There's nothing in this interview that even kinda worries me. At least wait another year or two till we get a very good idea about what the game will look and play like.
If the game is still 3 years away, nothing is set in stone and anything could change. It's not like they said they're going to include a Hello Kitty faction or something.
There's nothing in this interview that even kinda worries me. At least wait another year or two till we get a very good idea about what the game will look and play like.
Except that they're attempting to make a WoW clone? Other than that little detail, nothing to worry about.
Although I kinda always thought the purpose of these interviews is to build up hype, not give us something to worry about.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

At what point in the article did you see anything about 'WoW clone'? The most I saw was "very friendly to the WoW player". That's it. Now considering that WoW is the #1 MMO out there BAR NONE, wouldn't you kinda think they would want to be friendly to those players?
If I was developing an MMO, you can bet your sweet @$$ I'm gonna look at the most successful mmos and see what they're doin right. Just because I like the UI from one game and use it in my game doesn't mean I'm making a clone. It means i'm trying to avoid reinventing the wheel.
Look at cars. A Honda isn't a 'Ford clone'. I promise you. Go ask any grease-monkey and he'll be able to give you a laundry list of reasons why a Honda isn't a 'Ford clone'. Course i'm sure that most ppl are just arguing the 'clone' issue just to be jerks and push other ppls buttons to see what kind of a reaction they can get.
Sorry if this has been said and maybe is hasn't, but the guys who made WoW were orignally task to make a warhammer game for the people that own the rights to warhammer...now this was a long time ago and i am not sure of the time line but this is a fact and people that say warhammer is a ripoff of wow are completely wrong in fact is is WoW that has been ripping off from warhammer all along...welp the idea at least...
The game warhammer has been out at least a decade before WoW was brought to market...
With that interview I've basically lost the desire to play this game as much as I love 40k, I can't play a game that is being dumbed down to cater to WoW players.

Yeah, it's been said. Though it's probably pretty safe to say that we can copy a goodly chunk of the warhammer: Age of reckoning forums and just paste them into this forum to save people the time of reposting 'it's a clone' and the 'which came first' arguments.
Not that I think that would stop some ppl from posting those same arguments again. I guess I sholdn't be surprised. Hardly anyone posts what aspect of the game they like or what they hope the game will be like.
Instead we get what aspects they hate, what ppl KNOW (psychically) the game will be like and how much it will suck.
ROFLMAO, every time I hear someone even say the word "WoW Clone" I laugh my self silly. Calling anything a clone means that it is a copy of the original, and since WoW is a jigsaw puzzle of mechanics from ALL MMO games that have come before it, having things in common with it doesn't make it a clone. I know this will fire some people up, and believe me I have read all the arguments on this matter, and frankly they are all kind of shallow, but this is my opinion so love it or hate it.
The fundamental basis of what you are saying is similiar to people calling the Ferrari or Lamborghini a Ford clone.
But again, the over-literal sense in which you are applying the word does as much injustice to language as the people calling the other MMOs clones.
Clones are individual replicas of originals.
However, the context in which it is used is that the term "clone" is referencing that the game is based too similiarly to the original (in this case, WoW) that it looks and feels too much like the original to be its own game. Meaning too much was borrowed from the original for it to really stand on its own legs and defaults it to being sub-par.
The term "wow clone" was coined to reference anything that was too similiar to wow that didn't have enough original mechanics or gameplay to be called its own game. It sounds much better than "wow golem" or "wow frankenstien".
I'm not fired up, but I did want to offer you a fresh look at your stance being just as silly as those you oppose that isn't quite as shallow.
This has to be the most knee-jerk responses I've seen since I last watched Ong Bak...
I take it you haven't been to the LotRO boards here lately?
I've been intentionally ignoring them. There's only so much one man can take.
Totally understandable.
"Oh my, how horrible, someone is criticizing a MMO. Oh yeah, that is what a forum is about, looking at both sides. You rather have to be critical of anything in this genre as of late because the track record of these major studios has just been appalling." -Ozmodan
That was a clumsy PR statement. It was probably based on the assumption that the majority of western MMO players play, or have played WoW extensively (which is probably true), but forgetting that a huge part of the more vocal MMO opinionists on the internet hate WoW clones with a passion.
Clumsy statement aside, though, all he's saying is that a lot of people who like WoW will find something similar to like in WH40KO (true for most MMOs, not just WoW clones), that the transition will be easy (most likely similar interface which is true for most MMOs, not just WoW clones) and that marketing will target current WoW players directly (True for most mass market MMOs). All that can be derived from his statement was obvious before he said it. It might have crushed the dreams of those hoping they would make a game more similar to EvE, UO, AC or Darkfall with a major IP, but hardly surprising, or anything to get worked up about.
Let me just quote Eric Flannum, GW2's chief designer:
"As soon as one begins to compromise integrity for accessibility, you run a very real risk of watering down content and creating bland, unengaging activities."
and now I'll shuddup on this game and never look back.

