A game is much more likely to flop if it compromises gameplay for the sake of lore (rather than the other way around.)

Gameplay without lore can still be incredibly fun.  Lore without gameplay?  Not so much.

So the arguments which hold weight are those which focus on the gameplay decisions (like the people criticizing a 2-faction game having weaker PVP than a 3-faction game; that's a very valid critique.)

There is a flop of a game known as Warhammer Online. I suggest you go read about it and the concessions made to "gameplay" which lead to the butchering the IP and a 2 faction system which nailed its coffin.

Warhammer online had/has a lot of flaws, but the lore having anything to do with its downfall is not correct. I was driven away from the game due to the bad BAAAAAD quality. Bad graphics, bad performance, horrible HORRIBLE social features (no general chat? Really). At no point at all did i ever catch myself thinking "AMG WTF??! Goblins can't use these kind of staffs. Only the witches of western Arkhuzal know how to tap it power. OMG IM OUT"... I did NOT care about the lore at all. It was the technical difficulties of the game that drove me away.

I dont think the thing people are getting worries over is the minor stuff. its the major stuff that could have ramifications. In Warhammer (tabletop and lore), it is not unknown for humans, elves and dwarves to team up, makes it easy for dev's to make a 2 faction system. However, in 40k, you will never see the space marines, Imp guard team up with the eldar. its just not done. this could lead to concerns by the player base. its almost like SWG in a way. there are jedi everywhere in that now, in a time period where there were bugger all. Yes i suspect there will be people out there who are still GAF. but for some it does matter.

But I still hope they make this well.

Im sure that alot of TT and Lore fans would take this as the second german invasion of polland. But you guys ( now i just pressume you are one of them, if not then im sorry) only make out about 0,1% of the total target market. Do you think that R41d3rK1d1337 gives a flying f... about "space marines, Imp guard team up with the eldar". Let me give you a clue. He wouldnt even blink! He would just sip his Red Bull and keep on enjoying the game? Why? Because he got to play the character he thought looked the coolest. The space marine Imp. Guiard that you would have made NPC only because of the L0r3.

I think the OP is missing the point of the harsh criticism of 2 factions. Basically, theres nothing for people to lose by being vocal on the issue now. The earlier the better, before the game is too far along to be changed. Without the criticism, it increases the chance of a horrid 2 faction system. Anything that can reduce that outcome is worthwhile IMO. And all it takes is a few minutes to throw a post on facebook and sign a petition.

Could someone please recap the whole 2-faction horror story for me? What's the problem with 2 factions? Is it because everyone else did it? Or because of t3h l0r3? Or is it something totaly different?
