Hey hey I heard it through the grapevine there may be an Assassin class planned, and it is magic oriented. If I had to take a stab at it I would guess it would be either an unlock like FFXI with a simple class quest, or I am leaning more towards a combination of leveling Pugilist and Thaumaturge. Thaum is dark/light magic and Pugilist is the closest to an assasin/ninja/thief so the combo makes sense to me. I really think they may be leaning towards a tactics style of unlocks with X and Y ranks of multiple classes.
I would guess:
Lancer + Archer = Samurai
Pugilist + Thaum = Assassin
Gladiator + Pugilist = Fencer
Gladiator + ??? = Sentinel
Marauder + Archer = Musketeer
Marauder + ??? = Enforcer
Thaum/Conjurer = Arcanist/Mystic some combo maybe 30-35 Con/15 Thaum for one and switched for the other.
Lancer + ??? = Flayer
Archer + Conjurer = Bard
Etc.
This is just speculation though. Who knows how it will go down.
Yeah I agree with you reading the skills descriptions for pugilist and thaum look like they may be a good combo but we will see. SE will almost certainly bring more classes out of the wood work with out too much delay so I say why worry I think we will be ok.

Holy crap ... that sounds cool.
Not only the magic oriented assassin but also the combination of 2 classes leading to a new one.

Considering that weapon = class I have a hard time seeing how you could combine two classes to create an entirely different one.
You can, however, create your own version of a class. Feel free to use healing abilities as a gladiator and call yourself a paladin. Everyone else will see you as a gladiator until you inform them of your 'class.'
Don't be too disappointed if we don't see a dedicated Thief/Assassin class. Keep in mind that one class already has Steal (Pugilist), another class has Flee (Archer - Quickstride), another class has Treasure Hunter (Blacksmith), and yet another class has Trick Attack (Lancer - Collusion) and an ability that only works against an unaware enemy (Lancer - Overrun). And it has been hinted at that many classes will have abilities that benefit from positioning yourself behind the enemy. That leaves very little in reserve to give to a class modeled after the FFXI Thief.

Yes, I know that now => weapon decides class
But I was referring to this quote:
"I really think they may be leaning towards a tactics style of unlocks with X and Y ranks of multiple classes."
So lvling 2 distinct classes towards a specific lvl would kindoff unlock a new class.
And after the unlock I would for example equip a dagger and then I'll be an assassin or whatever they'll call it.
This also would go for aother classes ofc, or am I interpreting this in the wrong way?

No no, not disappointed at all
Op was posted when I did not really grasp the concept of multiclassing, now I understand it better and know I can kindoff create my own assassin version.
The way im seeing it you level 4 classes to a certain level then pugilist to a certain level and you get all the nifty sin skills. who knows what the cool downs will look like but all in all might be the way to do things with all the classes.

Thanks Hyanmen - it does seem the system encourages experimentation without the threat of making too much of an initial error of choice - sounds fun!
Thanks for all the replies ... I will certainly take a stab at FFXIV.

So, if weapon = class then you may be able to obtain a short sword and use it if you have the correct skill combination to do so.
That would give you the special class designation, no?
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
