I like how the game is a stop forward in some ways, but a step behind in some ways as well.
I know its beta ATM but look at Aion, its been promised but still isn't out yet. Ruins the emersion Doesn't mean I wont still pick up the game but still. I saw an interview with Hiromichi Tanaka (FF14 lead developer of some sort) and he admits to not having played any other game since FF11 since hes too busy working on FF14. Now I know that's good in some ways, but it's bad in other ways too. You need to be playing some of the other MMORPGs out there to see where the ones that don't tend to place more boundaries within the game such as no swimming land versus the games do have these boundaries. Take a look at Aion. You can't swim. Its been complained about countless times by many of the players and its a feature they are going to bring in a later patch since its been demanded by the players. Now if any of these devs (not saying all of them haven't played other MMORPG games like Tanaka here) had played some other MMORPGs to see how well they fair to the competition.
Let me put it this way. The put SO MUCH WATER in these damn games. Yet you canno't go into the water. Just like you can't jump. I consider these step behinds despite it being a step forward in graphics/storytelling and what not. Okay I understand that the don't bother implimenting it becuase it would be useless feature. Yet the games have implimented it, had devs that took the time to give players a reason to explore the waters along with everything else. Examples include Age of Conan or World of Warcraft. Guild Wars 2 will have it and for those that have seen the trailers know that theres actually reasons to explore the waters and Aion will also impliment it later becuase players wanted it. So let's say they dismissed the idea earlier on in development and still haven't looked back to reconsider. I am 100% sure that they will have to go back and reconsider at some point after launch of game. I know, without any doubt, that players are going to want it after launch. The devs will see this and be like "Oh we didn't realize how much players want no boundaries in their MMO I guess we'll impliment it later"
...
Im just hoping that they start considering it sooner rather than later becuase its going to be asked for, maybe by not all of you but, a good majority of NA players are going to make : ( face once they approach those shores and stop dead (YOU CANNOT SWIM SIR, GOOD DAY). Get on the ball with this SE, it's going to be demanded sooner or later.

i think its good he hasnt played any other games he wotn be copying them. like all the WoW clones
The great part about SE is that they are comfortable in their game design decisions. You don't like the fact that you can't swim or jump? Get over it. They aren't going to lose any sleep over your $12.99 / month. SE designs games how they want, and they create better games because of it. The current state of FFXIV is that swimming and jumping are not needed.
FFXI never had swimming and jumping, yet has/had a very loyal customer base. It's just not that important in a game like this.
Like I said, I think that it's a good thing he hasn't played any other games. Keeps FF14 more original. The game is very superb in many ways and I will be picking it up. But at the same time. I feel that the fact that he hasn't is also bad in some ways. But, if he is aware of what's out there and what's going to be out there soon (Guild Wars 2 awesome swimming implimentation, Aion's as well, existing top AAA MMOs, and the fact that theres a demand for less boundaries in general when it comes to any MMO regardless) then none of that is any indication or influence on these devs minds????
I think the only way FFXIV would incorporate swimming would be if they did something similar to Aion. There would need to be a good reason (underwater zone) for such an implementation. Will we see it in the future? Possibly. But not on launch day.
I do not understand why people think they should implement this when there is nothing out in the water except more water... if it is not in game it normally means there is nothing you can go to in the water, no under water place for you to go, no island that has some mobs for you to fight. So what would be the point of swiming when they did not implement water mobs or places you can not get to by walking to said places? And the whole jumping thing, if they implemented what they should do is have a percent that you might break a leg or something, what if you land wrong and die? Same for swiming if you go out there and get tired then you could drown and die. I don't know what to tell you, they did not need this implemented so they worked everything around it so that they did not need to have you swim or jump to get to where you need to go, if you jump in RL from even a 2 foot tall object you could land wrong and sprain your ankle or something, unless they are going to go all out they should not implement it.
Rofl I like your idea of having a chance to break your ankle on jumping. All the ADD jump monkeys would be walking around with crutches and a cast on their leg.
While it may be a good thing when it comes to staying on course with his vision, it also leads to stagnation. If you completely close yourself off then you have a great game 5 years past it's time.
You don't have to copy other games to learn from them.
if he did, then he'll lose his magical touch which making FF ( XI / XIV ) unique
The point is its just rediculous in a game nowadays for you not to be able to jump or swim. Its about immersion. Whether it has any purpose or not, it feels nice when you have full control of your character. And how does it kill immersion? Are you serious? Hmm i wonder how being rooted to the ground 24/7 and running smack into an invisible wall whenever you hit water could kill immersion...
no final fantasy game has swiming or jumping get that threw your head the ff mmos are Fianl fantasy games FIRST and MMOS second.
if you dont like it go play all the other mmos that let you jump like a damn monkey. in ffxi your eally didnt hit a wall you could stillw lak in the water that you could get to but must water was below where you could wlak so you just get stuck on the edges instead.
like this i guess 7--- top of the 7 is the ground the middle is the water
in the dunes there was a way to get itnot he water and go around the cliff tot he other side while you was under water

