This means SW:TOR is now 2 GAMES IN ONE! It is now a MMO version of KOTOR AND a space sim wrapped into one delicious bundle.
The only problem is that Bioware has never made a space-fighting sim before. Will their inexperience be their downfall in this category? Or will they prove themselves to be able to work out of their element?
Also, if this game has space combat, it might be the EVE-killer as well as ALREADY being the WoW-killer.
They are already out of their element with this game, it's one big new adventure for them.

Not sure a space sim is really THAT hard. X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter is still a great game even today and it isn't like there has been a whole lot going on in the genre since then.
Oh so true, not to mention the fact that Bioware never making a space sim doesn't exactly mean those who are building the game have never designed one.

Yes, let us not forget that the BW team has hired people from other MMO's much like alot of games have done, they probably have a seperate team working on space. People that have probably done space games in the past. I was told somewhere one of the guys in charge of JTL is also working on SWTOR space. I have no doubt in my mind that they will make sure that this is polished and doesn't feel just like all the other space games out there. I think they will add their own flavor to the game.
I was on the edge before, but wow. I still would prefer if it was less linear, but i gotta give it a shot now.
Less linear? What do you mean by that? The only way it is linear, that I can think of, is that you can't take out the Emperor 1 on 1 from the get-go (e.g. harder challenges require leveling up...well, gearing will probably be annoying). I have a feeling you might mean something else though.
As much as I like to hear this, it sounds a little overly ambitious. BW have a lot to deal with concerning the "ground based" part of the game, let alone a space-based side as well before launch.
Which infers a few possibilities:
The development of the "ground based" part of the game maybe, in BW's opinion, further along than we anticipated. Thus allowing them to divert crucial resources to developing the space-based part of the game.
The space based part of the game won't be that big of a focus, regardless of what this announcement implies and therefore will not take up much in terms of resources for development. People will be automatically thinking right now that this will be a TOR version of JTL, that may not be the case.
BW may be "spreading themselves too thin" with regards to resource allocation, and thus they risk the chance that the game will end up only partially launch-ready in both the ground-based and space-based areas. Personally, if it was indeed a matter of deciding where to divert resources, I would rather ensure a 100% launch ready ground-based game than a 50/50 launch ready ground and space based game.
I imagine what happened is one of the following:
The marketing dept (who would currently be in the "focus group" phase of market research) wrote a report to the Executive Producer of the project that space combat is a feature that would gain X customers for every Y dollars spent. And the presence of such a feature on the box could sell Z more copies. In a high level management meeting, they made the decision to green-light exploration of a space combat feature, and it's currently being prototyped and explored on some internal data fork. But the System's Designers haven't yet figured out how to integrate into the core progression mechanics.
The CEO, some investor, whomever (that sits above the project lead) said "wtf, this is Star Wars. We need space combat" and the team reluctantly
acquiesced. Even though it's not part of the original vision for the project, it's a feature that needs to be there to fulfill an external directive. So either they'll do their best to integrate with the existing game, or half-ass it so it's technically "there."
Has there been anymore news on more details about space combat? I recall they'd drop word about it in August. Space combat is big for me and could possibly seal the deal if they do it right.

Meh it looks more like Battleground/Warzones in space. Hardly like space travel at all when they say Hotspots one tends to think... OH so Zoned combat areas, so their just doing Minigames. Right got it.

Are you going to keep trolling away, saying the same things over and over and over and over again while you keep trashing SW:TOR just because you hate the game even if it isn't out yet?
Wait for the PC Gamer to arrive in the course of this month, and you can learn automatically more details about what they mean with space combat, instead of drawing the worst conclusions that can be made at this moment.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

Whos Trolling They said it will be Zoned not me. If it's going to be Zoned areas it's going to be mini games, sorry but thats the way it is. You won't be Han Solo freely roaming the Galaxy you will Que up your ship to go to Such and Such BG area 6 and jump in with 20 to 60 other people, kill each other for a few minutes and thats going to be that. Dont get mad and throw a tantrum because I pointed out the obvious.
EVE online space combat has nothing to fear I am afraid.

They might as well go all the way.

100,000,000 dollars
I'm quite positive they have the resources to flesh out good ground play AND space play.

Guys! I'm hopelessly lost in a mountain of mole hills! Them damn moles!
Hopefully this is a nice little bone they are tossing out that will be fleshed out in some later expansion of the game.
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
