It is an issue of server limitation actually. All of your other opinions I can agree with. There's a reason that there aren't any FPS MMO's that work like their single player counterparts, it's technology and you can't actually sit there and deny it. I mean, we can agree to disagree on everything else.. but don't make yourself look silly.
It's not a server limitation, it's a design limitation. Age of Chivalry does certain things that yea -- might be difficult to do in an MMO. I'm not talking about those things, like tracking "headshots" (because the latency would kill it), or tracking a lot of hitboxes or whatever (although MO decided to do this ANYWAY). Take those things away from the equation -- think about the DESIGN.
MO right now as designed, relies heavily on what weapon you use in order to win. Stamina management is idiotic by most accounts, as it goes down very, very fast. The rest of the game is basically a matter of weird timing and swinging, and only in ideal situations if lag is at a minimum. Age of Chivalry's components of swing arcs, weapon choice and limitation (so there are benefits and disadvantages to each class), fluidity of play, and more make it a decent game. Honestly, I find Age of Chivalry quite boring by itself -- and would much rather have the Mount and Blade type combat however if SV can't get the copy of Age of Chivalry right, there's no way in hell they are going to come close to Mount and Blade.
You clearly don't have any recent experience with MO combat. Stam drain does NOT drain fast; I rarely run out and I suck at PvP. MO has weapon arcs, and different weapons have different characteristics. Please tell us an MMO that does melee combat as well as Age of Chivalry or Mount and Blade.
There isn't one. And for good reason, because it's hard to do in Mount and Blade, and impossible to do well in an MMO using current technology.
Next gen... maybe. I think the IDTech5 engine will be a good bedding ground for this, at least on paper... but it remains to be seen.
EDIT: I should say, that MO's combat *could* be great. It's just not. Instead SV started to develop half baked ideas like thievery and other things and not flesh out PvP and their combat system entirely. So instead of having a game with one killer feature that keeps people hooked, it's got no killer features and a bunch of mediocre ones that are really buggy. Ah, what could have been if SV had some management that was actually experienced.

If you dual wield your starter sword and pickaxe then yes it will take 5 minutes.
If you only use the sword, it works MUCH better.
I made this mistake for the first 3 days *facepalm*
Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76) Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe
Lol, what I find funny is how slappy, herc and the others are all buddy-buddy soley on the premise of tearing SV a new one with any chance they get. I fear any game you guys move to, and not because the game would suck, just because you would do everything you can to convince others it does.
I don't think I need to convince anybody, as there are plenty of people complaining about the game without my say-so.
I'm here for the entertainment value, as most games provide. For you it provides entertainment in the gameplay. For me it provides entertainment in how poorly executed it is. That said, at least we are both getting entertainment out of MO, albeit in different ways
Are you guys seriously making personal attacks on people that aren't even here to defend themselves?
Not to mention I find you both hard to believe on faith alone... Mainly because I've seen y'all make false claims before in order to make SV look bad.
Were you refering to me? Personal attack? HUH?
For your sake.. a simple search resulted in the info I referenced. The exact quote was "My plan was always to try to get in to a game company, but go for any programming job meanwhile to get my experience up. I got lucky and had contacts in Starvault already, so I only spent about six months as a non game dev programmer. ( I programmed milk sorting machines, yay... -.- )"
So what I sated was.. once again.. 100% correct and not in any way shape or form a personal attack.
Sure thing. I had to find them again, it's been awhile since the devs freely convo'd on these boards. Which I cannot say I blame them for not doing at the moment due to all the flaming and idiocracy....

As you stated its a competitive market indeed. Most companies you look at require years of experience, some don't even recruit anything but senior ones. As a programmer that really wasn't much of an issue when I applied to a game dev university class. Experience in PROGRAMMING is rather easy to get, there are tons of companies hiring us. Experience in game dev programming however is a bit more tricky.

