be paid for. I made the comments in relation to paying for a game that is actually innovative and new, not rehashed and bundled together.

Okay, so pretty much what your saying is this is a game with a soundtrack and setting that you personally find unappealing? That's fine, it's a subjective manner.
However, in game ads, considering how much new MMOs cost to make, and the fact that Realtime Worlds are trying to run a profitable business are reasonable, even if not entirely wanted. Plus they are relatively subtle, unnoticeable in the grand scheme of things. Sure you might notice one as you walk past, but it doesn't derive from the player experience.
And the symbol generator etc. are innovative...in an MMO. Find another MMO with similar or as advanced customisation features and I will concede this point, but as far as I can tell it is a new feature in MMOs. Nothing wrong with taking a good idea and using it in a new format.
MMORPG.COM should really refrain from enlisting games on their site, that are not MMORPGs.
This is not an MMORPG! It's just an absolutely overpriced MOFPS.
it is still an mmo. is it an online persistant world? yes.
Then so is a Neverwinter Nights multiplayer module, and so is Diablo. Both have persitent worlds. Yet, neither are mmos. I think you might want to up you requirements for what makes an mmo. 100 people tops in instanced maps branching off a single hub is NOT an mmo. Then again, APB is also not an RPG. So maybe it's best mmoRPG.com just change their name to "everycheapassonlinegameunderthesun.com" and be done with it.
-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.- -And on the 8th day, man created God.-
What exactly is preventing people from role-playing? If you want to give your character more life, by all means, do it. If the only thing holding you back is the game's mechanics then you just aren't trying hard enough.
For instance, devote some webspace to your character. Involve some other like-minded players into your story. An example would be the dirty cop who suspects another Enforcer is on to him. Evidence of the cop's dirty dealings are publicized (via webspace that you have promoted for other role-players to view), cover ups occur, and so on.
Not all role-playing needs to take place in the game, especially since we're not all in the same World. But, ya know what, if I saw a number of role-players and storylines coming from only a couple of Worlds I'd for sure be wanting to join that World, or to create an environment like it in another World.

It is my opinion that this game suffers from the "Wouldn't it be great..." curse. And what I mean by that is some team of guys were sitting around a table and said "Gee. Wouldn't it be great if you could play Grand Theft Auto Online, but with millions of players?" Sounds great on paper, right? But part of what makes Grand Theft Auto great, is the story. Your character has a purpose. In MMORPGs, players are required to "Dream up" A purpose for their character, and games designed like this, offer very little in the way of that.
One of these days Bethesda will release an Oblivion style MMORPG and we'll see the same type of thing. It'll basically be Mortal online/Darkfall with Elder Scrolls plastered on it.

diablo was a really bad example for that ... seeing how only eight can hold in one mapped area... max... at the least games like APB have people, tons of people in their combat districts let a lone your social districts. Also How the servers can hold people, 30k+ on one server, you are severely wrong about it not being an MMO. It even says how much the server is holding. The RPG element is understandable, but that is really about it.
Besides from the RPG element, your argument is not holding for me, at all.
also when I say "RPG" element I am refering to the DnD system style of gameplay.

Yes, but Bethseda has more devout and loyalist's to its community already. More so than other games for sure. I can assure you if an oblivion form of MMO is to release, mark my words, it will be huge. They have the largest moding community in the world. Just the heads up.
i tried apb. sorry but he glitchs and minor lag and lack of fun can stay thieir. No Sale here. I'll gladly stick to gta 4 n play it online with a smile :-)

All games have a form of instancing in it? It is a must to prevent insane amounts of lag. What's the point?
