Just for clarity, that's 400-500 players online concurrently, not total subscriptions.
New patch tomorrow (Monday) makes it even more awesome..
Download the game first and install it, afterwards purchase the game. It's a bitch to install takes several hours, but it's well worth the wait.
why you are doing this?
I had lots of hope for this game. The free world, sandbox system. I was thinking they could create a good working world like ccp did with "eve online".
The game is not working as intended, its desynched and bugged.
They could just start small and bring a little by little small pieces together, instead of that they created a huge world with unreal engine which dont work and collapse.

I give this game less than 6months of life time.

I was under the impression EvE started in a simular condition, could be wrong.
Those bugs aren't going to be here forever, infact there's not an overwhelming amount anymore. They've fixed so much. So yes the game is going well and we're getting more content for the box.

Eve has 40k concurrent players REGULARLY on their servers... I have no idea what the max players have been. Mortal normally has 400. Comparing the two games is not really possible as EvE launched at a different time and market.
Sure.. it's POSSIBLE that StarVault will become the next EA.... but it's incredibly unlikely to happen. Same with MO and EvE...

No one expected for MO to accomplise what EvE has over many years. 400 concurrent users, actually we have no idea that is just a guestimate but even if it is 400 at primetime the world feels alive and the people are there to interact with. MO will be given the time it needs to grow.

You are aware that EvE didnt start with that many players. In fact they started quite small and unknown, only a few thousand concurrant.
It took CCP years to get that 40k. (60k is their max)

Exactly.. this is why it is SILLY for anyone to use EvE as an example for Mortal Online. Eve was unique and came at a unique time.. and was lucky. For every Eve there are 1000 failures. So yes.. it is POSSIBLE that MO could turn it around and become the next EvE.. It's highly unlikely.

I'm not saying the game is bad, but it's needs a LOT of work. And tomorrows patch is more likely to cause problems then fix anything. Afterall, last patch corrupted most everyones install that downloaded it in the first couple hours, and just about every new system they've put in has had major bugs. OP, read around the official forum.
PS: Eve didn't release today. Eve released like 5 years ago. The market was entirely dif. then, and a game studio could afford to start the way they did. CCP wasn't publicly traded either. They didn't have investors to worry about as far as I was aware. They got the money through table top games or some such stuff.
SV is a publicly traded company that has investors to answer to. It's hardly the same scenario that CCP faced. It's not even the same economy.

Ok, what I should have said is that you cant compare EvE now to MO now. I do think it is fair to compare EvE at release (2003) to MO at release (2010). At that juncture they have alot of similarities.
Though I will agree that EvE did come at a unique time and was lucky, I also think that MO is unique and might be just as lucky.
I dont think its highly unlikely that it could attain an EvE type of success. I think MO has alot going for it, but it also has alot of hurdles to overcome.
People who constantly find nothing but negative things to say about MO arent helping it to succeed any. Im not saying people should be blind fanbois who sing its praises at ever chance, which is annoying as hell, but constantly picking at its flaws is just as bad.
I cant understand why so many have wanted a modern UO, but bash almost everything SV/MO has tried to do up to this point. At least they are trying.
Thats more than most MMO companies have done lately. Most others just seem to want to rush out a halfbaked POS as a quick money grab.

Sorry... but I hope that was a typo. The odds of ANY game reaching an EvE level of success is very, VERY small. The odds of a game and company as flawed as MO/SV reaching that level.. in today's highly competitive market.. is quite nearly zero...

Just like with Eve online and UO and every other MMO ever created the first few months are going to be rough and riddled with bugs. However if you compare the start of MO with the start of other MMO's like UO or Darkfall you know that Mortal Online had a comparitively great start.
With every passing patch this game gets better and better. Todays patch is said to increase game performance by 30%. Along with many many bug fixes and a couple added features that serve to add even more sand to this already sahara desert of a sandbox.
Starvault has planned what new features it will implement, and when they will be implemented according to the demand of the playerbase. The fact that Starvault is not just planning on making a few more patches, there planning on making one major patch a week for months implementing a couple new features, along with countless bug fixes between major patches is proof that there in it for the long haul.
Henrik has already stated in irc, and I'm sure he will state again that he's not just satisfied with the size of the playerbase, but that he's surprised by how large it is.
In the next couple of months we'll start seeing a slow rise in the playerbase as more and more features are implemented and bugs are ironed out, just like how EVE started.

I've hung around this game long enoug to know that's Henrik's defensive style - offense. Like that interview he gave where was absolutely convinced that the economic downturn would have no impact on MO's development, being that they were privately financed. That one came back to bite him on the backside when they needed to raise new capital 6 months ago.
Henrik is over-sure of too many things, to the point of deluded. Someone should ask him in irc where half of SV's staff disappeared to if he's surprised by how large the playerbase is. Did they plan to replace more staff with interns than they actually have? If the playerbase is is surprisingly large, then they must have been planning to go down the pan quicker.

Care to provide a source for either of these? I don't recall either the push for capital that you cite or half of SV's staff disappearing.

