It sounds like players will be creating content but the other players will have to play to access that content. If that is the case I will be sticking with NWN 1 and 2 as I still enjoy both games.

I say bring it on if its D&D and they capture the feel and provide a good toolset. Then it could be a massive winner.

I don't know but as far as I'm concern, I have a list of developers I trust and Cryptic is not one of them.

I'm a big DnD fan and I love the Forgotten Realms, Cryptic is walking on a fine line here, but judging from their resume of games, they don't make quality games - it's just a job for them that pays the bill, no passion or pride what soever, and if there is, well it doesn't show.

I guess I'm just biased because many developers are currently have really good games into development right now that raises the bar for others who will attempt to jump into this Online Game business.

I'm not buying another cryptic game and reading that interview only further confirm my reasons not to.

Shed some light please as i am totally lost.

NWN property? So they are going to rehash old artwork from NWN?

How does DnD have anything to do with this game and why would it have anything to do with a NwN game?

If the game is going to use NWN property,it would be a NWN game no?Otherwise we might as well say WOW=EQ since it is an exact copy of Eq only it is using Warcraft property.

I am lost as to why there would be any connection what so ever between DnD/Hasbro/WOTC and Cryptic and NwN.If Cryptic was making a game using NWN property, why would they drag Hasbro into the fray?

Is Hasbro/WOTC creating a partnership to make a NWN game with the Dnd rule set?

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Neverwinter was cool as an AOL pay by the minute sort of game based on the old Gold Box series of D&D games by SSI.  Then BioWare revamped the series with a huge toolset the likes of which haven't really come about again.  Obsidions NWN2 not included.  I do not believe that Cryptic is going to be able to bring anything new or all that great with this iteration.  In fact by looking at the hatchet jobs that Cryptic has released over the past couple years I have anything but a sense of foreboding doom surrounding this title, maybe it will be the straw that breaks Cryptics back?  We can only hope, unless they have actually seen how miserable their games have been, do a complete 180, and treat this license with the reverence it deserves :)

I would welcome the cockroach any day to eat from my lunch rather than see Cryptic make any more products of any kind that could possibly be considered "online" or "role-player" or "game".

Cryptic will butcher NeverWinter's Nights, not because they won't try to do it right, but because the entire Cryptic Organization is an accident waiting to happen. The Product (in this case a NWN "omg") won't fall very far from the parent tree of Cryptic at all. Just like STO, just like CO. Rotten apples on the ground.

Can I cry now? Might as well mourn and get over it...

My thoughts: Cryptic is calling it an "OMG" (what a stupid term...) instead of an MMORPG so that Atari can win their lawsuit.

Cryptic is using Star Trek Online as a test bed for Neverwinter technologies, not as a legitimate game. Suckers who pay for STO are not paying for the continued development of that game, but for the development of Neverwinter.

Considering how much I have spent on Dragon Age and Mass Effect stuff after I had already purchased the box off of the shelf, I don't really think it's fair to condemn Cryptic for doing much of the same thing.  Sure, subscription costs... I get it, but most of the Cryptic Store stuff can be earned in game without the use of money, and the option of purchasing extra character slots... that's not just a Cryptic issue.

Not that much would change if they did, both companies suck it hard anymore.

I dunno what you're smoking, but Atari owns Cryptic lock, stock, and barrel. Atari owns 100% of Cryptic.

This. Cryptic was owned by NCSoft and is now owned by Atari.

WOW ok well NWN is based on the City of Neverwinter, in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting for the D&D Universe. Both NWN and NWN2 use the D&D ruleset, I am not sure if the NWN on AOL did as I never played it.  In the end though NWN is a D&D IP.

Actually NCSoft didn't.  They were simply the publisher for CoX.  Cryptic was an indipendant company.  Cryptic sold CoX to NCSoft, I believe when they started work on Marvel Universe.  When Microsoft and Marvel pulled out, they swithced development to CO.  During that time Atari purchased them.

