I find it funny that were debating between two horrible games.
Its like looking at two pieces of dog shit and trying to choose the one that smells less like shit.
Both games completely miss the mark, whats the mark? A 3D UO...
Say that to all those people enjoying MO at the MO forum and you will see. You might not like MO, but lots of others do and that number of people is constantly growing.
1. Log in. Server down. Log in. Server down. 1 hour later, I could log in. Yes there are times that the sever is down, most of them last less than 10 minutes from my experience.
2. Look around a little bit. Nothing to see, just emptyness and bad use of Unreal Engine technology. Cool weather system tho.
3. Try to kill a boar for 5 minutes, dealing with bugged mobs, bugged combat, bugged controls, and bugged loot (I can't believe an MMORPG would be released with loot system bugged, unbelivable). Not sure what you are doing or not doing, but in 5 minutes you or the boar should be dead (unless you actually mean the domesticated pigs)
4. See how my client freezes everytime I turn my camera around fast. This has happened to me, lasted about 1/4 second
5. After not having fun killing wild animals for 5 minutes, I go to the nearest city (Meduli? don't remember).
6. See how everyones sheathes their weapon as they get close to me. Try to talk to people, interact with them, or fuck, at least know their name or which of them are players and which of them are NPC's. It's just not possible. UI is bad.
7. Freeze for 1 min when I enter the city. Yes, 1 minute. Never seen that happen, not so much as a stutter
8. Try to get to an NPC and talk to him. He was selling me books. To sell the stuff I got from killing animals, I had to deal with that stupid "buy gold from the NPC until it equals the amount of money your stuff is worth it". He gave me 3s coins. Cool books (taming) cost 500s. And there are dozens of books. Fuck that grind. You do know there is a skill cap right? You are never going to read all those books. If you really wanted taming, there are 3 (i think 3 ) templates that start with it. The more important the skill the more it costs. Most are only 10-50 silver.
9. See how finally, after 15 minutes, and after exploring the city a bit, my client crashes. Out of memory error. Happened to me once (out of several sessions)
10. After doing that 2-3 times, I just uninstalled the game. And I'm going today to my bank to get a refund.
Yes, I've been honest describing my gameplay session. And no, I didn't trolled.
PD: Between some of those points, you can add: "5.1. Server down. Try to log in. Server down. Try to log in. Server down. A after a few minutes/hours, server up, I get back to the game."
Just to add my 2 copper. I bought the game on Friday and started the downloaded. This is just a description of my experiences so far. I'm on the fence right now.
Download - I downloaded the 150MB launcher in about 2 hours. Meanwhile I went to Fileplanet and downloaded the old beta version from December, around 2GB before the launder ever finished downloading. Then realized I couldn't upgrade from that version so it was a waste. After the launcher finally downloaded I started the install and patch. It took 1.5 days to download and install the game. They use bit torrent and little to no one is seeding the game. I was patient. The game looked fun on the youtube videos. Just giving my experience of how long it took to DL compaired to getting a 2GB file from Fileplanet in less time than I could download the 150MB launcher.
Character Creation - Thought this was pretty decent. A couple races still don't have lore information, but overall it was pretty smooth. I didn't feel like I had to do any guess work on stats. I didn't have any issues until the end. I went to create my character and nothing happened. I had read on the official forums to click Save, if it wouldn't let you enter the world. Neither one worked. I just restarted the game and got in fine the 2nd try.
First impression. World graphics are nice. I didn't have any complaints there. I didn't notice any graphical lag with the world, and all of my settings were maxed except shadows (those were midrange)
UI - I have had issues dragging skills to my hotbar. Some skills will stick and others won't. Skills likes Rest and Logging should stick to the hotbar. However, it took a couple logins before I ever got them to stick to the bar.
Combat - Didn't seem laggy (at first.)
Server Crash - Login server down. I decided to try again the next day since I had to go to bed.
2nd attempt to play - Invalid Username or Password. I login to my master account on their website to make sure I'm using the correct information and my account wasn't hacked. Works fine on their webpage. Just can't login to the game. This was Sunday AM, I decided to wait until later in the day to try again.
3rd attempt to play - Login fine. Finally get Rest and Logging buttons onto hotbar. Test trying to swing my weapons and I see the 1-2 sec delay after each swing.
Server crashes within 5 minutes of me being logged in.
That's my experience so far. I can't really give it an honest review. The server performance seemed terrible this weekend. I'd like to actually get in the game and have a better play session. I have also pre-ordered Xsyon. In comparison the Xsyon server is much, much, more stable than the MO server. However, Xsyon still has a ton of content to add.
+1 There is no way someone can enjoy MO. A game may have bad gameplay decisions, but they MUST work if you are selling that for 50 bucks. You may like it or you may not, but it must work. Darkfall, WoW, Everquest, Warhammer, AoC or any other MMO have their gameplay style. You can love it or hate it, but they work. There are good gameplay and mechanic concepts and decisions in MO. But none of theme work. So yeah, as MT said, it doesnt feel like a game. And yeah, "no map = fun"? Lol...
Uh, if MO doesn't work what have I been playing the last few weeks?
I'm honestly curious, so please don't take this as an attempt to be a troll or anything. Could you describe a typical gameplay session for us? Because for me, it goes something like this:
1. Log in.
2. Look around a little bit.
3. Kill a couple of weasels.
4. Head to nearest city to sell off bones and fur.
5. CTD before reaching said city due to an error caused by the game looking for textures on a developer's computer instead of mine*
*For those having rendering exceptions or OOM errors, look at the error message. It's looking for files at C:usersByggareBob...etc. Unless that just so happens to be your Windows login too, it's not going to find anything there. That's sloppy coding. Period. All file references should be to the local installation of the game, and this should have been passed through some sort of Quality Assurance before the game was launched.
Ok, I'll be honest with you:
1. Log in. Server down. Log in. Server down. 1 hour later, I could log in.
Yup they're fixing their game, they take it down for server side updates and tweeks to the ingame world. Although it's very rarely an hour or close to that.
2. Look around a little bit. Nothing to see, just emptyness and bad use of Unreal Engine technology. Cool weather system tho.
The world doesn't have mobs every 20 feet, that's not what MO is about.
3. Try to kill a boar for 5 minutes, dealing with bugged mobs, bugged combat, bugged controls, and bugged loot (I can't believe an MMORPG would be released with loot system bugged, unbelivable).
Killing a pig for 5 mins... with a starter character I could probably kill one every 10-20 seconds. Mobs aren't bugged just the AI needs a little more work, combat isn't bugged, controls aren't bugged, looting isn't bugged they completely re-did it.
4. See how my client freezes everytime I turn my camera around fast.
Turn graphics down if your rig can't handel it.
UI is bad.
If you can't tell a vendor from a player consult an optician. 'Bone Vendor' will not be a player. Plus they wear different clothes.
7. Freeze for 1 min when I enter the city. Yes, 1 minute.
Again lower graphical settings or upgrade your rig, i'm using a medicore one and i'm playing on moderate graphics with no hitches/lag spikes.
Yes this system allows you to also trade your items for other items if you want, not just gold. 3s coins is 1-2 mins work killing pigs and like 10 seconds killing any high up mob. 500s is no grind at all however higher tier skills do cost more.
9. See how finally, after 15 minutes, and after exploring the city a bit, my client crashes. Out of memory error.
Again this can be fixed by lowering graphics and upgrading your PC, I had this myself.
10. After doing that 2-3 times, I just uninstalled the game. And I'm going today to my bank to get a refund.
If you think MO is a grind you are clearly new to the MMO market, if you didn't expect bugs or server issues just after launch you havn't experienced MMO launches before. Not SV's problem as they're working around the clock to fix everything up nicely.

