World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Class & Mastery System Update

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Blizzard has posted a one page synopsis of the changes coming to the Class & Mastery Systems once Cataclysm goes live. Without any specific detail with regard to each class/mastery, the article outlines Blizzard's vision as well as highlights 'The Rise of Specialization' and 'True Mastery'.

The active abilities unlocked with the initial talent tree selection are abilities that are core to the role being chosen. Our goal is to choose abilities that let the specializations come into their own much earlier than was possible when a specialization-defining talent had to be buried deep enough that other talent trees couldn’t access them. For example, having Lava Lash and Dual-Wield right away lets an Enhancement shaman feel like an Enhancement shaman. Other examples of abilities players can now get immediately by choosing the related talent specialization at level 10 include Mortal Strike, Bloodthirst, Shield Slam, Mutilate, Shadow Step, Thunderstorm, Earth Shield, Water Elemental, and Penance.

Head to the Cataclysm site for the full article.

this. sucks. in. the. most. suckish. way...

Next time just choose your mastery and forget about any talent trees to make it even MORE significant and cookie-cutter

...meh this is the last nail into the coffin for any... well the only thing that comes to my mind is real player...

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

But our focus groups told us that WoW NGE is more iconic and starwarsy than ever!  Admit it, you want to be a Tauren Jedi, not Uncle Owen the gnome moisture farmer!

Mmmm, well... Bear in mind that if you actually raid, depending on your class of course, you have about 5 discretionary points. The rest of them go into the same skills for everyone. I really don't see this changing much tbh.

  • VortanVortan Member Posts: 25

this is lame because like someone said before...the less choices you have to put talent points into other things, the less specialization you have...cookie cutter builds will be back in full force with this

I for one am kinda on the fence here with Cataclysm.Having left the game several months ago I dont know where I stand but at least I am going to get a good laugh out of all the complaining about the changes. I say if you are going to get the game get it and then complain after you have played the game with the changes  speculate all you want untill they go live but if you are going to do the whole " I quiting because..." garbage dont waste the worlds time. Having weathered the SWG NGE change and leaving due to the changes I find this scene looking all too familiar. If it even comes close to having the same impact on WOW that the NGE had on SWG it will be very interesting to watch this all unfold especialy with the current global economies state.Alas change comes, welcomed or not it will come and life goes on. Who knows maybe there will be a spike in sales of books and other slightly more conducive to selfdevelopement media and related item, not likely , but there is hope.

That's always been an issue for WoW, in reality the paucity of viable talent/skill options means you don't really have many options for the game long-term.

I am not sure why but Blizzard is on this dumbing everything down kick. In WOTLK it was the raids and dungeons in cat it's the gearing and stats used to min max your charter. While this might appeal to some of the casuals I think it might backfire on them. They must have some survey data that tells them things are to complicated I would like to know who is telling them this. I will admit that the number of stats that have been put of the gear in resent years was getting out of hand but who the hell was complaining about the # of chouses in the talent trees?

I would like to hear from someone that has some idea on what's driving this sense I am wondering about the reasons why blizzard is changing the talent trees.

It amazes me that people who leave the game still watch the forums on a subject of the game they "hate". Its like saying you are over your girlfriend and you always ask her friends who she is dating..or spy on her.

Get over your selves and leave the game for good. It is not like you are ever going to convince anyone to leave the game.

And last but not least...no one cares about your opinion, since you left the game anyhow...who cares about you.

Leave your EX-game to the ones that are enjoying it or playing it....

As far as the changes? It brings something new to a game that is several years old (but yet has a greater population then any active mmo). I for one am looking foward to the changes. To me one of the things I enjoy is fine tuning my character..and besides you will never get rid of cookie cutter specs. These changes are to bring a greater importance to your talent points..each point means more then it does now. The majority of current specs dont even spec to the 51 points needed for the last skill in a given tree any how.

These talent ideas do look sort of interesting, along with a lot of other things that I've seen and heard people talk about them adding to the game.

But I know what type of game WoW is.  It is a Raiding, game.  Which is totally cool, I'm just not really into that.  It would be nice if Blizzard would have some insight and make some PvP servers that raiding was not the thing, in fact they could even take all the raid dungeons out of the game.  But they never will.