Some already call the Icelandic Model of MMO Development:
Nope you are under bad impression, at first there were bug issues in eve like in every game but no desynch/lag issues like mortal online.( there are more lag issues nowadays in eve, ironically). When i started playing eve, (after 4 months of release) i think i played for 1 month 10hours perday, that was a blast. It had 7k player on the server. PvP pve was raging on everywhere..
Now im comparing mortal online to the early eve, heh. Stop lying to yourself and everybody else please, be honest. Star Vault even started to sell collector edition of this game (around 100 dollars if im not mistaken) while game was at the early beta stage. This shows their aim and vision for the game. They could just start with a smaller equip, make a smaller map, use a simple engine, spend less money.
Unreal engine? COOL ! but what for when all the models looks like bethesda's daggerfall from 90s. An endless world, what for when you are alone? Full pvp ? What for when u get killed by an invisible sword because of desynch.
Ah when they released this game ? June 9th 2010 ? Been 2 months and still unplayeble and playerbase is 400? And you want me to give them a chance cause they are indie company? Bad indie is bad indie.
ps : I cant see anything related to mortal online in the article that you posted?
What large playerbase? there are at most 500 players at peak time. is that what you call large? Hell the old EverQuest servers running on EQ emulator for free have 900 players at peak time !
Thing is, usually when players leave a game, they don't come back to it. Many players who have bought the game felt betrayed and like they were screwed by SV at release, and thus will refuse to comeback.
In order for a Sandbox to work, you need players. lots of players. Right now there isn't. And since there are almost no dungeons, no quests, no NPC's and very very little content and nearly nothing for solo players, well...
New patch tomorrow (Monday) makes it even more awesome..

I would not take this guys advice OP. The game hasn't launched in my opinion. I was hoping for this games success but it was most deffienently the biggest flop of a launch since Roma Victar.
"The King and the Pawn return to the same box at the end of the game"

After the alst patch:
My FPS steadily drops the longer I play. After an hour I have to log out and back in to fix the game.
I'm getting errors now when I attempt to log out.
Campfires, and portable extractors are apparently bugged.
Blocking doesn't initiate correctly.
And if Henrik told people on IRC that they have a decent number of subscribers, not as much as they expected, but even worse that most of them aren't even logging into the game, he would be CEO for about about an hour longer. Just because the CEO of a company that has to answer to investors says the populatiion is great, and more then he expected, doesn't mean it's the truth. It means he's the CEO of a company that has to answer to investors, and saying anything else would get him fired.

I guarantee you they have far less subs than they need, unless the vast majority pay and do not play. 500 people on the server at once is now a dream, the last week there are maybe 200 people on the server at any time. It is dropping like a rock.

That's really a null arguement. You can't support claims for the number of people online at any time, or even the amount of subs.
I do believe that they have a good number of subs, whether or not they have enough subs is another issue, and I know for fact that the majority of people subbed aren't logging in or ar e logging in very little. The poll in the subscribers section is a pretty good indicator of how often people are logging in, and it's showing that a good number aren't playing that often.
There's a lot of support for the game. That's important. The game itself isn't bad, it's actually very good, but it's got a lot of issues; most of them stemming from things on Epics end. Once Epic finishes merging MO with the new UE build, yes they have yet another UE build, there should be a lot of improvement across the board.
In a few weeks, or a month or two, you should see a vastly diffirent game. They'll be able to put in real PvE content, better AI, open The capital city, combat will be vastly improved, fewer crashes, a new GUI, mini games, completed crafting, a better looking game, and the list goes on. This is, at least, what we've been told about the new UE build. I don't have any reason to mistrust them. When they said that the last UE build would improve performance they weren't lying, there was a drastic dif.
I don't think people really understand Epics involvment in MO. Epic literally has a vested interest in seeing this game succeed. MO is the only seemless world game using the Unreal Engine. MO is literally a pilot game for Epic, the Unreal Engine, and Epics Atlas technology. Epic wants to not just be at the forefront of game engines, but also seemless world MMO engines. Epic is competing with the crsysis engine; there's a lot of money in MMO's for companies like Epic.
Unfortunetly, at the moment, the game has problems. Hopefully the merge Epic is currently doing will be the turning point, and SV can get on with implimenting better stuff.
This is, at least, what we've been told about the new UE build. I don't have any reason to mistrust them.
How long have you been around in MO? We have been told this same thing probably 20 times. That is why many people who used to love the game are gone. Nothing gets better, if we are lucky it just doesn't get worse and break more stuff.

Believe me.. the future of Epic Games and their UE/Atlas engines are not tied to a tiny company like StarVault. Would they like to see it succeed? Of course.. but no one is going to be blaming Epic Games when Mortal Online closes shop. Just think.. a "success" for StarVault would be to keep 10k or so subscribers... that's not even a blip on the radar of most companies and thus Mortal's success or failure will have very little to do with the future of Epic Games and their engines.

Agreed. This is at least the 3rd of 4th time they have said they are waiting on a Miracle Patch from Epic Games. Who could forget the epic Volcano story?
Heck... they started with the "just a few more weeks" stuff last year... and haven't stopped since.

ITS TOO HARD! - Matt Firor (ZeniMax)
Sorry... but I hope that was a typo.

Bad indie is bad indie.
ps : I cant see anything related to mortal online in the article that you posted?
ps2: edit for typo
What large playerbase? there are at most 500 players at peak time. is that what you call large? Hell the old EverQuest servers running on EQ emulator for free have 900 players at peak time !
Thing is, usually when players leave a game, they don't come back to it. Many players who have bought the game felt betrayed and like they were screwed by SV at release, and thus will refuse to comeback.
In order for a Sandbox to work, you need players. lots of players. Right now there isn't. And since there are almost no dungeons, no quests, no NPC's and very very little content and nearly nothing for solo players, well...
That's certainly not looking very good.
Meh...
I would not take this guys advice OP. The game hasn't launched in my opinion. I was hoping for this games success but it was most deffienently the biggest flop of a launch since Roma Victar.
