Warhammer Going F2P?

Warhammer Going F2P?

With the buzz of "Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millenium Online" what do you think will become of Warhammer online? The only practical thing for mythic to do is follow the trend of Turbine and re-release warhammer as F2P hoping to draw more players to their network while building a subscription based platform for DMO.

As we witnessed with Turbine, players were drawn to DDO but it did not bring more subs to Lotro. 2 big mmos by one company seems to lead both to the F2P market. Will this happen to mythic?

LOTRO F2P isn't even out yet. Are you seeing into the future??

I was excited when I saw the clips for "Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millenium Online" and I'm wanting to play this badly but what happens to Warhammer? What will become of both of them?

LotRO and DDO are being marketed to WoW players as a WoW player's second game, something to do when your WoW server is down.

I don't know if WAR can fit that niche.

What WAR needs is a retune and reboot, neither of which are likely to happen. I believe I read where Games Workshop is anxious to get their IP back after what Mythic did with it. EA will most likely shut the game down completely  before they offer it up free. To change the pricing model at this stage would mean that they would have to devote resources to new content to sell in some sort of cash shop. I don't see that happening.

War in it's theme is more like WoW than Lotro. In fact, I thought War was somewhat of a rip in it's design. Lotro in it's theme, design and gameplay was many ways so much different than WoW and people wanting to escape WoW played Lotro (I know I did). Warhammer was more like the "I want to play something like WoW but I'm tired of WoW right now" mmo.

WAR needs a 3rd faction expansion but since EA wont invest in that the only option left is to go F2P or ask the janator to turn out the lights when everyone has left the building.

I know some people liked WAR and I'll happily admit I enjoyed playing my Blackguard till I found how unbalanced PvP was given the set ups. Constant rain of fire became a little boring. But with all the cuts and the very little that can be achieved by a dev team of an old man and his dog the game is going to slowly die unless EA do something. And in all honesty I think they couldn't care less about the game or they might have something in the works. Instead I think they will let it die and focus on ToR.

I enjoyed War, didn't love it but I've been expecting more from Mythic since it's release. Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millenium Online looks like it will destroy the hopes for War making a comeback. It's being done by Gamesworkshop with the help of Vigil games so will the current situation with mythic cause warhammer to fold or go f2p? If this happens, what will become of DMO? Do you think this DMO has a chance to build where War failed or do you think it could meet War's fate as well?

I have thought for some time now that going F2P would be the best thing for WAR, but I don't think it will ever happen. It will take some investment to retool and create cash shop content and I doubt they will take the risk.

Unfortunately, I think the game will die.

If war dies it will be a sad day. I was hoping that mythic would do more to build the player's confidience in their company as right now, I can't re-sub until I'm sure what will become of War. Sucks.

It is EA... of course they will just pull the plug on it.

Heh, those that played EnB will not forget...

I dont even think that WAR would work as F2P. EA should put it out of its misery...

but watever happens with the game, noone at Mythic should be allowed to get 1 mile close to anything ressembling game development again. ever. Mythic deservers to be disbanded. they have deserved it since 2005...

While Warhammer 40K will lhave a substantial impact on WAR, This game is so far off that I doubt WAR will change any time soon because of it.

If WAR goes F2P I doubt its because of a planned MMO to be released 2 yrs from now.

Remember, its all vaporware until you get your beta invite.

at the pace its going  I dont think WAR will see the end of 2010. Guess that excludes worrying about upcoming games

LotR doesn't go F2P until this fall so no one knows if will bring more or not yet.

Will they make Warhammer F2P? Well they just got rid of the games producer, Josh Drescher...I wouldn't hold my breath for anything significant to happen to this game but maybe a final server consolidation or a closing.

Ok to all those who say war isnt a good game...Im sorry your so convoluted and corrupted by wow that nothing else matters. Yes Mythic dropped the ball, Yes Ea sucks balls: I know use to work for them, and yes lack of content and third faction is a downfall. However you also must look at this as an investment.

Company makes a mmo for a revenue stream. Now if that revenue stream produces then you reinvest in it to keep the revenue going. Content=investment into product. Now war had a solid launch, however they didnt do enough testing, and rushed it into the market. Right now they are on the rvr focus as this is what sets the game appart from wow. However if it doesnt begin to expand the pve content it will become a stale game of doing the same thing over and over again.

Now it is in its second year. First two years of wow the game was crap and if it wasnt for loyal players it would have died. Now much like the rest of the economy most major publishers are only interested in a solid performing product. However it is this sorta short sighted thinking that will lead to more title going down the tube. They have a solid platform that with some more investment could actually devide the market. As it stand the fantasy mmo market consist something like this. 66% of the market is owned by WOW. leaving 33% to games like war, eq2, lotr, ddo, etc.

Now eq has a loyal fan base and will always have players, however if you take some time and effort and about 20 mill in cash an invest in a 5 year over haul and content expansion you would see war and wow neck and neck.....

Now with the 40k mmo coming out no one has been able to confirm or deny a few things. Is it a fps mmo or a rpg. No one knows. If its a fps then I would think you would see it doing rather well as it would offer a huge difference of game play then games like wow.

Now in order for a game to get any new content it must show it can make money. Best way to make that happen is get your friends to play. Spend a little money, Invest in a game and you will see content. Hell even the free to play games you have to pay to get new content.

Nobody does, and nobody ever will, look at it that way.  They cut to the chase and see failure.  Words like "investment" and "potential" are irrelevant.

no they are not they are the core of why companies like ea scraps a game rather then let it grow into adult hood.

As gamers we bitch alot but rarely do we sit and think why such things happen. And as for clear cut and the chase or what not...No it isnt. Its over glorified fan boy bs......Just go to any warcraft event and try to talk about any other game that isnt made by Blizzard. You will get beat by every geek. And thats a sad thing to have to live with.

I don't know where you people are getting your info and statistics and whatnot from but WAR is not going anywhere.  It's obvious that the haters don't actually play WAR....Again, put on your little teabagger hats and cry more.

I am suprised the game has lasted this long. Unless there are some unkown plans in the works to make this game better then I predict this game will be done by the end of the year.

Damn - I don't think I've ever read so much hyperbole and exaggerations in one post in my life. Amazing. Won't see the end of 2010? Lol.

My theory is they'll keep WAR going until SWTOR releases, and assuming its the big hit that EA expects it to be no one will notice when they turn off the lights on WAR shortly thereafter.

who cares, that game was dead within 6 months or release.

played:WoW and Eve off and on 5 years
Tried:CoH/V, PoTBS, War, TR, STO, FE
    TOR is likely to rock

Well 40k's impact on WAR is really a moot point.  The nearest release estimate for 40k is 2013, WAR probably wont last that long anyway.
