When I started playing eve a number of years ago I had a blast and really enjoyed the game and I really appreciated the Empire aspect where I could go and chill out and read email and do other real life things while still advancing if a bit slowly.
Sadly, the developers and many of the players have taken an elitist attitude towards players that don't want to spend all of their time in low sec and are actively working to drive players out of high sec and play the game according to their set of rules. First this shows that the idea of sandbox in eve is pure myth unless by sandbox you mean you can play anyway you want as long as it is the way we want you to play and second driving players via negative methods simply doesn't work and creating more positive reasons for players to modify the way the play the game is obviously too much work for CCP to bother with.
With this latest round of Hulkageddon it simply makes me realize that my recent rejection of a CCP email asking me to return to the game was the right choice.
Don't take this negativity as me saying that the game is bad or that the players who are enjoying the game are wrong or silly to be enjoying it. It is quite simply that the game is evolving into something that is no longer enjoyable for me to play and while my departure means little to the eve universe it does make me sad that so many seem to derive pleasure in driving me and others away from the game.
Honestly, this is going on, because there isnt much to do in eve.
It's interesting that the game which arguably has the most things you can do, get this complaint so often. People must be too used to hand holding.
What things are you referring to exactly? fly to a rock and mine it, get a blueprint and make something, do pve mission or blow people up. That's it. The rest of the game is purely imagination which are what MUDS are based upon. I can sit here at my desk and imagine many things while on cnn.com, imagine that im part of the story im reading and say, man cnn is a great mmo, i was just in that earthquake, and i saw a bomb go off in building x, this is the best mmo in history, but truth is, Im just on a webpage . What people derive that eve is in thier minds, isnt the game. Things passed the physical, shouldn't give credit to the game itself.
Blowing people up is the funnest thing to do in Eve, and it will happen regardless. Hide your Hulk.
it does make me sad that so many seem to derive pleasure in driving me and others away from the game.
As long as immature males think with their dicks, they will enjoy being assholes. If they can't blow up defensless mining ships, they'll pull the wings off of flies and kick puppies instead.
So I guess the best time to start EVE would be when this ends and at least six months before it begins again ? . That seams to leave quite a small window for new players or are their places you can pretty much avoid being ganked untill you gain a foothold in the game ?
If not this seams to be quite prohibative . Not that I'm against pvp and I like the idea of EVE given it sounds a bit merciless but if it goes to the point it puts people off playing at a certain time each year then maybe its not such a good idea ?
I don't know a lot about EVE so I could be totally wrong in these assumptions if I am please illuminate me because I was thinking of giving it a try soon but now I'm thinking I will wait a few months untill this is over .

Why do I suddenly hear the Carebear theme song?
The fact that Eve allows such actions, but still has consequences, is one of the reasons it's so great.

