Sweet.

Freaking. Sweet.

This is the ENGINE that will be used in Space.  A very early release, created when TOR was first being worked on.  This is NOT INGAME FOOTAGE OF TOR SPACE COMBAT.

First, thank you to all of you who participated in our Comic-Con Reveal mission! While we didn't quite make the numbers, we definitely saw how excited the community is about this and how everyone came together. After all of that, there's no way we could hold back with our special reveal at Comic-Con!

If you’ve been following the news coming out of the Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ panel at Comic-Con International, you’ve heard the announcement that we will indeed have Space Combat as part of the TOR experience! But what does that mean? Space combat is an alternative gameplay experience to the primary game of storytelling, questing, and ground-based combat. In space combat, you fly your personal ship to various “hot spots” on your galaxy map. From there, you will blast your way through asteroid fields, enemy fighters, frigates, destroyers, and a variety of other obstacles that will evoke memories of some of the great Star Wars™ space battles.

I'm pleasantly surprised.  I'm sure this won't deter the haters...after all they still insist this is a highly instanced single player game.

I am almost 100% percent sure that it will be an instanced mini game.

Your ship is a travel hub that carries you from planet to planet. Space combat in asteroids or evil guys space station will be instanced combat.  Don't expect anything like  EVE. Most likely it will be star trek online instanced mission.

Then again I hope i am wrong and u can customize your ship, explore space, build space stations and farm asteroids on top of all the ground combat and exploration

Cool. I hate space, but still cool.

Is it supposed to be integrated into normal gameplay or is it going to be something to do for kicks?

If you're expecting EVE Online, then you can forget it.

Spaceship customisation has been confirmed though.

Wait, some people actually expected a Star Wars game (that had already announced the inclusion of player ships) to NOT feature space combat?

    Lol.

As much as I like to hear this, it sounds a little overly ambitious.  BW have a lot to deal with concerning the "ground based" part of the game, let alone a space-based side as well before launch.

    Which infers a few possibilities:

    1. The development of the "ground based" part of the game maybe, in BW's opinion, further along than we anticipated.  Thus allowing them to divert crucial resources to developing the space-based part of the game.

    2. The space based part of the game won't be that big of a focus, regardless of what this announcement implies and therefore will not take up much in terms of resources for development.  People will be automatically thinking right now that this will be a TOR version of JTL, that may not be the case.

    3. BW may be "spreading themselves too thin" with regards to resource allocation, and thus they risk the chance that the game will end up only partially launch-ready in both the ground-based and space-based areas.  Personally, if it was indeed a matter of deciding where to divert resources, I would rather ensure a 100% launch ready ground-based game than a 50/50 launch ready ground and space based game.

I doubt we will see Mining asteroids or people using materials from said asteroids to create space stations.  What I expect, is you get a small fighter (Think Xwing or Tie Figter), and go to certain areas.  These areas are either filled with NPCs, enemy players, or both.  I would expect to see huge, huge areas you can visit to, but I don't expect that you can fly non stop (and super slowly) from one spot to the next, to everywhere.  I expect you can go to lightspeed to travel around to each area.

If you check out the video I posted, It will most likely be third person/first person in the ship.

It would be sad if each spot could only hold "10" people like STO did.  But from what we have heard about the size of the ground game, I doubt that.

You are much more optimistc than I am.  Im sure the fringe element will find something to bitch about. Be it a threat to their current beloved game or not enough like one they recall with such affection from the past. Misery does love company and they seem to gather to share their angst, be it welcome or not.

WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.

All of that is theoretically possible, I agree. But they need (in my opinion) something other than OMG Voice Overs! to make this game distinct from the bajillion other on-the-rails questfests, and this seems to me to be doing that. Plus, I imagine it could really tie well with smuggling in a game with a Smuggler class, though I grant that's more of a selfish concern of mine than anything related to overall playability.

Based upon the comment in red above I think that it'll be a small part, certainly not as large as the planets with their exploration, combat and questing.
