Bad day at CCP. Latest update says midday Thursday:

"EVE Online, including its associated official websites and services, is currently unavailable. We estimate bringing everything back online by midday UTC on Thursday, June 24. We will continue to update this page as often as possible to keep everyone apprised of our progress. We apologize for any inconvenience and appre...ciate your patience. Please rest assured that we are doing all we can to restore service as quickly as possible."

I completely forgot about the scheduled downtime last night, but realized I was going to be cutting it close with my skill queue and when I would have normally logged on so I set a 17d day skill. Lucky choice i guess :P

Poor CCP - can you imagine the hate mail they are getting and will receive via petition...

Which is sad. The only people sending hate mail though are those that have zero idea of the complexity of this move and all the many many things that could and did go wrong.

Pretty much... I'm not quite THAT technically minded, but the stuff on the Dev Blog last week made it sound like there is shed loads of work.

Of course, people are prolly smashing F5 on the eve online homepage trying to get it to load, which will probably overload it and crash it too ;)  And all the petitions will swamp the GMs, making it a nightmare for anyone with actual issues to get help...

Several years back, the Dark Age of Camelot servers died a miserable death, and half the player base couldn't get back on for about a fortnight... Was hilarious at the screaming raging people clawing up the walls as they couldn't play a game!

Oh and for additional comedy gold, the comments on the EvE Facebook page have spiralled into screaming at one another!

    hehe from the Facebook page:

EVE Online Current estimates from our round-the-clock server crew puts Tranquility back online around 16:00 GMT, following extensive testing. More updates here, on Twitter and www.eveonline.com as soon as they are available.

That's three and a half hours from now :)

Someone either killed the hamsters, they lost the power lead, or someone dropped something very big and expensive.

    Or all of the above!

If people think it genuinely will come back up at 5pm, they are living in cloud-cuckoo land.

while i find much of the nerdrage amusing, my entertainment is tempered by the fact that the people doing the most complaining probably lead very sad lives.

also, hasn't anyone at CCP ever watched star trek?  scotty would never have given a six hour estimate for a server relocation.

Relax people. in a few hours we will all be back to playing with cyber spaceships again.

Go do something in the meantime instead of stewing in front of the Eve log in screen or on the forums.

    Peace.

They kinda have to give a timeline 'cos the players are paying for a service. If it was free-to-play they could take as long as they liked... That being said, CCP has been pretty spot on with their timelines until this... event.

What dream world are you living in?  You obviously weren't around for any of the patches.  CCP almost NEVER meets a patch or technical timeline.  The only timeline they meet is the 1-hour daily downtime, which is a reboot that generally takes 20 minutes unless they have server-side hotfixes to deploy.

It's law of averages really. When you give 10-15 timeline updates per patch, your bound to have one that is relatively 'spot on". :P

Kidding aside, they seem to have a pretty consistent history of underestimating downtime for anything but the standard maintenance. Usually the official forums are up though and that always makes for some fun...

Rumors are that this special downtime is because of a database corruption, which resulted in a general reset of all players.

So if this is true, they'd better have a backup ready.  :P

Like the people that publically announced this would be a 6 hour DT (now entering it's 29th hour) ?

If CCP needed 2 days to do this, they should have said 2 days.

Delays of this magnitude make me suspect software problems. Someone dropped the hard drive containing the character data...?

You have to wonder what these people are doing crying out that they can't get onto a GAME.  For the amount of money 24hours costs, you really have to wonder, and chances are CCP will give something to people to make amends.  It won't please everyone, but that's the nature of the beast I suppose.

This could be argued really... Another way of looking at it, would be to say the monthly subs just rents some space on their server...  The ships and the gear and everything else belong to CCP, you just rent some space for a character.  And chances are the EULA has a "There will be downtime clause" so they don't have to do anything.

Moving a server farm I would have thought would take a good while - had they said "No service for 48 hours" then people would have still complained, BUT when they came up after 24-36 hours, people would have been happy.

I suppose on the bright side, I'm not missing anything as I've still not managed to create my character :) hehe

Well....I don't want to hear any more bitching that new players can't catch up to vets now if that's the case!

Id heard it was because theyd screwed up the DB as well and were having to do a rollback but i trust that comment as much as i trust CCPs one about it coming back up.

1 thing that is certain is that they took down their own forum to stop people voicing an opinion.

I'm betting we see the phrase "Data Corruption" some time in the next few hours ;)  Must be something pretty icky to cause so many problems.

You have to question why they host the game servers on the same hardware as the webpage, forums and everything else... Unless they've just turned all that off to prevent the forums being hammered with RAAAAGE!