Well that alone is as much as most other games out there.
Also trading, factional warfare, piracy, 0,0 warfare, planetary interaction, moon bases/POS, invention, exploration and I could continue for a long time not even naming player created events like the one in the article. While some of those may fall into the same generalized categories you mention, they are way too different to be considered near the same. It's fine that you don't like Eve, I didn't at first, but there's nothing imaginary about the features. I also get bored once in a while because I have nothing to do, but that's only when I dont take initiative to do something.
It seems more like it's either the concept of a sandbox you dont like, or the slow pace Eve is so notorious for.
Never seen so many foolish posts in one thread. Something happened to your brains that you can't reason, just blindly follow the other fools?
This is the dumbest thing in Eve yet. How do you think this is going to effect the economy? Huh? Since most of you can't think try a leap in prices because the basic commodity, minerals, is going up in price.
The dumbest thing in Eve is paying insurance to a ganker, most idiotic thing in a MMO that I know of.
Yeah, I don't like the macro miners either, but this dumb event effects them little, but the newer players with their low end retrievers are getting hurt bad.
To anyone that ganks a retriever, they should be ashamed, picking on someone most probably with little money and little experience in the game. That is just flat out being a low life bully.
I am just disgusted with the cowardly posts in this thread. You want to gank somoeone, come gank us experienced players, show me you have some guts to someone that fights back.
That's one of Eve's biggest problems, lots of cowards who can't stand a fair fight.
The dumbest thing, Ozmodan, is that you have no idea how Eve works.
Miners have next to no impact on the price of minerals. Not even hysteria and market speculation will even raise the price niveau significantly enough to counter the deflation happening since the insurance changes.
Also, people who can fly retrievers have spent enough time in Eve to know how it works.
I've been out mining in my little Iteron III with a single mining laser turret and haven't had a problem. I wouldn't have known Hulkageddon was on, had I not read this article. I knew it was coming, but didn't remember what the dates were.
The goal of the event is to kill and rake in as much ISK as possible. I highly doubt someone out in a low-tiered frigate in highsec mining veldspar or scordite has anything to worry about. I had more trouble with rookie-level NPC pirates than anything else.
Of course, this does explain the abnormal amounts of Hulks I've seen in highsec over the course of the day. Normally I see 2 or 3 out and about, but today, I saw at least a dozen. Kinda sucks for the noobs like me, since they can rape a field in no time. Ah well...
"You'll never win an argument with an idiot because he is too stupid to recognize his own defeat." ~Anonymous
If you don't belive the players how about beliving the developers?
Ah I couldn't open your link, but I think it a semantic argument probably, it clearly has permission from CCP. Actually, my main point is that it seems to herald the desire for theme park PvP content in EvE, and I think it a prelude to this type of content being officially patched into the game.
If that's really the case why bother with all the permissions to use CCP art and trademarks ...
Because any remotely professional fansite for a particular MMO will have that on the bottom of the site. When CMS started getting popular and any dipstick with a keyboard could create a site, disclaimers and copywriter notices started disappearing as there isn't a premade field for people to type that in and have it properly placed for them. However, I'm quite sure that you'll dismiss this too, as you are pretty firmly entrenched in your belief that tthe people that run the site are lying and that there's supa sekrit stuff going on behind closed doors between CCP and the Hulkageddon guys.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
This is where I disagree with you. An amateur fan site wouldn't bother and actually a lot of professional sites don't bother either. It looks like perhaps an Icelandic corporate lawyer has gotten involved and advised on legalities. Similarly the merchandise is making money out of EvE. Well, I just think there is hand to hand going on here as it provides EvE with fun content, an i am just betting CCP will patch things like this into the game to improve enjoyment .
If they were really after serious pew-pew action to wage war upon evil botters..... then they would head to the Drone Regions .....
where all the Macro-Ratting Bots live.
But wait ... Nooooooo teh Drone Regians are 0.0 space, thier too scared to go there, someone might hotdrop a Cap Fleet on them and thier KB would get a loss, unthinkable.
Illyssia you probably think the alliance wars that happen are also CCP sponsored events. You obviously don't understand Eve so you should stop posting before you make a bigger ass out of yourself.
As for this event I always thought it was lame. There isn't much challenge is fitting a crusier to suicide-gank a Hulk.
So I guess the best time to start EVE would be when this ends and at least six months before it begins again ? . That seams to leave quite a small window for new players or are their places you can pretty much avoid being ganked untill you gain a foothold in the game ?

Just because CCP has a hands-off approach to the game and allows certain actions to take place in the game does not equal their direct involvement in an event that takes place in the game.
You seem to have a psychological trait that screams "CONSPIRACY".
If you actually knew anything about the game, and the forums, you can see MANY events that take place formed by players. The well known corporation for beginners, Eve University, often has events for its members. Since they are created and "not endorsed in any way by CCP", but yet allowed in-game, does this mean they are secretly endorsed in the shadows like you imply, and will be "patched into the game"?
It is far from a Hulk but I went flying around doing some missions and stuff in my Retriever to see if I got blowwwwwwwed up but I didn't so far, hehe.
These kind of events put a bad taste in new player's mouths. It's as if you don't want this game to get bigger? Meh.
My thoughts exactly . I like the concept of EVE but things like this make me think the people that have populated the game for several years proberbly hold all the cards now and theres little room for new players .Isolated gankings fine but a whole organised fleet of gankers just puts me off even trying it . I'll leave it to the elitists .

So are there corps that are forming antigank fleets for this event? That would be the only thing that could make this event interesting imo.
Anyone knows?

The main targets of Hulkageddon are Hulks, ships a newbie won't be flying for a long time if at all.
If by then you haven't learned how to protect yourself it's your own fault tbh.
Why do I suddenly hear the Carebear theme song?
The fact that Eve allows such actions, but still has consequences, is one of the reasons it's so great.
When haven't miners been open targets in EVE? I guess making it a contest makes it *more* worthwhile?
Hmm, guess I better not fly my miner out of the hanger for awhile heh.

Exactly, they only fight when they are assured of a win.
