I am still wondering how much we'll be glued to the rails....
Sure thing there must be a freedom in the movement of our ships...
As you can observe, you can move your ship left & right and up & down the screen, but you cannot stop your movement or change the direction completely.
If you are flying through an asteroid field you can (and will have to obviously) dodge the asteroids, but you can not pitch up and just leave the field or turn around.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
Space combat wasn't a priority in the first place, all they did succumb to whiny fans.
Be happy with what you got and stop complaining. The fact that they succame to the whiny fans just means those fans will now find something else to complain about, which is going be about the fact that it is rail combat.
"We got rid of the trinity." How'd you do that? "Now everyone can heal." Sounds like you just took the mechanic and spread it thin. "Well no, there's one class that can do it better than others." I see, so they're healers. "No. They're.." -mind asplode-
Well.... there went ALL intrest I had in the game...
So your only interest in TOR was space combat, a feature confirmed only about a month ago while TOR's official website with all details regarding its features is up since 2008. Unless you're a troll you where definitely interested in the wrong game. Try Black Prophecy or Jujmpgate Evolution instead.
Just makes me want the game more and more every time they release videos like this. Fantastic teaser, and I can only imagine what it will look like by release (Which honestly looks good enough for release right now).
It reminds of me of Rebel Assault games. You have to follow a pre-determined flight plan, but within that path you can dodge and shoot. That's under the assumption, that is what we're seeing.
This looks pretty cool, though I'd agree that if all we're doing is shooting at targets as they fly by, the game play's going to be shallow (point and click, maybe some abilities?). It's a bunch of flash and no substance, the kind of thing I'd expect in a minigame, and not something I'd want to spend hours at a time doing. That being said, my understanding is that it has pretty much been treated as a minigame by the Bioware team, so it'll be doing exactly what they intended. Unfortunately, what some of the expectant gamers were looking for wasn't what Bioware created, and while I'm one amongst the crowd of individuals wondering where the hell my open-space-game is, the general feedback I'm receiving across the internet is one of positivity, and acceptance. Maybe Bioware intended to do more with it, or is planning to expand upon this, the base of their space game, until a time in which resources are available to do something truly great, but I'm still left wondering where their 150$ million went, and why we're receiving a game that does, pretty much, what every other MMO is already doing (aside from their space minigame, and the IP itself).

Good question, and there is not definitive answer for that, but something I can point out to you easily is -- the content. Supposedly this is a very content heavy game, not just with personal stories, not just with the mini games, but with exploration, the world size, and the many different locations. 200+ hours of personal story alone is pretty tremendous, then count 8 additional classes on to that, story changes due to companion characters, etc. The massive amount of testing that has to go on, making sure a choice in your first 30 minutes of gameplay still makes sense after your 130th hour of personal story gameplay. The story options alone are immense. Multiply that by the different voice actors, the world changing quests, PvP areas, and leave the door open about 30% of the way for information we haven't received on features that will be in the game such as this brand new End Game they've been talking about and I believe the game could probably equal that 150 million mark.
Then again, without playing it, noone knows for sure, maybe it won't be as vast as they make it seem, and the level design for each world will be relatively small... I mean thats not what they said, but perhaps thats what will happen? I guess I'll have to wait and see.
I hope that it's not just videos and the mechanics to the space combat system actually have some substance. (IE: A reason to go pewpew and not just because you can go pewpew)
Arcade ship combat its all i needed in an mmorpg..now i can die in peace...after i play an arcade game with ships...
Now seriously..i hope they make an expansion with real space content..this must be some minigame to keep us busy between loading screens going from planet to planet...

Allot of people don't like space sims like Freelancer/X-Wing/EVE/privateer/Elite etc. (just look at the market and tell me how many space sims where released in the past 5 years that are enjoyable maybe X3 but thats taste).
Since TOR is pointed more to the masses they make space combat without any down time, i don't think they will ever release a full fledged space sim.
Well i take it, i actually never thought they would release any form of space combat, so i am happy about any sugar they give me.
This type of mini-game fits in fin with the style of MMO TOR is going to be. It willmserve as a fun side game as was intended. The rest of the game willmbe the story based themepark MMO that they set out to make. This will be a great MMO for those who like this style. If you are a sandbox virtual world MMO type player. You will not like this game for the long hall. Many still may play it as a co-op SPG and leave. But BW set out to try to get as many subs as possible. This style of MMO will get them the most. Good or bad, it is what it is and won't change. So enjoy what will be launched next year or keep looking for the non-existent perfect MMO. I will at least know that I will have fun in this game. That is all that matters to me as a gamer. There are other MMo's that will give me a different style I can still play at the same time.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them? R.A.Salvatore
Just proves that the MMO genre has gone to crap, just all dumbed down casual games now. I want exploration and freedom in my MMO, not to be on rails and the ground game will probably hold your hand all the way through too.

Well, you can move up or down, and left or right. And im pretty sure there will be a Nitro button...
It does look like fun but it is not what I was hoping for. It does not matter as I shall still be buying the game no matter what.

I lol'd.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
With that statement are you sure YOUR not drunk?
I don't care about innovation I care about fun.
I agree the space did look crap.
Oh and thanks for another lol.

I'm a massive Star Wars fan and I DON'T love this game.
Then again, I'm a fan of the original Star Wars movies, not this new-era of SW that we're stuck in now.
Hm...... could they have made it something like Eve... but more toned down?.... or something like star trek?...... hm...
I don't feel impressed... I was expecting to be impressed... I was also hoping for Halo Reach type of space combat...
This is not a game.
I should Bioware have to make two games in order to impress you?
I am impressed that there is even space combat.
I don't care about innovation I care about fun.

Oh thats right, thats much better. I totally see the resemblance. ... ... ok I really don't. I'm still trying to decide whether or not this is a joke.
yes, because all this game is going to be is a "railshooter" lol
