You know?, it's funny to think that in terms of pure gameplay, rich experience and sophisticated entertainment, SWG NGE 2005 may actually be better than SW:TOR.
I never thought in my wildest dreams that would be possible. Oh, what a world.
Hey here's an idea... go play SWG then. They still have space combat and you can still play house with your little sandbox friends.
When i played house in a sandbox, it cosisted of pretty decent sized pvp attacks and defences of player made towns , which were really a lot of fun. Also, players selling their crafted items to further your character progression, and pretty decent chunks of player made content too...
Though i'm thinking that isn't what you were reffering to...
As for EvE, you're right, EvE is ONE THING, spaceships and space combat. Thats the one thing EvE is, and no, its not appealing to everybody.
umm no...
EVE is:
-space combat
-tactics game
-trading game
-ultimate metagaming game
-game with politics and spying involved
-playerbased economy
-1 servercluster
-industrial+hauling+PVE content
-ultimate sandbox
-ultimate laggame with thousands of ppl blobbing each other.
that is EVE.
Those are EvEs features, but in contrast, it has no ground combat, and I stand firm that it appeals to a very specific niche. You can say the same thing on most of those features for Fallen Earth.
1 server cluster, player based economy, tactics, politics -- but FE is also a playstyle that doesn't appeal to all gamers.

I started playing SWG looking for the type of experience you described, but sadly I never found that. Most of my time in game was spent bored out of my mind traveling around the endless sprawling player-ghettos on every planet. I don't think I had one truly enjoyable PvP encounter the entire time I played the game... and I was looking for it.
But my post was really aimed at the OP. This game is not SWG and I think its important that everyone realize that right here and now. If you are looking for SWG2, this is NOT the game for you. Bioware has never had any intention of designing this game like a sandbox. It honestly boggles my mind that STILL, after all this time, people seem to expect it to be like SWG...
Now SW:TOR may turn out to suck as much as the doomsayers here whine about or as great as therabid fanbois say it is...that is a discussion for another day,you knwo whe we cna get hands on personal experience on the whole game.
As to the topic.I really don't knwo what people were expecting. If Space Combat was gonna be a fully fledged game in and of itself and equal to the RPG on foot sections, don't you think it would of been given the same amount of press as the on foot parts from the start? It was obviously gonna be a smaller part of the game more of an flavor enhancer thna a mian ingredient so to speak.
Now would I like more freedom in the space combat than what on rails implies?Yes but I don't expect Freelancer or Freespace type complexity or depth either. It's bene obvious from the start that playing your avatar in groudn based combat was the meat of the RPG because that's what they've been showing us and telling us from the start.
Will the space sections suck?Maybe won't know till w've actualyl tried it.The one advantage of being on rials is it cna deliver a much more cinematic experience and better tell a story albiet a linear one.It is also I am guessing easier to put in a multi-mission quest storyline.
For Example imagine boarding a ship, disabling it's crew, setting a charge to destroy it and then leaving, but instead of just automatically heading for th enext ship your charged to board and scuttle or watching a cutscene inbetween...you go into an on rails space combat mission where you have to fight off enemy starfighters whilst flying to your next objective. That could totall work, but of course this may nto happen in the game either we don't know.

Yes, SWG in my opinion wasnt as fantastic as everyone makes it out to be. If it was, it probably never would have went through those drastic changes.. The game needed a lot of work. They just took a hatchet it too it..
My thought is, if this was SWG2... they would have named it SWG2... but i guess that makes too much sense.. ; )
oh, and the sandbox i was referring to.. wasn't SWG

How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them? R.A.Salvatore
Guys FFS stop making posts about this Themeparked, Level Based, Point and click combat waste of space.
Seriously go and play some of the great MMOs that we have out currently.
I smell a butthurt Pre-CU fanboi.
On topic: I wish people would quit comparing SWTOR to that crapheap some people call SWG... Very different games.
The perhaps you should remove your nose from his ass and let him discuss the procs and cons of SWTOR without being insulted?
Do you mean pros and cons? I did not see one comparison in that post, lol. All he did was whine...
This...there was no discussion implied at all...in fact his post was actually anti-discussion because he want sanyone woh does not share his opinion to stop posting about SW:TOR.
2-8 minute predetermined flight path doesn't really sound very exciting. Sounds more like a minigame than actual space combat.
It is a mini game, it's basically been described as such since they revealed it. Why anyone thought it wouldn't be is.. well I guess over my head. From the first few sentences they released they've called it nothing more than a diversion from the other tasks you will be performing. It is not a major focus of the game, just something to do when you feel like doing it.
Not unlike the many mini-games in MMO's such as WOW. As for it not being actual space combat, it's combat that takes place in space, what else do you call it?

I never thought in my wildest dreams that would be possible. Oh, what a world.
A rich experience and sophisticated entertainment are certainly not phrases I would use to describe the never changing gameplay of JTL. It's full of missions that are extremely vague in what you must do to achieve victory as such you can easily wind up spending twenty minutes to a half an hour flying around taking pot shots at some no named freighter and you call that rich?
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

2-8 minutes is short, for you. But for some people, it's just right, possibly to much. Also you're confusing time and fun, perhaps you should think about that. What we should be asking is how fun those 2-8 minutes will be, not questioning the length of this mini-game that is said to be optional.
God forbid "The Old Republic" have a space flight system that is similar to the game that it is based on.
lol, serious man.
Its just wierd how people look at this game, it has to be SWG, I dunno, but seriously, if you played Ktor, you know what to expect here, its really that basic. They will improve on that game in that way in a MMO setting.
once again bioware shows that it doesn't know what we the mmo commuinty want and rather then give us what we want they want to give us a watered down pos game that will fail.

More often than not the community does not know what it wants and the developer does. Also lets not forget that now we are the minority. People who want money and success in video games have to make them for the new gamers WoW brought in, sadly.
I expected it to be short and for everyone to have unrealistic assumtions that it would be crossed between SWG JTL and Xwing vs TIE Fighter but somehow slightly less content filled than on the planets.
I'm still going to get SWTOR when it comes out and be happy with what it DOES have.

They did improve it, it's not a turret shooter.
How many times does it have to be said this is not the mini-game that was in KOTOR?

I'm saying that it's a shame that they couldn't come up with something clever and decided to resort to a poor minigame.