Your questions are a bit more tricky to answer since I've only ever worked at Starvault when it comes to games, and not even for very long either...
But so far it's been a blast. Of course it has its ups and downs like any job, but to my experience the ups by far outweigh the downs here. The only thing that can wear me down a bit is our work hours... Then again, consider that Starvault is an extremely small and independant studio. We just can't afford to "slack" in this stage of our evolution. The work hours I'm plowing into this game I do of my own free will. If I don't, we don't get a game. Simple as that.
I landed this job after modding UE2-2.5 for like.. 2 years or something, as a hobby.
UE have been a great engine for modders to use for a while now, HL2 is also good but more companies use UE3 (I think.. there's a lot of em..)
OFC you need to know your way around c++/java (java is kinda similar to unrealscript so that helps) (so.. stay in school ^^).
For a big project like this you have to do a whole lot of programming since the engine is built for SP or MP games. Modding is different from using the pure-engine since modding mostly involves changing and adding things to an already existing game, we had/have to build a lot from the ground up.

1. I'm guessing anyone can make an account here, which seems would be an advisable action if you're gonna be a developer. Then correct info can be offered. I'm sure most developers check this site as well as others, if not, they need to.
2. And yet you do the same........provide no proof.
Current games playing: MechWarrior Online Games being watched: Project Genom Favorite played games: SWG, RomaVictor, and Xsyon
OP I think it would be difficult to find someone who thinks that Mortal Online is a good game. I actually hear more people saying "Great concept", "Good idea", and so forth. I have never seen anyone actually say the game is good. Which I pretty much would concur with due to just looking at any youtube video and seeing how craptastic it is currently. You can't forget though how absolutely craptastic Darkfall was on release either. Darkfall still isn't up to what they had originally promised for game play, but slowly it is getting better, but not at the speed in which I would like to see development occur. They went with a new expansion before fixing some of the bigger bugs and issues with it. Mortal Online currently is a first time game staff that doesn't really know anything yet. They are like a baby, and this is their attempt at crawling along the floor. Will they stand? With this game I highly doubt it as it just doesn't have a solid base currently due to the horrible lag, desync, fail combat, and terrible rip off design of Ultima Online. When they decide to try and be creative and original I think they may have a chance, but trying to re-create a UO3d just isn't doing it for them. One day they may walk, but I see this one being a slow crawl out to the garbage dump.

I'd like to point out that I did in fact dig up the post with the quotes from the developers about their work history and provided the "proof" asked for a few posts back
One of them did in fact have 6 months experience consisting of working on a milk machine prior to working for StarVault... exactly as I stated.

If enough people are complaining about the game, why do you make sure you have such a strong presence in every thread?
...Oh, because you just confessed you're a troll (again).
Question is: Are you really just trolling, or are you adopting this position because you can find no other 'valid' reason to obsess with MO so much?
I suppose I could ask you the same thing -- do you need to be here to defend every action SV makes? Including defending unethical billing practices?
This is a discussion forum, and the purpose is to do just that -- discuss things. I post here while I'm at work, and you'll rarely find a single post outside of the "work" hours. Occasionally I work weekends, and nights, and that's the only time you'll find a post from me there. During the day I pass the time here and at other sites, and it's fun debate and entertaining. If you take it very seriously well, I really don't know what to say. People here are calling me the "worst kind of player" because what? I have a differring opinion on something that you hold in a high regard? Jeez.
I will remain here, and remain within the TOS with my posts, and I'm not here to flame you or others as you have constantly tacked labels onto myself and Slapshot as trolls, amongst other names. That's your prerogative. It just shows that I can have some fun during my work day and post retorts to your own thoughts on MO, and your retorts devolve into namecalling. Does it make your argument stronger, or weaker? I don't know, but I certainly think it's a touch childish, but if that's the way you want to go -- have at it. I'll stay on topic and talk about the game, despite the fact you don't like what I'm saying. I am still entitled to say it, and you're fully entitled to leave.

