Three big ass games, a sickening amount of hype.
Will we be graced by three amazing games or just more crap that simply doesnt live up to peoples expectations/ hype?
I personally feel all three games are going to set this forum on fire, noone will be happy but thats just me lol.
what do you think?

My crystal ball is broke.. I DONT KNOW
I tried the question 3 times in a magic 8 ball and it said Definately, Maybe, and Absolutely. So things looking up!
I keep shaking mine but it keeps going to "stick with Eve, save your money" I knew i shouldnt have bought my 8 ball from the CCP store !!!!!!!
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Did that ball say get the WoD mmo?
No but it did list WoD release date on the promotional material in the box.
"Sometime after the world ends, expect a new great mmo that you will never play from CCP".
Goodtimes!!!!! lol!
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I can't really see FFXIV "rocking" the mmo scene. It feels the same old thing and might end up being repetitive. Combat looks really slow, it doesn't really excite me or have that heroic feel. I hope it doesn't make you spend much time working just to get to the fun parts. Overall I don't see much coming out of FFXIV that would make an impact in the mmo scene.
With TOR I'm neutral on this game. I'm not quite sure how I feel about this game, but with Story being one of the major content they sure are bringing the RPG back into the mmo to define your character even more. Now for GW2, it's very ambitious. Like with TOR they are also bringing the RPG back into the mmo with their personal stories and more new things. Such as the dynamic event system, no holy trinity, versatile classes, dynamic combat, rts inspired world vs world pvp, etc. GW2 has more potential to impact the genre.
Lets see how it goes when 2011 comes for TOR and GW2.
These MMO's are just a bump in the road. The real one to look out for is planetside NEXT
Add TERA to the list, and you've got everything I'm pumped for. They will all be successful and add a bit more variety to the market. They all have their own different things going for them too so I think everyone who isn't too absurdly picky will find something they can enjoy. They all deserve a good amount of hype.
Right at this moment I'm probably most hyped about GW2 and TERA out of the 4, but I'm excited about all of them to some degree.
GW2 will deliver. GW2 looks very solid.
FF I never got into so I have no opinion.
SWTOR is a flop in the making. What a pathetic lazy choice for Bioware to not even design their own MMO graphics engine. Every feature in SWTOR is pretty much following WoWs format. The graphics are kiddie cartoony, and NOT impressive....but they have fancy VOICE OVERS! bleh...
The "never was" Heroes Journey skinned for Star Wars, shame on you Bioware for waisting the massive budget you had for this game and STILL choosing to just contract some pos.
GW gonna be hit or miss depending on how they deliver. i can see this suffering from the same thing as EQ2 being too different form the original.
FF looks like it should be good but a lot of people still feel burned from 11
the one im looking most foward to out of those 3 is tor
I challenged my reflection to a staring contest....4 days later i won
Being a HUGE Final Fantasy fan, naturally I'm most hyped for FFXIV...but I don't think it will bring anything NEW to the genre. Maybe a few innovations on mechanics in FFXI, but nothing major.
I think TOR will be...different...not saying bad or good, but different indeed. I will definitely try it...not at launch, but in time. Some people will love it, others will be disappointed. It'll probably bring some new ideas to MMOs in general, but it will not be a so called "WoW killer".
I know nothing of GW1 or 2, so I rally have no opinion on it.....but if I had to guess, I'd say basically the same thing I said for TOR.
PLAYING: NOTHING!!!
PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM
WAITING FOR: Dust 514
SW:TOR has a strong IP and untill now very good presentation. I expect already large initial box sales, but not sure about the retention value.
GW2 isnt subbased. So their financial success is based solely on box sales, which is easier then making ppl stay with the game for a long period. Their presentation has also been very good so far. Both SW:TOR and GW2 released facts about what will be in the game, instead of vague promises. I expect GW2 to sell a lot of copies, if only because of the loyal fanbase of GW1. GW2 also seems to have innovative design, but I wonder if itll change much in MMO land. GW1 was innovative and didnt change anything either.
I didnt keep track of FFXIV, so have no idea how that one will fare.
I think FF XIV will be popular among the fans of FF XI. They will also probably pick up those who wanted to play XI, but didn't like the forced grouping.
SWTOR will have success. KOTOR has a huge following, and I can imagine that SWTOR will bring many first timers to the mmo space.
