The community. It's not there. I'm not talking about forums, guides, population, etc. No I'm talking about people actually knowing each other in the game.
I miss having enemies. Those guilds and people that you just hate and want to do everything possible to defeat them. In swg, we loved nothing more than raiding another guild's city and clone camping them for a night. It was a constant struggle between us and them. There was meta-gaming, flame wars, propaganda, etc. It was just plain fun. It felt like a real enemy in the real world.
Games now you can't even talk to the other faction in game. There are no player cities, there rarely is open world pvp, there is no sandbox. It doesn't feel like a world. It feels like a game, a souless game.
I realized this while playing wow today. I was in a battleground and was killing people, but I felt no sense of accomplishment. Nothing. In SWG I could spend 20 minutes fighting one person who I'd had a bad relationship with for months and after I killed them it felt like so much more of an accomplishment than if I had killed some no name from a different server who I'd never even talked to.
I really hope some big budget games go back to the virtual world idea. Grinding gear and points is completely boring. I want to make friends and enemies and have an actual impact on the world.

wow really screwed up with x-server battlegrounds. Sure it makes queue times faster but once they put them in place i stopped seeing familiar faces. Used to have alot of rivalries with certain alliance players and you'd go out of your way to smack them down. Now it's just faceless dude from server X and i could care less.
I agree with your point that the community in games isn't the same anymore but for a whole lot of other reasons as well. MMO's have changed alot and they just aren't what they used to be anymore.
I know what you mean. Playing WoW now, I don't even really talk to anybody... Which is horrible, because that's pretty much the point of online games. But the truth is I just don't really feel much NEED to, mainly because grouping is done through an automated in game mechanic (where nobody even really talks, mind you), and then when the fun is over the group is disbanded you in all probability you'll never see them again. Tragic, really.
When you start raiding or doing arena in wow, you'll actually have some kind of communites but it's really small.
I understand why everyone's complain is. I'm playing Fallen Earth now, and I can only play 1 hours a day. Because all I do is grind single player quests. It's basically a single player game for me so far. I havn't reach endgame so I can't comment if there's much comunity or co-op game later.

It's really a slice of time kind of thing. That first year of UO, EQ, WoW we all made so many friends and there was a real sense of community. Many people involved in the community following the game before it comes out for years. Now 5 years later after WoW has been released people are so spread out, nothing else has really blown anyone's skirt up, and everyone has fallen into this malaise. Something new that doesn't die is exactly the shot in the arm we need.
Remember after UO burst on the seen we were promised mmorpgs further than the eye could see. The possibilities were infinite and so exciting. So many were in development and sadly 90% of them didn't even make it past the webpage stage
I agree, i get bored of games alot because community just sucks. i want to get into a tight knit group to ply a game instead poeople spam out their guilds just to be large. i miss back when i was in my first guild in endless ages. it was tight knit, and it was the best thing about the game! but now no one is like that anymore.
Yeah, those days seem to be long gone. I remember getting invited to a guild and actually doing stuff with them. Nowadays unless you are in a raiding guild, everyone pretty much just does thier own thing. Single player games with a built in chat room. And I feel partially responsible as I have gotten older and have changed in many ways. It was easier to make friends and enemies when you and the majority of people were online for 6 hours a day or more at a time.

I know exactly what you mean. I remember playing SWG and felt I was a part of something bigger. Something I help create. The community back then felt pure. The the whiners came and forced the developers to change the game. Games are just too Theme Park, and point/gear (whose the best) oriented then community supporting nowadays.
I agree with this post, I remember ganking people at black rock mountain in WoW and then meeting them in a WSG those were definitely the best times, I could spent 4 - 5 hours ganking people in either Black rock mountain or Tarren mill, I even had nemesis, now days you get ganked, you run back to your body, get on your flying mount and gg.
I don't agree with alot of people on this website, hardly any in fact, but this post is exactly how I feel about today's MMORPGs. World of Warcraft was doing alright with battlegrounds until the BATTLEGROUP update. Before that you were seperated from the game world and pvping in an instance but you got to know everybody within your server still and also had enemies within it.
Darkfall gave me a good feeling of warring guilds and politics and an in-game world, and that's the best I've found from any game of the past few years... unfortunately the game just became too time consuming with the drive to constantly be better for pvp and in my slowly more busying life I no longer can find the time to play it consistantly.