Just wanted to comment on this point.. as the others are just stability and bug fixing. The sheathing audio you hear is being looked at by SV right now, there have been quite a few inquiries about it and I think it's going to be fixed. Starvault put a little information on their website about upcoming features and a complete overhaul of the UI is one of their bulletpoints. So they pretty much told us that their UI isn't very good.
To comment on your experience with it, all you have to do is use the help menu. You have to hold the tab button and hover your mouse over a player to select him if you'd like to see their status bar. This will tell you their name, their HP, mana, and stamina. You then press your use key to interact with the object, be it an NPC or any other object in the world that is usable. So it is quite possible, you just didn't even look at the options or else you would have figured it out.
I think the NPC vendors need a UI upgrade. It's really annoying to have to figure out exactly what I'm giving him, then figure out exactly how much money he's giving me. The NPC should give you money without you having to take it from him. Since when was it our choice to tell a seller how much THEY are going to pay? For example - Open NPC UI, Put your brownwood into a window(or right click), then vendor automatically shows you how much he's going to pay, you click accept, transaction complete. As was said earlier, they allow you to trade with the vendor for more than gold. I think there can still be some streamlining so it would cut down the time you need to interact with the NPC's.
As far as the grind goes, I usually only read books when I'm going offline. They are almost always done when I get up in the morning or when I get off of work. You still gain skill if you're logged out, and depending on your reading skill. Considering it only takes a few days to max your attributes and get a good handle on your skills, I think it's a pretty good alternative from the 6 month grinds that just about every game has out there now. I mean, think about it for a second.. if you think this game is a grind, maybe you should stick to first person shooters.
What game has the OP been playing? Only time i get lag is in a very populated city or at the money trees near fabernum, but that is due to my shitty pentium D. Main Issue I have is the crashes and UI issues. Whent he server is up and I'm playing it is so much fun.

