I think it looks good, suppose they are trying to capture the historical things liked about Star Wars. I liked Rogue Squadron type games and loved Star Wars: The Arcade Game. Man the memories of playing that at Godfathers Pizza... the quarter box was broken and you could reach in a little and click off dozens of credits... shhh.
Anyhow I would not get too disappointed yet. So maybe it's not Eve Online - it is just one part of TOR. I say give it a chance.

man I miss me some Godfathers Pizza! and those comercials oy lol
ontopic, as I said still looks pretty good for arcady main game escapisim...
fun not to hardcore and a bit cinimatic kinda just puts you there.
I am thinking of it like the arcade machine in Starcraft II. A nice distraction time to time to keep you from logging out when you don’t want to play the “main game”. I hope they add more of these kinds of things like the gambling game from KOTOR.
Bioware really seems on the right track from what I have seen. This might not ever be a high end raiding guild dominated game but we have enough of those kinds of games already. A game that focuses more on your characters journey and less on clearing the same raid zones week after week to gear up your toon so you can clear the next set of zones over and over again seems like a fresh change.
Well, that does not look half bad for a mini-game. It's quite evocative of the movies, has nice space vistas and looks to be potentially trigger-happy fun.
While I have to outright admit I really like space sims like TIE Fighter or Freespace a lot more than rail or tunnel shooters, I couldn't say the former is intrinsically superior to the latter. That would be like saying 3D FPS games are superior to platformers because the former has an additional axis of movement. It's a convention. It sets its own rules, its own limitations. And makes "gameplay" out of those limitations.
Another thing to admit is that Star Wars does have a long history of rail shooters. The original arcade game, Rebel Assault games, Rogue Squadron... Each has its fans. To me, tunnel shooters are outdated to the point of being just an occasionally pleasant memory from the distant past, but I'm aware there are still potential players, casual or otherwise, for this sub-genre.
In my opinion the real problem with choosing this form of space combat for the MMO is that it'd probably be hard to implement well-made PVP or cooperative action into this. In a TIE Fighter-like game, those are easy to implement well, as well as other stuff that would make the experience much deeper. Though I can't see Bioware putting a fully fleshed out space sim into what's basically a ground based RPG, an additional Z axis in the same "sequence" setting would be swell.
Hmm, graphically it's ok i'd say. Other than that it looks indeed like a typical rail combat such as Rogue Squadron. May keep me occupied when having a break from the main gameplay. Besides, space combat was never the reason for me waiting so hard for TOR. But it's a welcoming addition.
Rogue Squadron isn't really a rail shooter, there are some missions that are pretty restricted and very much like rail shooters in RS (like trench runs), but other missions allow you to fly about freely.
Starfox 64 isn't entirely a rail shooter, areas like all range mode allowed for pretty much 3D combat within a limited area hence why you had moves like a U-turn and a flip.
this looks suspiciously similar to minigames made for the clone wars mmo comin out in september. It's a diversion obviously to break up what I worry will be the momotony of the core game, I don't have high hopes for this one, bioware was the wrong company to work with.

You are right, they also removed the rails for multiplayer I think.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

Yep they did. That's pretty much the only thing I'd hope Bioware include in swtor space combat. It in keeps within their cinematic experience but also provides the player with a bit of freedom.
Visually this was by far above my expectations. This also shows that this will not be a turret style shooter like in KOTOR. I think this has potential, and using this style of shooter they can easily open this up to allow for free roam gameplay. I doubt we'd see PvE free roam though, but in PvP I couldn't think of it working any other way.
Very exciting though.. ... like visually exciting. I wonder what happens when your ship is destroyed, do you just start over? Cost penalty?

Indeed, I hope they do that as well and there does seem to be an intention in that direction, as they were looking at implementing space PvP and I can't imagine how they'd do PvP in a space game on rails.

I'm more interested in knowing how they do ship Travel/Player Housing. I'd like to hope that travel isn't just a load screen, and that there's some significan't customization you can do to your ship.
It was entertaining. I'd say it's work beta testing or a look at. I would say it is opening the chance to one up Star Treks combat system while keeping in line with trying to incorporate space combat with a mmo story line. It has potential. I will also admit this is the first time the character graphics didn't look like dog crap to me in the cut scene.
Originally posted by Anubisan I thought that looked really cool to be honest. By doing the rails system, Bioware can give us a much more cinematic experience. Some of those battles looked straight out of the movies! While I agree it is a little disappointing that we will not have a full-fledged space game like X-Wing / Tie-Fighter, I know that was never the focus of the game. I want Bioware to focus on their strengths and I think this will be a nice diversion from the regular ground game.
Looks cool, but this is still just a single player minigame. Were talking about MMORPG here. I really want to see gameplay that involves more than 5 guys...
Well.... there went ALL intrest I had in the game...
If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen. Samuel Adams
Ofcourse I would prefer the freedom to roam anywhere but this does look good!
I agree the freedom would have been nice. But I was expecting a lot less, so I was pleasantly surprised.

It looks good but it does come across as a mini-game. Still, I think I can have fun with it. I just wonder if they have plans to expand this. I imagine at some point they will have some sort of "battlegrounds" type of pvp experience.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Yes I am anxious to hear if they have plans to expand on this myself. If they have the intention to do an expansion for a well done space experience, I'll be on board for sure.

I think it might be entertaining at least something to do in between quests. I never expected to go around exploring space anyway.

good post i agree 100%
railshooter.
I won't pay a sub for this joke. Good luk(e) to fans.
Buh bye.
Looks awesome i just hope they create some realy hard missions that are nearly impossible to finish but i doubt that since most people suck at games.
Looks cool, but this is still just a single player minigame. Were talking about MMORPG here. I really want to see gameplay that involves more than 5 guys...
I think it looks cool. It isn't space exploration like I wanted, but I did like starfox quite a bit, so I'll still give it a shot.

I am still wondering how much we'll be glued to the rails....
Sure thing there must be a freedom in the movement of our ships...

Well, perhaps for a start it's ok.
