Okay, so Uncle Owen calls Ben Kenobi a "crazy old wizard", and an Imperial officer refers to the Force as "sorcery". That makes the terms canon. Still, I'm not on board with this one. I can understand the peons of the Galactic Empire using these terms as it had been 18 years since the Jedi had been killed almost to extinction; however, in the Old Republic timeline, Jedi were seemingly as common as farm boys, so I'm not sure the terms really fit.

I'm not a raging star wars fan and really have only seen the movie. Even then I do recall seeing or hearing an occasionaly reference to "sorcerous ways" of "crazy old wizard". In those contexts they felt very much in the background of the story.
To myself, and I am sure there will be more, seeing classes called wizards and sorcerers sort of detracts from the immersion factor. It will always make me think of tolkein based fantasy.
The terms may be appropriate to star wars and have supporting references to obscure wikipages and minor references in the films, but they don't feel like they belong if you know what I mean. Personally I would have found some other names to use.
Oh sure, it's mentioned a couple of times in the films and even in EU.
But it's mostly used by non-Jedi to refer to practices which they don't really understand as 'magic'.
It has been mentioned a lot of times actually. And Star Wars is not just limited to movies. Seriously if you think sorcs and wizards are not part of Star Wars lore i don't know how you can call yourself true SW fan.

There may have been a comic book featuring a jedi that used a stick that was called a wizard, I ran across it on some site's "top 100 star wars characters", and there was definitely a "sorceress" in the ewok movies. If your only experience was the main trilogy, or newer the ones, don't discount what could have been said in the vast amount of other source material you missed out on.
Haha yea i totaly forgot about the wizard reference in the films. and don't forget in episode 1 where the kid says, "that's so wizard, Ani".

So you hate the game because it uses the lore of the time period?
It's basic inference. You could use any word to describe anything but in the minds of the majority of people that word would generally be linked to something, a style object etc.
When someone thinks of Stars they do not think of wizards that's not to say someone in the universe couldn't be called a wizard but to the majority of the public such a name clashes with what people generally consider Star Wars.
There is a reason why the average star was fan doesn't call Darth Vader a sorcerer, or Obi-Wan a wizard. I just think it's a really bad choice of name that causes far more problems than it's worth. It's why you don't call car drivers, pilots or spears, sticks. It causes confusion.
I'm not too sure of that if me and you are taking about a friend who is driving a car and I all of a sudden started calling him the pilot you couldn't make the jump in logic to know that I wouldn't just jump into a story about an airline pilot? Maybe its due to the fact that I have to talk to so many ghetto folk and am often forced to figure out what they are trying to say but it's not that hard.

Yes I do know what they are. The Witches of Dathomir (also referred to as either Dathomirians or Dathomiri) were a group of Human Force-sensitives native to the planet Dathomir. They were also known as the Daughters of Allya in honor of the wayward Jedi Knight Allya, who was banished to the planet around 600 BBY, and who they regarded as their ancestress. By the time of the Galactic Empire, Allya's descendants had divided into female-dominated clans that were named after regional landmarks. Each clan had a unique set of rules regarding Force usage, but all the clans held one rule above all others: "Never concede to evil". And wizard was only used in episode 4 when they didn't think starwars was going to go anywhere and in episode 1 where it was used as a term to reference something that is "cool". Wizard is no where in starwars LORE. Stop instigating. You have no idea what you are talking about.

This has been talked about at length on the SWTOR forums. I was a little surprised by it myself as I wasn't really aware this was a thing, I had to look it up.
Even still I feel these names are a little obscure to be used as advanced class titles, but as DE said in his latest interview, there are still a lot of things subject to change. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the advanced class names change too. Then again, at the end of the day, whats in a name?
Hopefully they'll use different terminology, but "wizard" is really misused in fantasy. The origin of the word comes from "wise". Wizard originally meant "someone who is wise in some particular area of expertise".
Wizard comes from the word Wizened, which comes from the word Wise, however "wizard" itself never simply meant "wise".
Nope. Wizard and Wizened aren't related at all.
Merriam-Webster:
Wizard:
Etymology: Middle English wysard, from wis, wys wise
Date: 15th century
"Wizened" isn't the root. It's not even in the ballpark.
Etymology: Middle English wisenen, from Old English wisnian; akin to Old High German wesan?n to wither
"to become dry, shrunken, and wrinkled often as a result of aging or of failing vitality
transitive verb: to cause to wizen <a face wizened by age>
They are stupid class names. But let's think about this rationally (i know - hard!):
The Star Wars galaxy is a modern world full of technology, education, myths, legends, the force and all kinds of stuff. Kinda like our world, just with more tech and the force.
So for the sake of argument, if in our world, a bunch of people existed that could levitate stuff, read minds and shoot lightning out of their fingers, how long would be until someone referred to them as wizards or witches or magicians or superheroes? Not too long. The fictional world of star wars is not that different from ours. If someone is shootings lightning out of the their fingers, then someone else is gonna call it magic and call them a wizard. Even if there is a perfectly ration scientific explanation for it (i.e. getting your midichlorians all twisted - thanks George Lucas!).
So really, bad marketing move for BioWare in encouraging even more people to scream "WoW with lightsabers!", but Star Wars wise, it's not that farfetched.