I'll tell you a lost interest in World of Warcraft, when I found out just how much Grinding/Raiding was involved, and continued to be placed in the expansion packs.

Therefore, I quit playing the game because Raiding, and Grinding for Skills/Weapons/Armor/Crafting/Gold...is not really my play style.

I had the most fun playing WoW, from it's release, to about 6 months after it's release.   I enjoy'd the ease of leveling, the fun times that I had playing the 5 man dungeons with my buddies, the laughs we had on vent in World PvP.    The epic battles at Tauren Mill...

Then it would up being that I had to leave my best friends to try and get recruited to some guild that I did not know anyone in, just to be able to try to raid to get better gear.  Then  all the drama with all the guilds members fighting over DKP, and who had first dibs on gear, the guild break-ups...all because the grinding and raiding tempo of the game.

If for any reason WoW ever finds a way to entertain the Small Best Buddy Groups of PvP gamers like me and my buddies, as well as they currently entertain the raiders, it could be possible for us to return to the game.  However I very seriously doubt that will ever happen.

The game is a sick disgusting waste of ones life sitting at a computer 24-7 grinding for some virtual pixels.

I just want to log on, chop someone's head of, and them go to bed.  Is that to much to ask?

Just for an in depth look from a beta testers view. These guys are the ones most people copy on beating raids or fine tuning your character. http://www.tankspot.com

I can understand your point about people who have canceled the game and say they hate it. I for one dont hate it , I just got bored and due to the time I had to play the game I wasnt being a productive player in the guild so I left. I hope this doesnt fail for blizzard but only time will tell as it also will in determining if I return or not.

    The funny part about this....

Is they talk about giving players more choices. In fact cataclysm was supposed to be like a rebirth of choice for players.

How they gonnna get more choices blizzard? by taking them away so they have to choose less?

Somehow I imagine that equates to more choices by blizztard math.

BTW I LoL'd at the retards trolling the peopl who would "cry" about this change.  Fact in people like this are part of the reason why WoW sucks donkey nuts.

Lol sorry but Cookiecutter games are about as stupid as the people who think they are leet at WoW.

Being leet at WoW is like being the fastest retarded kid at the special olympics.

  • Haven2035Haven2035 Member Posts: 54

You might've won a giold medal....

    but you're still retarded.

WoW takes ZERO skill to play.. LEET, and UBER don't exist in WoW, only in your tiny minds.

  • dagravedagrave Member Posts: 9

It gives more choices based on the fact that if you spec a certain amount of points into a given tree you receive a bonus based on the tree that you are specialized in. So you dont have to hunt around in a tree to get damage mitigation per se'. You simply put in that tree 31 points and you will recieve the bonus(for example..if you put 31 points into a tanking tree you will recieve tanking bonuses.). Then you can dabble in the other trees to customize you character how you want it to be.

If that makes sense..I dunno, but that is what blizzard has said.

Ah, so I assume you've got your Lich King kill achievement? Or raided 40m Naxx PRE-BC? Just link me your armory, I'm sure I can identify your Naxx gear on your sixty, if he's still sixty, or I can look up your Lich King kill achievement.

    I'm free on Friday.

That fast retarded kid still gets a solid gold medal to hang around his neck. What do you get for bashing him?

Talk about complaining for complaining sake... any change blizzard makes the troll crawl out the woodwork to spout the usual rubbish.

Who did not put 80% of their talent points into 1 tree already, the 51pt talents where too good not too.  There's no dumbing down here.  As you have to spend 31pt in your chosen tree it means you can only explore the top 2 tiers of the other tree's this allows blizzard to put some realy good talents into the tree's beyond the 2nd teirs, they dont need to put the realy powerful stuff at the bottom of each tree resulting in the top being full of filler talents... as it is at the moment.

Dont forget when you pick your tree you get free skills unique to the tree, for example for hunter if you go MM you get aimshot... no other spec can get this.

It's a welcome change cus the talents tree's where just getting over grown with fluff and filler stuff, this will let blizzard concentrate on adding fun stuff and not filler stuff.

I agree..WoW has some of the hardest content in modern MMO's. Most people give up on the game before they can experience it. And they need to make it difficult, the characters are so much more powerful then they where in vanilla or BC. I can solo Strat and Scolo with my Disc priest...