Sorry, but WoW (in the design sense) is a Warhammer clone....so Warhammer can't really "clone" WoW. The only way to do anything like that is by setting up a UI that looks like it, which imo, isn't a bad thing. I've played ALOT of MMOs and the games that were the most easily accessible were the ones with UIs similar to WoW. Does that make those games "WoW clones"? No.
Some of you guys are blowing all of this way out of proportion. The game is in its infancy and to call it a WoW clone at this point is pretty retarded. Thanks for your time.

I'm sorry but this "huge" majority of which speak is simply inconsequential. Why should they fear a bunch of whiners who complain about the largest and most popular mmo in existence? For every one of them, there are a thousands of potential subsribers. Sounds like a pretty safe bet.
But on the upside, if you are a WoW fanatic and a WAR40k fan maybe you will have something new to do for a couple of weeks...
Is that Dejah Vu? Didn't Mythic try the exact same thing?
It sounds to me like they will screw over the IP a second time, what is GW thinking? And what do they mean by "Wow has 14 million players"? I thought Wow peaked at 13,4 1 1/2 years ago and have less now.
Well, in one perspective, it's hard to say that copying a lot of what works in WoW is a bad idea as that's exactly what WoW did with Everquest. The problem is, most developers simply copy and paste aspects of WoW into their game without expanding on the ideas, refining them, or putting their own spin on it.
The biggest problem, and I hate to beat a dead horse, isn't WAR40K's insistance on copying WoW, but it's insistance on only going with two factions. I say this because I have played WAR, and it's pretty commical what players do when their side starts loosing. They simply re-roll on the winning side and the cycle just gets worse and worse. Two factions work for WoW because, for one, the lore supports it, but most importantly, PvP isn't the main focus of the game. It has no real consequence outside of who wins and looses a battleground and is done for nothing more than fun, gear, and bragging rights. The only real PvP of consequence in WoW is done in Wintergrasp, which still isn't really worth server transfers or re-rolls if your side looses all the time.

Yeah, it went so great for Mythic.
You are missing the point here. Blizzard gives their fans what they want. But Warhammers fans expect their games to be treated like a Warhammer game, not a Blizzard game.
Warhammer have millions of fans who loves it, but making a game for the Wow players have so far always failed. The only right way to do a Warhammer MMO (or any other game based MMO) is by making the game for the fans of the original game.
Why pay a lot of money for an IP if you just are screwing it over and replacing it with Wow stuff? They would have higher chances of success if they made their own IP instead of destroying an existing that already is huge.

Well, Wow did copy EQ and became a huge success. However was that 6 years ago the mechanics have been basically the same since Meridian 59. The problem with that is the fact that time is running and remaking the same game over and over isn't working any more.
Not even Wow itself is as large as it once was and all games using the mechanics since then have either gotten a relative small playerbase or totally tanked.
You can't remake Meridian 59 another time and make a huge success, the next huge game will have to offer a different kind of gameplay. It has been done, it was fun and it is time to move on.
All that said, this doesn't mean that MMOs should go back to UO but they will have to offer a new experience or slowly die. Guildwars 2, World of darkness online and TERA are trying that and so is many others, probably also Blizzard themselves.
You can't remake the same game forever unless you are making "Championship manager".

wow what a shock, I wouldn't believe it unless they explicitly said it.
World of Warcraft is a proof that MMORPG quality should affect schedule/budget and not the other way around.
