The ships will probably be hubs and player housing just like Bioware said, and have more features than the ship in Mass Effect 2. I doubt there will be space combat.
I think at some point there will be space combat. Just not at launch.
My thoughts too. Or at most very limited space combat and exploration at launch.
But we'll await the further announcements.
Space combat would be a huge feature to put in an xpac so I imagine they will hold out on introducing space combat till then.
I have a semi for that female Jedi, though she could use some funbags.
Awesome trailer and the PVP and "player housing" part should start in some small way to disprove the idiotic thoughts that the Star wars mmo would be a single player game with chat.
War zones, it would seem, are contested areas that pitt the Empire and the Repulic against one another in ground based PvP battle. The impression that I was left with after hearing what they had to say and the way that it was presented was that the War Zones would function in a style similar to Battlegrounds or Warhammer Online's scenarios. HOwever, as was the case with startship, this has not yet been confirmed.
oh dear lord please please please please please dont let the war zones be like bg's and sc's!!!!!!! PLEASE DONT BE THAT STUPID!

Well with the decision to go to pvp warzone (battlegrounds) I think we can safely assume that the game is a PvE game through and through. Remember folks, open PvP does not sell boxes (or subs for that matter). They are trying to compete with WoW you know.

What puzzles me is that SWG had consensual openworld PVP and no battlegrounds and people loved that. As far as I could tell it worked fine and had little issues concerning the actual "consenual" mechanics side of it.
And yet, many companies seem fearful to implement it. Even though I predominantly PVE, I can appreciated that the fact that such battles took place around me, they served to help immerse me in the game. They added a dynamic element to the whole recipe of immersion.
So why do companies feel the need to segregate PVP away from the rest of their game? I mean, I like participating in Battlegrounds from time to time. But does the entire PVP element have to be segregated in that way? Even Blizzard are looking to intergrate it better.
I only hope that these "warzones" are not actually segregated from the rest of the gameworld but are just designated areas where a player CAN be pvp enabled, because if they are nothing more than boxed off battlegrounds then that would be a shame.
Oh how I miss my huge open worlds, risk vs reward, slow pacing, grouping, community interactions being vital... Everytime I read about TOR something dies inside me.. instanced this, instanced that, solo this, solo that.
Whatever happened to MMORPGs being virtual, community-driven immersive worlds? Not that they care, they're getting a ton of cash right out the gate and that's all that matters nowadays.
I bet you cant visit other player's ship...noone thought about that did you...all o you is so hyped just couse its SW that you dont actually think..Im sick of it
and BW learn from GW2
BW learning from GW2 not really sure about that since other than a couple small gameplay clips they have been all talk as well. I played GW1 and it was an average game but GW2 sounds great but so did GW1. Just like until I have more concrete info and more vids on TOR I take a neutral standing. WAR had alot of neat ideas but they were poorly implemented the same thing can happen with GW2 or TOR.
If Pigozz actually, I dunno, read the release... he would see the dev talked about customising it and being able to invite other players in.
Seems to me small minded people on here are determined to hate on things so much that they ignore factual evidence and just stamp their own opinion in its place.
I REJECT YOUR REALITY AND SUBSTITUTE MY OWN!
For the record I hope ToR does well, I hope GW 2 does well, I hope cata does well, FFXIV does well and any other MMO that anyone anywhere finds fun in does well. The more good MMOS the better for us as customers.

What game do you know has this and has been successfull? And when I say successfull, I mean an equal number of players participating in both PvE and PvP at the same time.
It's not just about just putting it in the game. If you put in substantial PvP (where you give players a viable option to pvp instead of pve) you then have to balance the game around both and no game (including WoW) has done this with any success. Usually when both are put in one gets bastardized in favor of the other.

I think that not enough people enjoy it though to warrant serious development time to make it a vital part of your game, especially when you're initial focus going in is PvE (EQ is a prime example of this, how many open pvp servers were there?)