I think people have mixed experiences, and because you had a reasonable time playing doesn't mean that the game is working smoothly for everybody else, unfortunately.
I think server uptime is still a major concern for a lot of people, even if it isn't for you.
Gonna have to agree here. I know all about the design intentions, and on paper they look great. Grief-preventing PK system that seperates true hardcore players from the whaaaa-baby newbie killers? Sounds good. Crafting system capable of churning out millions of different items? Niiiice. Unreal 3 engine? Good graphics potential.
But that's all it is-- intention and potential. The execution is clunky, sloppy, frustrating, and extremely off-putting. If Star Vault is able to wrestle a playable game out of this mess in a year's time, I may give it a second look. As of now, it's a no-go. I do take one exception and that's the graphical comparison with Darkfall. MO's graphics, while imperfect in their own right are imho better than Darkfall's. Of course, this means nothing when the game is simply unplayable.
preordered the game betablock a...and played it randomly watching its progress throughout the patches. The features I wanted namely what was listed in their alpha combt info page never materialized. I complained at Darkfall being a (LMB) game well MortalOnline is that and worst. There is no concept of balancing weapons vs armors. The game is another plate and two hand weapon hack and slash that will not allow different template vs template fights until whatever magical patch comes in down the line but by then the game will be dead.
...note to future mmo companies dont launch a pvp game if the fullness of your pvp is nothing more then (lmb)
The differences in opinion on this game is striking, frankly. People love it or hate it. Most of the hate it comments seem to be related to technical problems (not all, but most). I'm waiting for a few more patches before I give it a go.
I've seen enough comments from both sides to know I'm going to have try the game and see for myself. There's just too much noise from both sides to know what the reality is.
I liked DFO a lot too, but the grind it would take to get to the skill level in order I needed to be competitive was just too large.

If you read some posts on the MO forums, people defend it simply because there's no game trying to do what MO is trying to do, and that's make a sandboxy type game with combat that rivalled UO. The continual message is that there is a lot of *potential* in MO, but when you press to find out what the actuality of the game's state is, most people are dissatisfied with a lot of the systems in the game. The only one that comes up is crafting, which I suppose is more grand than some other games. However the combat in MO most people seem to think is mediocre at best, using adjectives like "clunky" or "slow", or "imbalanced". Much of MO's combat relies heavily on what weapon choice you're making, and then you can add a little circle strafing and stamina management.
I think there are bright spots in MO, for sure. Combat isn't one of them. Neither is stability. Crafting is a bright spot. Some of the graphics are good (some are terrible). If they evolve combat and the systems around combat (ie flagging, guild wars, territory control, etc) then it may stand up to be a decent game that is more focused on guild warfare rather than zerg warfare like DFO is now. However, after a year of waiting for a miracle patch, most people realize that it's simply not going to happen any time soon. Miracles don't happen. But I suppose there are optimists here who know that since there's no other game to play that promises what SV has promised for MO, they are going to pay to subsidize them to make the game a masterpiece. But I'm not that optimistic.