The Force Adept is strong in the force, but follows a different path than that of the Jedi. To the Force Adept, the Force and the aid it provides are more mysterious, more supernatural. etc...
Exploits: Some Force Adepts become adventurers as part of a quest to learn more about the Force (or whatever name they call it). Others do so out of necessity. They are forced from their world, hunted by unscrupulous agents, or are interested in what the galaxy might have to offer them. Force Adepts might be called wizards, shamans, witches or prophets, depending on where they come from and what traditions they follow.
So at least in the PnP game, the term Wizard is mentioned.
Sorceror is used quite often in fact; Sith sorcery is one form of dark side powers that appears quite often in SW media.
Jedi Wizard on the other hand, I've never heard of that; and it is quite unfitting imo as well.
Still, according to new interview with Daniel Erickson (lead writer), some of these things could still change; I hope they replace that particular on with something like 'Seer' or 'Sage' etc...
Haha yea I dunno about the "wizard" thing. I've never read a jedi being referred to as a wizard. That is what lucas envisioned them as but it's not in the lore. But then again, lucasarts has always embraced the 3rd party contributions to the starwars galaxy so who knows. I'm sure they will name them something appropriate. Star wars fans can get pretty brutal hehe
You're kidding right??? in 1977 with in the first what......15 minutes of A new Hope, Uncle ben Says Something to the effect that Old Ben is just a crazy wizard...........
yeah in the original movies 'wizard' and 'sorcerer' seem to be derisive terms.
even if the terms were never used, why cant 'canon' be added to? all the extended universe is just adding to the canon of the original films. why does it have to be stuck to so rigidly?
does someone have to write a novel or add it into a pen and paper game before bioware is allowed to put something in the game?
Yeah the names made me think "Really???REALLY?!?!?!?" when I first saw them too.But in the end thay could call the classes Sith Bamboozala and Jedi Boomshakalaka as long as the game is good and the classes are fun.
While I do feel the names are a little unimaginative. I'm not sure they're exactly out of place, at least within this time-line. as I really don't know a whole lot about this time-line, outside of the KOTOR games. This time period is more or less unexplored for the most part is it not, at least in terms of life in the galaxy?
Now while in the films it is mentioned a few times that force users are viewed as wizards and/or sorcerers. It is true that these were more or less average Joe views post imperial take-over.
On the other hand, Jedi numbered in the thousands during this time period. Which would mean any force user who was good would be viewed in large part as a Jedi, at least in galactic terms. Yet possibly he isn't exactly a Jedi in terms of training? More so he is of a nature of force user that is known in his culture as a wizard? This is also taking into account the Adept description posted above. The same could be applied in the sith counterparts case.
Now that may be outside of your personal view, the whole concept could be. You have to consider it's usage in star wars lore long before this case. Who's to say exactly how it fits into the lore until we see how it's written in?
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
So you hate the game because it uses the lore of the time period?
What he says. Do some research before you complain. Sith were often referred to as Sorcerers. Things were quite different in the old days. For instance there existed the ranks of Jedi Lord, and all such oddities.

Better names than "Sith Sorcerer" but which have the same resonance...
Sith Hierophant
Sith Psychopomp
Sith Mystagogue
Sith Auspex
Sith Thaumaturge
Better names than "Jedi Wizard" but with the same feel...
Jedi Sacristan
Jedi Harbinger
Jedi Magister
Jedi Eremite
Jedi Ascetic

What he says. Do some research before you complain. Sith were often referred to as Sorcerers. Things were quite different in the old days. For instance there existed the ranks of Jedi Lord, and all such oddities.