Providing incentives to participate in various playstyles has been the bane of many mmo's but that doesn't mean that they never got it to work.
Like all other playstyles, PVP needs incentives and goals in order to entice people to take part in it, and this is were many MMO's go wrong. Whilst some games don't provide enough incentives and goals to participate in PVP on PVP/PVE servers, others force PVP onto the player whether they want it or not (PVP servers). But it doesn't have to be that way....SWG proved that consensual PVP on PVE servers does in fact work IF there are enough incentives and goals to it.
Now, the main difference between openworld consensual PVP and battlegrounds is that battlegrounds are locked away from the rest of the gameworld. Making them feel disconnected. The similarities that the two have are that both require incentives and goals.
Therefore, if pvp was given enough incentives and goals and allowed to be consensual, it can be successfully fully integrated into the openworld without imposing itself on those who would rather not participate in it. SWG did this and it was one of the elements that actually worked rather well. Its just a shame that other parts of the game dragged it all down.
Therefore, there should be no reason why pvp should be segregated away in SWTOR. Even Blizzard are looking into ways of intergrating pvp more into the gameworld.
What game do you know has this and has been successfull? And when I say successfull, I mean an equal number of players participating in both PvE and PvP at the same time.
Just because noone has yet to succesfully implement both to a satisfying level in one game doesn't mean it's a faulty concept.

I never said it was a faulty concept, but I think the fact that hasn't been done up to this point highlight what kind of a challenge it is for developers to put that in and then going foward have to constantly balance game mechanics/gear/etc around both styles instead of just one.
Also, how to do implement consensual pvp in the open world without it resorting to gank squad pvp? Even if you implement penalties, if they are not severe enough it'll happen anyway.
Yup sounds like another terrible WOW copycat with a star wars theme,
hey bioshock, when you die in a year, you should go back to making single player games, because the last thing we need is another blizzard making those shitty kiddy games, that take no thought whatsoever to do anything in. DUR DUR
Love how these pre scripted speeches carefully tipped toe around that fact they wont show actual gameplay.. crysis 2 in game footage from earlier in the day put those cinematic trailers to shame.
WoW 2.0 Star Wars:TOR - cant wait to see the shitty in game engine.

"Ships" are going to be exactly like the Ebon Hawk.
They're going to be exactly like the Normandy.
They're going to be exactly like Dragon Age's campsite.
Bioware makes the same game, over and over. Don't you realize that?
I loved KOTOR. Give me the Ebon hawk in TOR, that will be just fine!
I do hope the PvP is Realm Versus Realm. That would be awesome!
Instanced battlegrounds suck, and "consensual" PvP is just retarded.
Realm V Realm makes the most sense, since it's a contested area for PvP, while when you are safely away from the front, you don't have to engage in PvP.
This sounds like what Star Trek had originally intended. Something like it anyway. Where you get your own ship, your own crew, and items to design it. You can actually walk around inside your own ship. Oh I want my own ship. I want to be able to choose the colors and general layout of the ship, and the locations for different things like where the food dispensers are.
Oh I want my own ship, not just a dinky little icon.
I can't wait for this game. The Jedi and the ability to have my own ship that I can walk around in make it enticing. Of course, implementation matters, but oh man.
Ebon Hawk, you think? I loved the Ebon Hawk, even if I wished I could do more with it than just fly places and run around.
I hope to hell they aren't going to turn this into Realm vs Realm. And consensual PvP is the ONLY way to go.
Consensual PvP is not the only way to go.
Why do people want to play in games that deal with war, conflict, having players from opposing factions, and the rest... then want to cry about consensual PvP?
You know what, they need to add consensual PvE... cause you know, maybe - sometimes those mobs may just not feel like having to let you kill them repeatedly.
If there were a game where everybody was on the same side, then one might have the case for consensual PvP - having some sort of lore thing that some greater power actually prevents people from fighting each other - but having arena areas where people are allowed to duel/fight/etc.
Otherwise, it is a pretty retarded thing to say.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Not everybody enjoys non-consentual pvp, and looking at sub numbers, I'd go so far as to say that most players don't enjoy non-consentual PVP.
All open world pvp does is generate an environment of gankers. Instanced PVP is far more enjoyable for a larger percentage of the player base, and developers ability to balance the encounters vs. what they can do with open world pvp make for more realistic encounters. I'm sorry, but there is nothing realistic about somebody at lvl cap killing somebody repeatedly, or somebody at lvl cap 1 hitting somebody with no chance to defend because of level differences.
The only people who complain about instanced PVP are the gankers, because the moment you put them in a balanced PVP environment, their lack of skills shines through.
