Now that surplus EXP has been explained, how many of you will be playing FFXIV?

you need an option for "still undecided".

I won't commit until I get a chance to play it for myself

That could be ages, but okay, I'll add a holdout option.

Edit: Don't see a way to add options to the poll.

I´m going to say no. Not because of the XP thing specifically but rather the sum of the whole.

All statements I make is from my point of view unless stated otherwise.

    Exactly.

In honesty, I wanted a FFXI clone.  Just reskinned.  And I would have been thrilled.

I do not like the way many of these 'features' are sounding I hear about, but I trust they will be put together in an enjoyable way.

Oh, and to pissed off metagamers and those who are unemployed and have the time for this system to even matter.....

    No one cares.

    EDIT:

If all else fails, there's still EVE.   Good ol' fall back EVE :)

The poll says otherwise to your "no one cares". And so do the FFXIV fansite forums and so does this one.

Edit: To further extrapolate on my point; it amazes me that these very forums, that spawn so many heated discussions in regards to a near unanimous agreement that we, MMO players, want more freedom and the ability to be afforded alternative methods of playstyles that are equally rewarded and viable, that so many posters would be completely copacetic with the idea of having your playtime micromanaged in a P2P MMO baffles me beyond belief.

I chose "yes" simply because I don't have anything better to play at the moment and I was hoping FFXIV would be a game that held my attention for quite some time.

I'll still buy just for the sake of giving it a go but I am not a blinded fanboy.  I will not simply bend over and continue to pay a sub for a game I can not play on my own terms.

I believe the system is in place to keep people from getting to the end game that supposedly isn't finished at the moment and will be removed shortly after launch when things are finished.  Spin it all you want with the casual bs or ps3 bs but I'm not buying the pitch.

Canceled my pre-order after playing the beta for a few days.  Just not my thing.  Now I'm watching Rift and SWTOR until GW2 comes out.

  • AldersAlders Member RarePosts: 2,207

No, but it has nothing to do with surplus.

I got what i wanted visually, but i was hoping for SE to ditch the clunky combat and movement mechanics of XI and the menu based UI.

No, but only because I'm just not into standard pve level grinders anymore.

Excluding what my impressions are during the beta, yes I'm buying it.

However it's only cause there isn't anything else out there right now and I've been MMO-less for quite a long time now.  I'm certain I'll cancel my sub once TOR or GW2 comes out.

If I understand it correctly, you get 8 hours of 100% xp gain. The next 7 hours the xp gain starts to drop and eventually hits zero. It then stays at zero on that character, not through a course of one day, but a week. After a week it resets.

This system according to the developer promotes fairness between the casual and hardcore players so that all can, in theory gain the same amount of xp per week. I know its still in beta and things can change, but if it stays I would think Square Enix lost the hard core players.

I thought about buying but what little I played in alpha testing and some in beta I havent been impressed. Now with this system in place, if it stays, it will be a definite NO on purchase.

One other thought, could it be that they know they will be lacking on content at release and this system is a way to slow you down, until they can add a respectable amount of content. This isnt to say they dont have enough content but nothing has gave me the impression that there is allot.

I don't feel that surplus exp has been explained very well just yet. Aside from the gaggle of people who are saying that it's purely bonus exp, there's still a huge question mark over how the timer runs down. Is it continue to run down while you're in passive mode? What about when you're in a town? Unknown. What happens to the exp you earned as surplus, do you benefit from it in another way? Unknown. What exactly is the deal with physical level? Unknown.

I had not preordered yet and after reading today's announcement, I'm not going to. I'll base my decision to buy or not based on what the CE preorders experience in their first week. And it really pains me to say that because I've been looking forward to this for a long time and I have had no interest in other MMOs all year long.

From what I've seen and heard....no.

I'll wait and see how it turns out after launch.

This is pretty much the only reason myself and everyone i game with are even concidering playing. I have no interest in blowing 6 months worth of  fees out of boredom though. GW2 pretty much knocked one out of the park at Gamescon and showed that dynamic content blows the notion of grind leveling out of the water.

Sqenix explained this somewhere, it's linked several times in the other threads.

Surplus exp does nothing, it just goes away.

What do you mean what's the deal with physical level? You have 2 types of exp, physical, which boosts your stats when you level and your weapon, which advances you in that job.

The timer runs resets weekly on a fixed real world clock, just like leves.

Honestly, people have little understanding of what any of this stuff is. Surplus EXP means that your get that at the end of the week and the beginning of the next, from what I read you may get it back 200% more than you would of originally gotten. That sounds pretty nice to me, I played beta and I found it to be an awesome game. From the FFXIV Core article the guy said that surplus hadn't even been implemented, only the "penalty" system--as everyone has been calling it--has. Chill out people, they're just doing it differently, they are not penalizing you for playing too long. The ignorance of the masses; read up before you start complaining! This system may actually be beneficial, and just cause you can't get to 75 in 3 days doesn't mean it's bad. With the surplus system it's going to hold you back at least a month, is that so bad? Leveling seems to go extremely fast when the EXP time is available, I got to physical level 16 in the 8 hours given to me, and 20 with the rest of the time (mostly cause I ran around exploring during that time). It's not that bad... leveling is really easy to do, even without the surplus given to you at the end of every week.

Why would I want my exp that I earned now given to me later? Will loot drops from bosses be rolled a week later too?

    Hell no.

All Square needs is another bad Final Fantasy game.

I was undecided, on the .. I'll buy it and try the 30 day it'd be worth that.

    This?

Taking a hindering mechanic and explaining it.. "Oh no, you get a BONUS."

It's like when a store marks up a price of something 30% one week and then the next advertises it as 20% off. If you fall for it, you're an idiot.

I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.

Yup and they're normally wrong just like they were with Aion, Warhammer and Age of Conan...oh wait...

Ignorance? It's not our fault if Se fail at community managemen and fail to explain what's going on when there is a uproar.

The point of the surplus is it limit the time you can play and progress in the game. Specially with a monthly fee, this thing is just stealing your money while you can't do shit ingame and can't explore the higher ground of the game until you wait X number of week for the "surplus" to add up to your lvl. Aka total bullshit.

The point you fail to see... You got to lvl 16 in 8hour with the 100% normal xp and then gaining up to 20 while the XP decreased. Now, once your xp hit 0, you cant do shit beside being stuck your lvl and skilling up other class. This is FORCING you to stay at THAT level and play THAT way in a game that you PAY a monthly fee. This is stupid in every single aspect.

So In the end, i have to wait 3month to be able to kill Dragon X in valley Y. When I could do it 2week after launch... awesome. And then, come the new player who aren't at launch. I'm buying FFXIV to play with ym friend who;s max lvl. Oh snap, it's going to take 3month before I can enjoy time with him? fuck that shit.

I saw the write up on the surplus and that did sound like what its meant to do as you have written above. My problem is I like to make many characters/classes but when I find that one I love to play I want to stick with it.

After work I usually can put in 5 hours of gaming if I want to and weekends allot more time. That means in 3 weekdays not weekends, I no longer gain xp and it goes into a surplus or reserve tank if you will. So then I have to wait 4 more days to gain that level needed so that I can use that armor I have been holding on to or gain that skill that I would like to use. Thats the real beef with this system. It hinders. Yes you get it when that weekly reset happens, but who wants to wait.