There is no community in mmos anymore. I have had more player interaction in non mmos such as Borderlands and Starcraft 2.
'Conveinence' is the exact word that has turned most of these games from interesting and enjoyable virtual worlds or sandboxes into casual and popular-friendly themepark games. It's not that there is no place for both kind of game, it just that developers now favor the new formula because it makes big $$'s with the no-brainer gamers of this new generation.

i know its illegal and what not but the closest thing on an mmorpg where i have recently felt a community is a private server on wow, because no matter on what level people are and where they are they help you and you always have a team going to do raids and things and ya lol
Well i know what ya mean i had that same thing before playing WOW but when i just started a new character on a non pvp server i got in a guild that pretty much did just that. i know most eastern mmo players love pvp heavy playing( not my thing) but that is were the least actual group / guild play goes on mostly there its just who gets stronger
my guess would be if your on a pvp server and dont mind starting a new character try non pvp servers, always seems to me stronger focus on game envronment and less on solo pvping

maybe talking on forums on mmorpg.com can return us to that community sense, i know its not just us few and that there must be thousands more people who feel the same and wiill want to have the 'atmoshpere' back into the mmorpg world
I know what you mean Sab, I will not even play an mmo that determines my enemies/ allies. I will not play an mmo that has chat restrictions. No, those games become coasters if I ever even accidently buy them.
I flame wars, guild bounties, the actual player competition, not some predetermined " planned" rivalry. We can make our own rivalry, and In some games we still do. This is not something developers should determine, players do this well on their own.
All of your problems lie in the fact that you put some stupid limitations as to why you won't try a game. "If there's no X, if there's Y, I won't play".
You don't know what you want. You can make all the lists about your "perfect" MMO's but that's still not what you REALLY want.
Developers job is to show you what it is.
i agree that most MMO's this day's have very little community. from all of the reason games ive played its just been a solo game with guild, trading , and mailing systems. you just saw faceless nobodies killing the monster you needed to kill. but i disagree with the comment of WoW having no cumunity. im not a dedicated player but every couple of months when i log in, i see people actually knowing each other in the server. guilds clasing in the free for all arena. hell even the rated arena keeps things pretty tight knit.
I disagree. We know what we want, and some developers actually take the time to use that information to make better games. Why Don;t you just ask Arena Net about that. They had us fill out surveys and they used that information to make Guild wars2. Many of us have played a great variety of games, and make educated decisions based on that experience.
It is all about supply and demand. It is the developers job to suppy us with a game that we demand. Whoever gets there first and does it the best wins our money. That is how you become successful. LOL
The one plus to Vanguard's smaller community is that I do see familiar names and faces in my travel and there are a lot of helpful folks.
Most of the time it's not a game's features that turn me off, I hate F2P games and I hate anime games and those are really dominating right now. Most of the P2P games that I could be interested in have all these annoying things that drive me away also. Given I have not tried them all..

It isn;t that a game is F2p that makes it bad. What makes it bad is it really isn't f2p. That is misconception. If a game has a cash shop and sells items that you need to compete- it is NOT really F2P. If you buy the box and have no monthly fee, it is Buy to play, not Free to play. If the game has one area that is free and an area that has a membership, the game is not really F2P.
The only games that are really F2P are those spammed by ads, and are supported entirely by advertisement. Those to me are the only games you can even consider being truly F2P.
I too deteset the anime style, and enjoy western style graphix, like those of Guild wars1, they did an excellent job with those, can;t wait to see what they did with Guild wars2. So far everything I have seen looks really good.
Yeah sorry, I worded it improperly. It's not 'F2P' that I hate, it's the modern type of F2P model where they lure you in with the promise if a free game and then shove additional costs down your throat at end-game that cost you more than a subscription fee. I'd honestly rather pay a generous subscription fee than have to navigate through annoying website and item malls each week.
As much as people despise the game I think that Runescape is a perfect example of a fair F2P/P2P model that doesn't turn off either playerbase.

It's just not what you really enjoy 99% of the time.
Just like people who think if they just had lots of money they'd be happy. Or a new car. Or if their life was just a bit better they'd be satisfied.
They think they know what they want. But only when you get it, you can realize you were wrong all this time.
We'll see how those "better games" end up.