Theres a situation where jumping could've been useful. She couldn't get back up to fight the Dodo on the same level plane. I am mostly focusing on swimming here as being a more major behind the times sorta boundary for a AAA new gen MMO but I guess jumping could be just as big as well. If your traveling on hilly terrain, there will be small cliffs here and there. You can run to the edge of them but cannot simly hop up. You gotta run your little arse around until you find a way back up. Close to every other triple A MMO to date allows you to navigate your own character in the most basic ways - run, swim, jump, and in some cases(Aion) even fly. This wont apply to just small cliffs but fences or many other things that the player could simply hop over in other games instead of taking extra time to find ways around everything. Trust me you'll be running or riding your chocobo to that 1 ft high cliff and press your spacebars thinking it can make the simplest hop onto it, but it cant.... Why? I don't know Square Enix says its uselss. RIght.... With 8 years into development, you'd think they coulda had the time. Developers shouldn't be asking themselves "why" but "why not"... That's how you make greater games.

in most cases thats how the water was you couldnt even get to it to hit a invise wall. dunes was the only exception
how is it behind when itss a design choice.
It's never made sense to me that my full plate warrior, with a full shield and sword, can jump into the ocean and cruise around. Same with jumping over things.
What if you're a mage?
I dont know why people keep bringing this old argument over and over , a game is like it is, with or without jump/swim.This wont make the game better nor worse. It can still be as inmersive w-o any of those.
The developers decided not to make the character jump nor swim so anythin we can argue here why or why not means nothin at all.If a game should have jump and swim in order for you to play it then dont play it and move on. It wont break the game , and/or make it any less fun or inmersive.I played aion for a while that you can move freely , and i admit it was a lot of fun . But guess what, it got old really fast.
Of course we all would like a game were you can do anythin you can irl . But we saw how far realism can take us like on Mortal Online, not very far. This thread should be somethin like "can you swim/jump"- "no".
You can be sarcastic about it, but look at the character in your own LotR sig. He's got armor and he can jump and swim in that game - a AAA mmo game. Now lets say they decided to release a new patch of LoTR online that would keep the enviorments the same with all of those rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water except take away the ability to swim in them for that game no matter how heavy or little armor your charcater is wearing. Plus you cannot jump after patch as well. Would that not be a step back in standard MMO game design?
These things just show that SE believes jumping, swimming, or other standard MMO character control potential is overrated according to them hence limiting the ways your character can explore/navigate the terrain. Please tell me, please explain why it isn't a step back. GIve me one good reason. If I were working at SE, I would be asking "why not" instead of "why" to game design choices like giving players more control over their character...
some people will defend anything.
probably thinks G W Bush was a christian too
To the caterpillar it is the end of the world, to the master, it is a butterfly.
can the antichrist be a christian?
What if you're a mage?
I neither jump nor swim irl, so I'm cool with it.
Tanaka itself said ( the guy behind FFXIV) that there is no need for jumpin in the game at all, the game dont need jump in order to progress. So is no point to add the ability to jump than to anoy everyone around .Is the devs decision to focus on other aspects of the game .You can like it or not but it really doesnt make a big diference. The game is inmersive w-o being able to jump..I could say other reasons but i would just be repeating myself from my other post.
Im not defending anythin, all im saying is you people complain to much.I played the game , i like it, i enjoyed it and i had fun i didnt had on a MMO since i started playing EQ ages ago.Inmersion like games so "realistic" like mortal online and with such freedom of movement like aion could never achive. Its indeed to bad you cant jump,,,,, but who the f***** cares.
Leave G.W. out of this or me and you will have words!
Just kidding, I understand your issue with the small stuff like a little hill but still does not break the game for me, I will go around fancy that .
If they implemented where you could break a leg or something that would make it more real to me, I dont jump I am a big guy and I dont swim for hours on end. Can I jump sure, but not jumping does not break the immersion in real life, not swiming does not break my immersion in real life either, I do not jump on top of a rock I normally go around it, now if they implemented climbing onto stuff it would make way more sense then the jump mechanic you can't do without.
i think he saying jump and swiming he doesnt care about
Your just lazy then. Go swim some more. Trust me in RL when you get to the pool or beach, no matter how heavy your chothes are, you will be able to go into that body of water. You wont get stopped by a invisible wall. If you did, then it would ruin your sense of real life. The devs are creating boundaries, something you want to steer away from in your game depending on the purpose. Let's take a look at Aion.
The devs for Aion told themselves that during development - leaving swimming out - standard feature present in most other triple AAA MMO before it - plus jumping - WoW, EQ, AoC, LotR, D&D. Aion players wanted it so devs started work on it. (coulda started sooner). Devs need to ask themselves "why not" instead of "why" to implementing more control aka good design choices. They put so many bodies of water or things you should be able to jump over yet your not allowed to swim or jump lol.
