I had hoped crafting would actually be more like combat...in a sense. Problems occur during the creation process and you have to use your crafting 'skills' to overcome/fix the problem.
I can't fully tell what is happening here, crafting wise (not speaking of harvesting), but it reminds me of the crafting interface in 'Star Ocean: Til the End of Time', an earlier SE rpg title. Crafting kind of occurred in 'layers' or waves too.

it looks like they already made tedious things in the game about ten times more tedious to preform....great job....
Yep, looks boring as hell to me. And I love harvesting/crafting in most mmos.
-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.- -And on the 8th day, man created God.-
gathering was never really a fun part in an mmo, and they make it look even MORE boring and complicated. The crafting looks really boring also, and somewhat frustrating. Looks like it will take forever to gather with this system.

Then don't craft? If you don't like it already then why do you care? From someone who loves crafting and gathering and is bored out of my mind in almost every MMO out there I can say that this system is amazing. Some people spend their entire time playing gathering and crafting and it is like a full game supporting this. The crafting is very interdependant and requires teamwork. Crafters and gatherers are their own class and there will likely be crafting parties where people make different parts to complete items.
There is a company system in game for groups of merchants, and it is actually extremely fun. Unlike going to a node and clicking and waiting it is very engaging. This is great for people who like crafting and harvesting.
You'll find the system takes patience. Which is a good thing because it discourages taking professions if you aren't serious about them. It'll be a good thing for the economy.
Someday we'll all look back on the age of computers - and lol.
Goodness, so many people just want everything fast and with little effort. No wonder the world is going the way it is. Look, effort earns reward, be that in game or in life. If a game is actually making you put forth an effort to earn something and you don't care for that, find a new game. I applaud SE for this decision, just one more thing to make me keep defending this title.
And the truth comes out.. Apparantly the 'hard cores' who are bashing this game for being behind the times, really don't want hard core, or anything different than what they had before.. So what kind of gathering/crafting do you want, click and harvest + click and craft.. Hmm.. I have the PERFECT game for the 'Hardcore' player, it's called World of Warcraft.

No, I just prefer that it be fun. Complicated is more than fine.
Ryzom has a more complicated system of harvesting than what is shown in that FFXIV video. You actually have to hunt down the resources in Ryzom, there's no little "glowy" or "shiny light" to tell you where to dig outside of the newbie island. You use range meters to zero in on the resource, you use different skills to find multiple resource spots, higher grade resources, etc. Then you have to constantly use different skills while harvesting to make sure the spot doesn't dry up/blow up before you even get anything. Much more complicated and involved than anything shown for FFXIV harvesting.
The difference? Ryzom doesn't make it boring.
-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.- -And on the 8th day, man created God.-
Yeah... and you guys really think that shoving your 4 or 5 year old unchanged pickaxe in circles over your head, mining across every extraction points pointed on your map and mini map to be sure you won't miss it, while running or flying from one to one, is the most realistic, "normal" and simulated way to really gather that kind of things ?
I can't blame SE trying to "simulate" the strength you put in your pickaxe or hatchet, the angle, the amount of rock/wood penetrated by each swing with it and making a mini game from that.
Also, yeah there are "passive" skills u get every "x" levels of gathering or crafting job to help you get things faster, help you gather better quality materials, and also, doubles, and triples the productivity, the speed, and quality of items you can make.
Of course you can't get those "abilities" at level one of the job you have to "level" it.

In FFXIV the "glowing" or "shiny light" only appears if you are at approximatively 25 meters of the extraction point, and if it's behind a rock, a wall, or hidden by the background, you can't see it, it doesn't glow "out" through the element of background, and they "respawn" at different places on the map, maybe it wasn't shown on those video, but u have to use skills like "searching the ground" or "knowledge of the land" to know the approximative position of the gathering points on the map and u still have to use another skill when you are getting close to be more detailed and precise about the location.
It's not given to you by the "shiny" thing, u can't see it from really far, you have to be already close enough to be able to see it, and the maps are huge.
gathering was never really a fun part in an mmo, and they make it look even MORE boring and complicated. The crafting looks really boring also, and somewhat frustrating. Looks like it will take forever to gather with this system.
This also destroys bots.
Eh... I don't think it's going to destroy bots.
The system is repetitive enough to where they'll be able to script it by reading the game's memory, like they do with Fishing in XI. I've already witnessed what looked like a couple "test runs" for a RMT hack/script while I was doing a leve one day.
Went up to a node for a mining leve, started mining. Seconds later, two characters appear out of nowhere... identical Elezen with nonsense names. They wielded their mining picks and stood there for about 30 seconds, not mining, before putting them away. You'd think a normal player - at least one out of two of them for sure - would realize more quickly they can't mine there and move on. These two didn't. They stood there, pick-axes out.
After about 30 seconds, they put their picks away and both vanished again seconds later. When I went to the next mining node for the leve, they appeared again.. both at the same time.. did the same thing.. and then vanished again.
Definitely something fishy going on. I submitted a report to SE about it.
I'm counting on SE being as aggressive on botters/hackers out of the gate as they became in XI. They'll never be rid of them, but they'll certainly mitigate the problem.
"If you just step away for a sec you will clearly see all the pot holes in the road, and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
That's true. Unless they pair it with an aggressive bot-hunting system (which they obviously will, since they know what they're doing), this gathering system alone won't stop bots. It'll take more time and effort to develop them compared to games with one keypress or click to harvest. But it's not something that would be too difficult. On the other hand, it should hopefully destroy any chance of simple amateur macroing with something like a G15 keyboard.

Can you really say that it'll take forever? Consider the fact that everyone will be gathering at the same speed, so there will be fewer materials circulating and thus the selling price of these gathered materials (and the items they're made from) will be higher. If it takes about an hour to gather 300 logs in WoW (just a guess, since I don't play it) and it takes an hour to gather 50 logs in FFXIV, you will be able to create just as much with those 50 logs because they will be valuable... so what you make out of them will also be very valuable.

Ryzom - the best gathering system bar none
though this doesn't seem as tedious as the video makes out from reading further comments - won't be purchasing on day one but will definitely be checking forums after release and see how it goes (the big deal for me so far is the fail in collision detection)

Obviously those who say this sucks never played final fantasy 11. They are stuck in the 'everything must be easy as hell like wow' mode.

On the video I'm not sure if I showed it but while gathering I gained a passive trait that increases the chance of getting rare items.
Also getting abilities to find nearby nodes.
