Using this logic, I should stop playing basketball because there are playing like Kobe Bryant that would destroy me. Thanks OP.
You probably would stop playing basketball if you had to regularly share the court with players who were drastically better than you due to natural ability, training, or simply the amount of time they have to practice each day. The sports analogies don't work for me because the best players don't play with the semi-pros, much less with the amateurs. But in MMOs, we're all out there sharing one big playing field. I don't mind that, in fact, I like it that way, I'm just pointing out why the analogy won't fly.
So you're saying all the 20,000 people on your server have this uncanny natural ability? Again you're not understanding what the professional in pro-gamer means.
Professional means you make money from it. This means it's his job. Professional players won't be playing mmo's because there is no money to be made and hence no incentive. Do you think this guy was born like this or maybe he trains for it because money is a great incentive?
TLDR; Unless they start paying you to play mmorpg's no one is going to put the effort to get this good.
P.S. Professional players did not start out magically playing professionally. They played everyday people and slowly moved up the skill ladder. Are you saying everyone Kobe Bryant played prior to his professional career quit?
Professional level in a game, with all the practice and sometimes natural talent this implies, is not restricted to paid players. A fifteen year old with lightning reflexes and an entire summer to dedicate to her new favorite game is going to easily beat the guy with wife, kids, and a job who has an hour or two a day (at most) to play. Not that I'm complaining about this disparity, it does not bother me, it's simply the analogy that doesn't ring true.
Yes I could also face a 15 year basketball natural in the park tomorrow and get destroyed. This doesn't mean I'll stop playing basketball?
And how is my analogy invalid ?.... Oh yeah cause I might face this korean pro if I played WC3 on bnet .... news flash this guy would not bother playing on BNET, there are ICCUP servers for players like him. In fact these is where they practice. Same for WOW and their tournament servers.
Here's the analogy checklist:
both sports --- check
both professional players --- check
both players at the top of their field --- check
both players play in specific leagues (ICCUP/NBA) --- check
Chance I'll face any of those players ---- 0.0000000001% (made up statistic) ----- check
How was it invalid again?
Your analogy checklist is also invalid. It doesn't take years of practice, professional backing, and being more talented than 99.9999999999 percent of the population to dominate in pvp in any MMO that I know of. Also, calling MMOs a sport is pushing it, but I'll go with the definition, since pvp is a competition. I argue that the top field of players in an MMO is much broader than in sports like basketball, and therefore the chance you'll face off against one of these 'top field players' is much greater, than in real world sports, and this is why I think your analogy falls flat.
Here's a news flash: The guy in the video was playing a RTS not a mmorpg. The op stated that he would not play action mmorpg's because of guys like the OP (whose skills will not transfer to an mmorpg anyway)
Again you've not provided a reason to why the analogy is invalid other than 'Your analogy checklist is also invalid'.
You're only argument is:
'It doesn't take years of practice, professional backing, and being more talented than 99.9999999999 percent of the population to dominate in pvp in any MMO that I know of'
which
a) Makes no sense as it does take extensive practice to be good at something like arena's.
b) To be more talented than 99.9999999999% of the population, there would have to be 1,000,000,000,000 people in the planet, let alone playing the mmorpg
and
c) Has nothing to do with the analogy.
Again still trying to figure out how the analogy is invalid?

You're splitting hairs now merely for the sake of arguing. I explained exactly why I think it's invalid, and you may agree or disagree with me as it pleases you.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
There no perfect analogy. And a analogy it's not a argument, it's an way to explain a argument, make it easier to understand.
If you understood the point he was trying to make then the analogy didn't fail.
To some extent, you're correct. But an analogy also has to ring true to be effective, and for me, this one does not, for the reasons I gave. It's not a huge deal, I'm actually just whiling away the day to keep my mind off an agonizing wait, since my new computer should arrive today...at some point....*bites nails and stares at the clock*, and I enjoy a good debate of any kind, on just about any subject. Win or lose, against pros or amatuers, online or anywhere else, it's good fun.

I know that one... when you get fun? and in today's market is very hard to win
