The 2nd Video looks good, but guess what?...It was from Beta in 2009, before they changed the engine and the graphics.
Before, the skybox was awesome, textures looked good, the far landscape had a great blur effect and detail giving a real awesome depth, shadows looked great, was at least graphically good. Now graphics look like crap, and animations are stiff.

Static sky box v.s. a dynamic weather system the second is more important to the game. Textures have been lowered, shadows are fine if you can play with em it´s just optimisation on there end now. As for animations some look brilliant others look medicore at best I wouldn´t say crap though they tend to remain fluid.

Thing is their weather system was done by an intern and really imo doesn't look good at all. clouds are parralel and perpendicular lines, have no "thickness" and have some clipping bugs, they don't look "real" imo. So overall, I prefere a good skybox than a bad dynamic cloud. Texures have been lowered but no just that, lots of effects have been removed. and most of all, they implemented mLod which makes the far distance look very bad and polygonal.
This is what MO looked at the begining in alpha/beta :

Don't tell me this is what the game looks like nows please.
The clouds can be horrendous now but other times they´re nice to look at, yet again your complaint is about the game not having high res textures activated. With high res everything will look better, along with when a few place holders are replaced ect. The clouds in that picture do nothing, they remain exactly on that spot 24 hours a day, our new less pretty looking clouds give us rain, lightning ect which all looks pretty impressive. It´s dynamic and sooner or later it will have a temperature system to go with it.
MO still brags the longest view distance of any MMO. Large battles or an even larger view distance?
MO could brag about its viewing distance when it looked like this :
now it looks like this
that is because of the engine change and MLOD.
So honestly, I would rather have less view distance and better graphics up close.
This is oblivion, I think it uses the same engine, but they chose to tweak the viewing distance with a fog effect yet it looks great and still makes you feel immersed with a feeling of depth in the world.
Please see here for real screens of the game, it shows how good the weather looks and some of the pretty scenery with close ups of character models.
Also the screen shots you compare are not ones players have had ingame, the high res textures are not in yet and the foilage if that´s the correct word and grass and trees are placeholders until it´s optimised for speedtree ect. So the ingame screenshot will soonish look a lot more like the high res screenshot taken.

I read somewhere that the housing was instanced. Is this true? It didn't sound like it from the forum link you provided...

Nothing in MO is instanced at all, with housing the door is locked but you can obtain a key by getting one from the owner or killing someone and looting their key. Which would mean they can access and empty your house chest so you have to becareful when running with those.

Good. I can't remember where I read it. And I have been looking for it since I posted that...

Cool to see the gameplay video. TY!
No, housing is not instanced but there are pre-determined buildspots that are available.