Well personally I'm still hoping Turbine wins this so Cryptic can't make another MMO, doesn't help that they are calling it OMG (what a stupid term), basically it will use the same gay engine, low quality graphics and other comical trash Cryptic is known for.

My thoughts after reading the news (in no numeric order):

    • Cryptic is getting the opportunity to make another game? Holy Shit RUN!

    • been a great ride NWN but soon you are going to become ripped off

    • forced release, low quality content

    • paying for stuff that should be FREE

    • mathematical: well known IP + Cryptic = epic fail

    • no GM support at all

Jack Emmert can try the marketing stuff all day long, Cryptics behaviour is speaking for itself.

Stupid? You can get them for free at some sites don't pay/support DLCs.

As long as people are thinking its ok to charge a monthly fee + having an item shop (with even EMOTES, gear), Cryptic will be here to say so better stop supporting them. If you are paying a monthly fee ALL stuff should be earnable ingame, because thats what you are paying for. Cryptic has created a very very bad reputation by trying to milk every dime out of their customers.

Given Champion Online and Stark Trek Online's record people aren't willing to deal with this shit.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

Does anyone know how the Hasbro vs Atari case is going?

Because as part of that Hasbro was seeking to recover the license from Atari.

If that happens, Atari and Cryptic cannot continue with D&D (which I think would be a good thing)

It would also mean that Turbine would not be able to continue with DDO... UNLESS they could negotiate a license with Hasbro.

And whether they could or not they would also be free to sue Atari again.

I jumped in with both feet at the launch of STO.  having never played CO I didn't know what I was in for, so like most others, I expected a good MMO and at least 6 months of good content until the expansion would be announced.  So, after less than a month when I reached max level and was looking around saying "what the hell is this?" I decided to cancel my subscription.  I left that game feeling violated, used and just ticked off that someone would do this to me!

To me, this will be a train wreck.  But,  I'm hoping against all hope that Cryptic has learned something, anything from the STO experience.

Cryptic, may the gods of Toril bring back Tiamat to eat you alive if you screw us again with this!

I don't think you will have to wait to long cryptic does turn out there games rather fast. will probably be out in 2011. be an incomplete piece of crap but you won't have to wait long for it.

I dont know, with all the trash games that have recently come out in the MMORPG realm perhaps this could go somewhere. Certainly can not be any worse  that what developers have done to the MMORPG world in the last couple of years.

Hasbro's case with Atari is about European publishing rights for DnD games, it may be as simple as Atari stating they will not publish through Namco Bandai in Europe any more and Hasbro will be happy. We just don't have the details.

    No.

I have a copy of the complaint (somewhere on my HD?) and it covers far more than that.

Atari gave Namco Bandai confidential info and Hasbro have proof.  There was a lot more than just publishing rights.

It also does not just cover Europe.

The origninal source was CNN Money - but that now gives a 404 error.

Edit: I found the pdf.  Its the District Court of Rhode Island CA09-610ML

Yes, it covers a lot more than distribution.

    Without going into detail (which you can find yourself) it alleges;

Breach of Contract - Confidentiality Provision

Breach of Contract - Customer Support Provision (Customer suport for D&D is to be provided by Atari - NOT a third party under the terms)

Breach of Contract - Duty to Maintain Intellectual Property

Breach of Contract - Obligation to Promote (Turbine alleged the same thing)

Breach of implied Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing ("Atari has denied that Namco Bandai has undertaken any responsibilities for the D&D property under an agreement between these parties despite overwhelming and indisputable

    evidence to the contrary.")

    Fraud

    etc etc...

I would really like to know if anyone knows ( or can find out) how this case is proceeding?

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.

Sorry but this is just another gimmick they have come up with to sell subs, third times a charm? I think not. Will be avoiding this like the plague.

Bingo.  And as far as the actual article goes:

    4) Doom? Yep

    3) Paying for everything?  Probably not, just the coolest/best items.

    2) OMG? Acronyms don't matter, the game's going to be bad whatever they call it.

    1) Could it actually work?  Not a chance.

If it's not dead/on life support 6-12 months after they have released it i'll be amazed.
