Since no end game exists in XIV as of this moment and prolly won't for at least a year, you should be more concerned with the journey and having fun...forget about the destination until you eventually get there!

Ok, if I word it like this: What classes are excluded from grinding groups in FF11 today?
I'm guessing that the FF14 classes will largely resemble the classes in FF11.

Since you don't have to remake characters if you find yourself a class that you don't enjoy/isn't invited as quickly as you would want, you can just level up a new class with the same character. It doesn't alleviate the time you invested leveling that particular class, but it's not as painful as rerolling in other games.
The classes and the way the game works is quite different from FFXI, since you can change weapons on the fly and change classes. Plus with crossing skills and benefits, it behooves you to mix and match, experimenting with other classes even if you don't stick with it.
Theres 2 classes that are always in demand. Like the other guy said its Tank or a Healer (either one of these is a safe choice). Healer is probably the number one class in terms of people wanting you for groups from lvl 1, to max level, to end-game. As for picking a DPS class its a flip of a coin, no one knows how they will end up.

it's actually a slightly meaningless question as SE changed the system from XI so you can go in any direction you want and change if you don't enjoy. I wouldn't worry about end-game either, more I would enjoy the launch game, because progression through that is the majority of the game to be had.

Some others have touched on this but I figured I'd reiterate it. The classes in FFXIV are very different to those of FFXI. The class system itself is also significantly different. You can now equip any skills you've learned to any other class you've switched to so any advancement you make in any class, even if you don't stick with it, will not be wasted. Essentially there likely won't be a single class that is seen as most useful, but rather certain skill combinations from across many different classes.
While I agree with many posters that probably certain skills will be desired, I hope it is not to the point that FFXI was with /nin. I did not enjoy nin job or have any desire to level it. Made it really difficult when just about every class I enjoyed was expected by everyone to be /nin.

I have a feeling that instead of /nin there will be "required" skills for certain classes. Not because they're actually required, but because the players will decide it's the best/only way to use X class.
Funny that you all brought this up, I was just thinking about it when I woke up this morning. Yeah I have issues, but I am eager for the game to come out! Anyways, I would have to agree with what most posted about the X spell/ability for y job, more than likely they will go this way. I am not so sure about the healer's though with there whole thing of you don't really need a healer going around in MMO's not sure how they would accomplish higher end/end game mechanics if there are no true healers.
The whole x ability for y job might make it easier to play any job, while I am sure that some LS will figure something out as to what that is, we wont need to worry about it for a little while, like some one said we might not see true end game for up to a year, probably sooner but that will be for those that rush through the game to get to the cap level in a matter of weeks.
For now dont worry so much about what you want to play, keep it in mind but wait until launch and then decide when you start leveling what you really want to do, try them all out after all you will be able to do that with out having to go make an alt.
I think allowing players to train all skills is going to add quite a bit of confusion to the grouping mechanics. Used to be you just needed to know what class and level a player was, and the assumption was he had the proper abilities/spells. (Of course then there was the gear question but that's for another thread.)
Now players are going to have to try and figure out who is the "best" healer, since many people will take some healing skils. Same for CC, DPS, Tanking, its going to be challenging (maybe even fun) to try and figure at a raw skill level who is the best and how might be a better healer due to natural talent even if they have a lower amount of ability trained.

That's basically Square-Enix for ya. They don't exactly hold our hands with these things.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Nobody knows what endgame will be like yet, and considering that you need skills from multiple disciplines in order to effectively create what we commonly refer to as "classes", I would focus on having fun while playing. Pretty much everybody is going to have to improve other disciplines once the playerbase starts to become familiar with what we are up against come endgame.
If you focus on having fun, then you will enjoy the game alot more. If you focus simply on what you think is going to be most effective for endgame, without any knowledge of what endgame is, you will turn the game into a grind.. and most likely a completely ineffective grind as I highly doubt you will be able to predict what you will need.

Which is actually good, in WoW you knew everything that was coming and you already had guides/video's of it all before you even got it, there was no guessing in WoW at all, which takes some of the fun out of it. So I am eager, eager to start in on it all to see what they have in store for us.
Why is everyone so mental over end game in MMO's? I am starting to think that everyone has forgotten that an MMORPG is supposed to be an evolving world with no real end to it. Here is an idea play a class that is enjoyable to you, it doesn't matter what anyone else wants you to do.
Maybe the person enjoy's end game stuff. To me the mentality kills it but hey that's my opinion since I do not see the big deal about end game, sure it is fun to do it and stuff but I don't get into it like others do.
As others have said, you won't enjoy FFXIV if you take the route of trying to pick which discipline will be needed end game. It is completely the wrong way to approach this game. That being said, I would start with a Miner. They will be in high demand for the entire game from the sound of it. They will be major suppliers for 3 of the 8 crafting disciplines.
That being said, and dropping the slight bit of sarcasm (only slight, what I said is completely true), there are now 20 jobs in FFXI. Only 12 were in the game from the start and of those only 6 were available until you hit lvl 30 in one. More important in this game, which is vastly different from FFXI (or at least it sounds that way), will be how you combine the skills of multiple disciplines, more than being a specific discipline. And for that, leveling them all will be necessary.
In other words, even if you take a discipline that isn't itself in demand at "endgame" (again, looking at "endgame" is a bad way to approach this game), you will have attained abilities that will be useful when playing other disciplines.
Well, I would definitely not rush main game and try to develop and explore what is there as I progress with my character. SE did tell us that there would be monsters and dungeons to look forward too, so I think WoW raiders need not worry too much about endgame.

Granted in FFXIV it appears you can focus on crafting and social aspects without bothering with combat if you're not interested in participating in 'end-game' content.

That's the appeal of this game to me, that there will be room to figure things out and less "must have this perfect mix" to win mentality.

with this game i feel that endgame requirments will more about abilites more than classes themselfs
because you can equip most other classes abilites
it will be more like need melee with xxx ability or caster with xxx spell and so on
my punches are as strong as kicks
If you end up with a character that is fun to play but not wanted in grouops its a design bug.