Yeah those complains on the MO forum is about some bugs but they will be solved. Just the last 2 weeks the server and client have improved lots. MO have it's own unique atmosphere. MO is imo really nice. Best melee ever done in any MMO and most dynamic crafting, etc ... with lots of potential. But that is my opinion ... sure the two famous people here on this forum will disagree on that.

I didn't even have to say it, somebody said it for me. There's always this caveat to MO and you have to add the words above.
That said, best melee in an MMO, best crafting... LOL. Vanguard had amazing crafting, so does SWG. And as for melee... Age of Chivalry is better by a LOT. Either way he's right, it's his opinion and he's entitled to it -- but I leave it to you to decide on your own, just be smart and wait until they have a free trial. You will take a max of two weeks with light gameplay to max out your character, so it's not like you'll be very far behind anybody else.

I didn't know AoChivaldry was an MMO ...
Yeah, MO have the best melee in any MMO imo. in your opinion ... not.
And ...
I have lots of fun in MO already and many other have it, EVEN thou we can expect more added into the game in the future. But if people ready your posts, 100% of your posts are purely negative here and we all know why it is so.

Vanguard and SWG (at least SWG when it had good crafting) are both non-existent now... and MO has AMAZING crafting too, so naming other examples of good crafting doesn't mean anything.

Also, Age of Chivalry isn't an MMO.
The "AoChiv isn't an MMO" isn't really pertinent, is it? If a free MOD can make better melee combat than an MMO with a budget and multiple develoeprs behind it, it just goes to show how terrible the combat actually is.
Honestly if MO's combat was more fluid like AoChiv's, it may actually be more fun.
Wish I could tell you if the game play sucks or not, but I have yet to be able to stay in game long enough to play it. Crash to desktop for one reason, then another, then a third. I am sick of trying to figure out the magic combination to get this game to run on a machine that runs everything else just fine. The "It's your machine not the game" crap is a poor excuse anyhow. This product is clearly a VERY incomplete one.

Uhh, you really don't see the design limitations inherent in an non-instanced MMO that single-player and small-scale multiplayer lobby games don't have?
Why do you think Fallen Earth doesn't play like Call of Duty?
1. Log in. Server down. Log in. Server down. 1 hour later, I could log in.
4. See how my client freezes everytime I turn my camera around fast.
9. See how finally, after 15 minutes, and after exploring the city a bit, my client crashes. Out of memory error.
(Mod Edit).
1. Yes, the server is down sometimes. Sometimes for a long time. It's because they are trying to patch the back end to establish stability. Is it annoying? Yes. Does it mean the game itself sucks? No.
2. Look around a little bit? What does that mean? You didn't explore Myrland completely at least? Because there is a lot to see. Poor use of the Unreal Engine? What? Improper use, I could understand, because from what I know about the Unreal Engine, it's not supposed to do expansive outdoor zones very well. And here Star Vault has created a large continent with very long view distances. Ingenious use of the Unreal Engine, maybe?
3. If you're "trying" to kill a boar for five minutes, you're doing something wrong. Learn to aim, maybe. Rabbits I might miss the first swing with a lowbie character, but one shot, when I hit them. Center of the screen. The loot bug has been fixed already. Yes, it should have been working properly at release, but it is now fixed. I have no problem looting stuff, now.
4. See graphics settings. Lower them to min. Then raise them one step at a time until you get acceptable performance.
5. Good for you.
6. The sheathing bug is acknowledged by the devs and is being worked on. It's not possible to know someone's name? Tab and move mouse to put crosshair over someone. Boom. Name. Health bar, if you target them. Which simply means you leave crosshair on them when you release tab. NPCs stand still. PCs are running all asunder. Pretty easy to know which is which.
7. Again, graphics settings. Maybe shadows. Lots of players running around... have you ever played an MMO before?
8. Grind? 500 S would take a few hours of tree hugging while swinging a pickaxe. Which, while you're OMGWTF "grinding" for silver, will also be raising your STR and CON stats, so you don't have to "try" to kill a boar for five minutes. Also, there are a ton of books for like 10 S. Some for 50 S. Grind, indeed.
9. See how finally you should look at the forums and see other people had the OOM error and that there is a way to solve it.
10. You don't deserve money back. It's not Star Vault's fault you don't want to take the time to figure out a game that doesn't hold your hand every step of the way.
Playing | GW2 Wanting | Pantheon Watching | Crowfall Retired | WAR, Cabal, MO, CO, SHK, WoW, FFXIV: ARR
And THAT my friend is the only thing that matters. Will enough people chose to resub to keep the game afloat? No one can answer that yet.
Doubt it, game is poorly optimized and doesn't look like it will get better any time soon. Maybe in the future if people are still paying for a beta.
Enjoy.
Please explain why you think MO will not get better any time soon. One week, 2 patches. I expect the same this week. What's the reasoning behind your conclusion?

