Every video I've seen implies that the game isn't going to be open world,
I mean .. it will be open world it's just the world is going to be really small with heavy instancing for story and "voice acting", it will be more of an RPG with mmorpg features, not a real world of star wars.

90% of the world is open, I wonder how many more times we're going to have to say that.

Man, this is the whole point.
We've all heard what the developers and producers have said about the game being an 'open world'.
And then we see like, what?, forty minutes of gameplay footage and it's quite evidently not open at all - it's pathways, platforms and opened up areas for mission resolution.
And, with the best will in the world, Daniel Erickson - a writer - doesn't seem to understand what the words 'huge' and 'open' and 'explore' actually mean.

But you should realize that this game will not be a sandbox game. those who want to play this game don't want a sandbox. Will there be pathways, instances? Of course there will be designated areas that serve to unfold the story but that doesn't mean that everything will be like that. I don't see why there shouldn't be open areas too.

I'm perplexed as to what gave you these conclusions with regards world size.
If I showed you a character stood in Mos Eisley in SWG, with buildings and cliffs all around which obscures the view of the open landscape, would you think that the world size was small and greatly instanced? You might do, and you'd be wrong. And the best way to prove that would be to show someone on a speeder travelling from one end of the planets gameworld to the other, or show you a map.
The point I'm trying to make is that perhaps your perception of what you're seeing is misleading. A picture of a character stood in Mos Eisley, is just that, a picture of a character stood in Mos Eisley. It doesn't accurately reflect anything else.
Likewise, the videos we saw were designed to showcase combat, dialogue and other elements both indoors and outdoors. There were not designed to show you the full extent of the landscape and therefore you cannot accurately access that based on these videos.

I presume you are referring to the 20 minute walkthrough last year? That was in an instance, onboard a spaceship, so yeah, no open world there.
For the rest you have to realise this is not a game world like SWG's, it is filled with things: trees mountains, cliffs, buildings and stuff like that.
And yes, we've seen huge environments, like in the Korriban video. You will have to link to where Daniel Erickson errs and like you say, he is a writer, not an environment artist.

No, I am referring to the 2 x 10 minute Sith and BH gameplay sequences and the 20 minute Korriban sequence shown on GT4 with Dallas Dickinson - both released yesterday.
You can clearly see that Korriban, one of their smallest worlds is quite open (No, cliffs don't make it less open, it's a valley) and quite huge.
If you notice the platform on the cliffs, that is in use as it is that platform where the Sith personal ship is parked in a screenshot.
Quite huge? Put another 5 players in that area and you ll be waiting in line to kill those mobs. Excuse me but even the poorest excuse for a MMO ever (Mortal Online) has larger open world areas than this.

Yeah but mo sucks. Even I can make a big large area and throw some mobs in it. Will that be a great game? Plus how did you manage to figure out it was a small place?

What? The Korriban video - 'very very far' - is completely bounded by cliff-faces. You can't travel for twenty seconds in any direction except in the directions that Bioware want you to go. Seriously, have another look at it. That whole area is smaller than the courtyard outside Theed spaceport in SWG.

Oh so you want a desert or something to give you the feeling of large and open? That's the style of the planet and that's supposed to be like grand canyon.

By watching the footage? Look at it... check the walkable distance as he turns from side to side at the beginning... then picture how crowded the place would look with another 5 players running the same quest... or just being in the area pveing.
It is also fairly evident that travel options are... forward and backwards.
So this footage isn't the most appropriate to prove open worldness as Fdzaiigl attempted.

@Storyless: you DO realise that deserts aren't just flat don't you? That there are canyons, cliffs, valleys and gorges in desert terrain too? What I'm trying to say is that the term "desert" is used to describe the climate of a region and its effects on the environment. It isn't used as an accurate reflection for the actual profile of the terrain:
"A desert is a landscape or region that receives little precipitation. Deserts are defined as areas with an average annual precipitation of less than per year, or as areas where more water is lost by evapotranspiration than falls as precipitation."
To me Korriban fits that description whilst still having canyons.
If Bioware decided to drop all mmo features from TOR today and make it a single player game w/ Co-op features it would still sell in the millions.
How many mmo devs games could stand up if they did the same?
Wow would be rated a 4/10 and be bashed to all hell for being a worthless rpg and so would every other mmo.
What game out or coming out does what Tor does with storyline? Interactions with NPCs and gives a player choice?
All you have to do is watch the videos, people are going to buy TOR for tha actual gameplay and story something none of us have ever done when it comes to mmos.
Before TOR themepark mmos were nothing but uninspired tasks done over and over until new tasks were created.
This game will revolutionize the genre, too bad its going to do it in a way thats truly alien to most current mmo players.

Well, look, I'm not trying to bait you or anything but, in the image you yourself selected, if the character turned left or right, they could go for ten or fifteen seconds before they hit a wall.
It seems to be the same with the BH/Imp agent outside scene - on either side they're bounded by wooded mounds.
I think the game will at least be worth the first 30 days to see how it plays. Pretty simple choice really if the world is openish like WoW then I can stay if it is closer to guildwars then I leave.

And why not?
Confining players to small areas is a much better way to tell a story.
With small areas they will have cinematics and nice set pieces.
Think outside the box, forget what you've experienced with every other mmo.
Bioware is going to deliver a perfect mix of solo/small team Storyline Rpg with MMO elements.
This game doesn't need a sprawling open world.