I don't defend every action SV makes. I have criticised the bugs, the server stability, some of the GM decisions (all of which can be found in this forum). Problem is, You're trying to portray yourself as an aloof observer ... this is clearly not the case... you are obviously very, very emotionally invested in the subject matter of this forum.
I played darkfall. Got rid of it because of the controls, as well as the world.. Look up, clouds go 100mph overhead, buildings in cities just decorations. I want a more realistic sandbox to play in..
Did the mo open beta. Got rid of it because of the controls and obvious need of more development time before release.. Lots of potential, but man, the bugs and just overall lack of polish. I'm all for indie devs, but for the love of god, but your A game hat on..
Looking at FE right now, not a total sandbox, but gets alot of "wow, this is underated", and it's not circling the drain like Vanguard and some other games..
It'd sure be nice to see a polished sandbox mmo that didn't have fps controls.. Not sure what the deal is w/ sandbox games all coming out fps and crap.. If I wanted an fps, I'd buy a damn fps.. Why can't mmorpg's stick to what they do good..mmorpg?!..
"If I'd asked my customers what they wanted, they'd have said a faster horse." - Henry Ford
MO is kind of craptastic right now. There's no system to legitimately PvP, if you want to PvP you have to become a murderer or hunter reds. And I agree, the combat seems clunky/laggy etc.
Also, having no in-game map is highly annoying, it's not immersive, it's just annoying. Being lost is in no way, shape, or form, fun.
However DF isn't all that either. but I like it's combat more than MO.
One thing that MO did right though is the ease of skill gain, where DF fails.
MO still needs quite a bit of work before it's a worthwhile game.
So true, only thing MO has over DF is a skill gain because of the skill cap.

I like the fps-style MMOs that have been coming out. To each, his own, I guess.
For a polished, non-fps game that's upcoming, take a look at Perpetuum.
The game is pure garbage, case closed. You can debate it all you want but at the end of the day the only people who are somewhat satisfied is the very, very, very small niche market who believes MO will serve a greater purpose and is the savior the the MMO "sandbox" genre.. Get real.
If you want to invest in garbage, feel free. Just don't complain when you reach the top of the pile.
You angry?
MO is an awsome game, you must not of played it......I like to talk out my ass too!
Troll harder.
I've played the game, I've played retail, I've uninstalled.
Thanks.
He was joking .... and yes Mortal Online has fallen flat on its face whereas Darkfall still has plenty of potential.

Both games still have potential. MO needs to work on stability bugs, but it has a ton of potential.
DF is finally started to see the light, and looks like it might start making more serious changes that could keep it from dying. It's still REALLY weak as a sandbox, however.
I think some of you forget the incredibly buggy and unplayable POS that Darkfall was around launch...
Mortal's launch was smoother in my opinion. Of course a game that just launched is going to be behind a game that has been out for a full year. Give the game time to grow and improve!
+1 There is no way someone can enjoy MO. A game may have bad gameplay decisions, but they MUST work if you are selling that for 50 bucks. You may like it or you may not, but it must work. Darkfall, WoW, Everquest, Warhammer, AoC or any other MMO have their gameplay style. You can love it or hate it, but they work. There are good gameplay and mechanic concepts and decisions in MO. But none of theme work. So yeah, as MT said, it doesnt feel like a game. And yeah, "no map = fun"? Lol...
Uh, if MO doesn't work what have I been playing the last few weeks?

Well that is just it, Darkfall was absolutely fine at release, I am not sure you were playing if you think otherwise. Yes they had issues with sieges but not day to day things like going near a rock or just the whole host of bugs that prevail over MO.
You can NOT compare Darkfall at release to the pile of steaming crap the MO is at the moment. Good god! Seriously were do you get the idea of that from? Not from reality that is for sure.

For a big project like this you have to do a whole lot of programming since the engine is built for SP or MP games. Modding is different from using the pure-engine since modding mostly involves changing and adding things to an already existing game, we had/have to build a lot from the ground up.

You good now? Or shall you attempt to flame me once again for trying to provide information in regards to someone's question?

1. I'm guessing anyone can make an account here, which seems would be an advisable action if you're gonna be a developer. Then correct info can be offered. I'm sure most developers check this site as well as others, if not, they need to.
2. And yet you do the same........provide no proof.
Current games playing: MechWarrior Online
Games being watched: Project Genom
Favorite played games: SWG, RomaVictor, and Xsyon

Thought the exact same thing as original poster... within moments of entering the game I felt as if a thief had just stolen my wallet.
I didn't think anything could, but THIS trash did actually make darkfall look like a polished gem.
Please stop engaging in personal attacks with other users.

Thanks for a truly non-biased and fair review....
So true, only thing MO has over DF is a skill gain because of the skill cap.
I like the fps-style MMOs that have been coming out. To each, his own, I guess.
For a polished, non-fps game that's upcoming, take a look at Perpetuum.