Which is a good reason why MO should have taken their combat and controls to the 3rd person playground. Immersion only means so much if you can't get your core features to not look like two andre the giants doing running clothelines at each other over and over. FPS MMO's have never worked the way online FPS games do because of latency and world size. I would literally shit and piss my pants if a MMO was released with all of the features MO has and WoW-like combat.
Uhh, you really don't see the design limitations inherent in an non-instanced MMO that single-player and small-scale multiplayer lobby games don't have?
Why do you think Fallen Earth doesn't play like Call of Duty?
This isn't an issue of server limitations, it's an issue of poorly designed combat. SV opted to have lots of hitboxes, and are using an "MMO" solution to create their gameworld. The limitations are almost the same. The problem is, they did a poor job of implementing combat, which is what makes it clunky, slow, and boring. To boot, most of your stature in combat comes from equipment choice -- go figure on that one, since people hate WOW so much, they did the same thing without pretty magic armor. The swing arcs are horrible, the lag makes the poor combat even worse, and with the lack of tools in their sandbox, it's basically a gankfest.
Wanna know why Fallen Earth doesn't play like Call of Duty? Because it's not meant to, as they designed their own engine and game specifically to actually work. SV designed a game they had no experience to support, and now that they put the game "live", they aren't even going to bother giving it 24/7 support. Great MMO philosohy there.

It is an issue of server limitation actually. All of your other opinions I can agree with. There's a reason that there aren't any FPS MMO's that work like their single player counterparts, it's technology and you can't actually sit there and deny it. I mean, we can agree to disagree on everything else.. but don't make yourself look silly.

It's not a server limitation, it's a design limitation. Age of Chivalry does certain things that yea -- might be difficult to do in an MMO. I'm not talking about those things, like tracking "headshots" (because the latency would kill it), or tracking a lot of hitboxes or whatever (although MO decided to do this ANYWAY). Take those things away from the equation -- think about the DESIGN.
MO right now as designed, relies heavily on what weapon you use in order to win. Stamina management is idiotic by most accounts, as it goes down very, very fast. The rest of the game is basically a matter of weird timing and swinging, and only in ideal situations if lag is at a minimum. Age of Chivalry's components of swing arcs, weapon choice and limitation (so there are benefits and disadvantages to each class), fluidity of play, and more make it a decent game. Honestly, I find Age of Chivalry quite boring by itself -- and would much rather have the Mount and Blade type combat however if SV can't get the copy of Age of Chivalry right, there's no way in hell they are going to come close to Mount and Blade.

You clearly don't have any recent experience with MO combat. Stam drain does NOT drain fast; I rarely run out and I suck at PvP. MO has weapon arcs, and different weapons have different characteristics. Please tell us an MMO that does melee combat as well as Age of Chivalry or Mount and Blade.
Comments
Say that to all those people enjoying MO at the MO forum and you will see. You might not like MO, but lots of others do and that number of people is constantly growing.
My sig is just as logical as your posts are
I think people have mixed experiences, and because you had a reasonable time playing doesn't mean that the game is working smoothly for everybody else, unfortunately.
I think server uptime is still a major concern for a lot of people, even if it isn't for you.
preordered the game betablock a...and played it randomly watching its progress throughout the patches.
Doubt it, game is poorly optimized and doesn't look like it will get better any time soon. Maybe in the future if people are still paying for a beta.
Enjoy.
(Mod Edit).

Please explain why you think MO will not get better any time soon. One week, 2 patches. I expect the same this week. What's the reasoning behind your conclusion?