GW2 will also have success. I think you'll see a lot of mmo vets going to it to see what, if anything, is truly innovative. The Buy 2 Play model should also be popular due to the econ, and the fact that you don't really have to drop a current sub to play GW2.
I also think that this particular trio of games will be the last straw for many folks if any or all of them turn out to be failures.
Out of the three, GW2 is the one to watch. ANet is talking a lot of talk, and if it's truly innovative and becomes wildly popular, we will most likely see another shift in the type of mmos that will be made. (One can hope we will be bitching about a different type of "clone" aside from WoW).
Add Rift to that list
This is the most insightful and well thought out post I've seen on these forums.
.
Bioware is spending 150 million dollars. If they strike out, it will be a comedy of errors on their part.
.
Blizzard only spent 60 million.

Exactly how I feel, Admitedly I wasn't very excited about the game as Im not a big fan of the series but once I got my beta invite I was very eager to play and from what I've seen it isn't something that will "rock" the genre. Yes it's a good game with some unique features but much of the game is pretty much like what we have now but with some very annoying parts such as being more grind based and having a fairly slow combat pace. I would say its a mix between the current genre and the next, whereas with GW2 you definitely see it as the next gen of MMOs.
edit- forgot GW2 is F2P.
Wow...how is that possible >.>.
I assure you, it's a decent size title in it's own right.
Oh its Star Wars, I didn't recognize the abbreviation. Yeah that will probably be pretty significant Bioware being behind it.
GW2 has a non-typical gameplay and subscription model (b2p), so whether it fails or not, it will be justified.
I can't see TOR adding anything really new... it's just more of the same, so if it doesn't come out more than polished it'll just die to the existing colossus (WoW) or stay on life support.
FF as a brand has a good chunk of aficionados, but most of the latest production (after FF8) was more of a failure, so i'm not sure whether it'll prosper absorbing FFXI players or just keep a low profile.
What did we learn in the past 4 years ? (starting with Vanguard/Lotro and ending with SC).
MMMO's in development have 3 fases:
- From 2 years before publishment to 1month before Beta.
Extreme hype from the publishers/ Everything is possible/ ALL is included/ biggest launch ever/ more features are included as long as any idiot on a website demands it.
- From Beta to 3 days before publishment.
Extreme hype from fans (most coming from those not in the game yet), corrections from publishers, down to earth expectations and lots of comments about obviously lacking features. Depending on the product the comments range from "it is still in Beta" or "biggest dud ever".
- 3 months after launch.
The game crashes to reality in a loss of around 80% of its launching hype. All people coming back down to earth and a hardcore small number of fans still defending the obvious thing: it is just another standard MMO.
Find out for yourself how this mechanism works for the 3 games above.
FF14 is by far the closest to launch (and in Beta): no PvP and 1 minute slooooow combat to even kill a trivial mob. People are already coming from predictions of millions of subs to a few 100K at the most on most forums.
TOR is the next on the line, it is a very mixed bag of comments, wait until the so called Beta will show its true face seen in video leaks in our fase 2 above.
GW2 is by far the game that still sits in its early development cycle. So it gains the most hype. It is still in the cycle of "everything and 100 times more" is in it .... reality check : 4 game developpers (head game designer first) left a week ago to join Jeff Strain already....
Lesson: People never learn from the past.
All I know is there is nothing easier than having the greatest mmorpg in history before anyone can play it. I am pretty much immune to hype at this point after spending almost 15 years following these types of games and seeing 90% of them flop.
SWTOR and GW2 will both have a big impact on MMOs but the question is if they live up to the hype.
Only final fantasy fans care about FF14, they will love it and the rest of the world wont care.
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
Funny that you mentioned this. Two of these 4 devs were also working on WoW (Jeff Strain was the head designer of wow ) and they also leaft in the middle of development of WoW. Yet i dont see WoW going down after this.
3 years is a long time to still be in early development (and to also have gameplay ready for PAX and GC definitely screams early development... definitely /Sarcasm)
The game is coming out next year, I don't think its in early development, I think its in the balancing and tweaking stages because that's what I can get from each interview and each blog post by them.
In any case, I hear what you're saying and I think people shouldn't shoot their hopes up so that can be pleasantly surprised or not dissapointed.
This is not a game.
