I have to be able to swim and jump. Those two are essential to me, I don't know why, but it really bothers me when a developer decides to eliminate jumping.

I could not read much past the first page of this thread...for a couple of reasons (perhaps several, I always lose track)...
In regard to the powers in the boosters not being that great? I disagree. Seriously, Ninja Run + Sprint (Hell, Swift since odds are you are going down the Fitness pool) > other travel powers and no need to burn a couple of selectable powers for a travel power. One can argue the others, but I have no idea how anybody could argue Ninja Run is not pure awesomesauce.
Where NCsoft/Paragon lost me with CoX though, was with GR...and how it all worked out.
I did the pre-purchase earlier in the year for $29.99. It looked cool, though admittedly I did not do much research into it. As more details became available, and it was finally released...well, paying $30 for a new level 1-20 starting zone kind of left me walking funny. Oh sure, a few new costumes pieces - Demon Summoning, Kinetic Melee, Dual Pistols, and Electrical Control - the ability to go from villain to hero, etc (another slap in the face of end game all things considering how this works out)... so oh well, have bought bad games before. I was set to let it go...
...until you saw the pricing for the GR:Complete and what it included:
$39.99 includes CoH/CoV ($5.00 current value), a month ($14.99 value), and the GR item pack ($6.99 value). That comes to $26.98 in value - they paid $39.99 for GR. That means GR has a $13.01 value.
By doing the pre-purchase, I paid $29.99 for it...something with a value of $13.01.
For $10 more, they offered those that were new to the game or not one of the foolish loyal customers such as myself that did the pre-purchase...$26.98 in added value.
That is just one way to do the math.
Suppose somebody decided to subscribe to the game shortly before the release of GR, eh? They would have dropped out $19.99 for the GE or AE version.
So now they are looking at buying GR:C or GR - $39.99 or $29.99. By the mere fact that the GR:C includes a month of game time, it is cheaper than the GR version. Yet at the same time, they will be buying a second CoX Key that they do not need.
Perhaps they can give that to a friend... who will then be lured into the same mess?
NCsoft should have offered those that did the pre-purchase the option to receive the additional items in the GR:C for just $10...instead of having to pay $21.98 more for it (the month of time and the item pack).
So while feeling screwed over in the wallet, one might take a deep breath - sigh - try to relax - only to remember that they got shafted in the wallet while buying a new starting zone for level 1-20...
...and then, yes - in that little "Other" box for why you are quitting the game - you might find yourself being a little explicit.

Okay, have to admit that I did beta for CoH - enjoyed that - thought that even though the game was so limited, that I had found a fun game... I quit when they added boomboxes and the streets were full of fools standing around. I gave it some time to die down before returning. This party pack - dear MMORPG gods above...

Right there with you, I didn't wait. The Wedding Pack rubbed me wrong, especially the "You got VEATS early because we did this " nonsense. I say nonsense because there is no way that selling a few Wedding Packs enabled them to hire and train people in that time frame to speed up development. They knew they were opening a questionable door with selling costume packs, something always bundled into the free Issues, and they needed a way to sell it to the community. As soon as my fears of the door opening wider were confirmed, selling more packs w/powers, talked to my group and we all left together. Hello EVE!
That was a long time ago and they still sell these packs so there must be some measure of success. Going Rogue left me tempted to come back and overlook these packs but the lack of content (reported by others) and now another pack so soon after a paid expansion leaves a bad taste.
Glad to hear the servers are doing well but lets be honest, they just put out a paid expansion. The real test is the status of the servers in 3-6 months. They saw a nice bump with COV but it eventually died down, and as far as I can tell COV had more content.
The things they should be focused on: End game content (huge), repetitive gameplay and PVP. Yes, I know this is not a PVP game but god it's got two opposing factions and a fun combat system why wouldn't you want to draw PVPers? This also does not include keeping the game graphically update to date, that's just a given in my book.
I understand the market is changing, for the worst IMO, and MMO's want their cake and to eat it too by charging for a sub and selling in-game items. As long as a can resist those lame business practices I will, so to the OP stand by your convictions.

They should have made content that increased the level cap.
Wait, you are quiting the game not because of gameplay issues, not because of the price, not because lack of enjoyment, but because they decided to sell some purelyfluff and barely cosmetic emotes that you will probably hardly ever see?
Cash shop purist?
It sounds like they decided to want money for most of the stuff that should be included in the monthly fees to me. It might as well be the best thing to quit now before things get even more pathetic.
What kind of game takes 15 bucks and still can't afford to add emotes without extra pay?
This is even too much for Smed and that says a lot.
Not as simple as spelling I suppose. Next time you want to belittle someone using your high level of intellect; make sure your spelling is spot on. I'll correct it for you so you can study it. Next time you step up on your righteous soap box, you'll at least SOUND smart.
I always wondered about that, doesn't your browser have a spell checker included or do you guys just ignore the red lines under the words?

NCsoft and any other MMO developer is still a Business in the end.

Actually, I'm not a cash shop purist. I bought a few of the booster packs they put out because they had some pretty cool costume pieces.
You know..YOUR the reason why they keep adding more right? You purchased them. And you wonder why the put more in? Are you nuts or just plain oblivious to the world around you? You just debunk any rational argument you may of been able to produce by purchasing "a few" of the boosters. MMO's are a business first and foremost. For everyone one customer they lose, they need to gain another or find another revenue source. Cash shop is that source. Your acknowledged that dilemma and decided to help the game by means of your wallet. Now you change your mind. Fair enough, but next time you play a game that introduced cash shop(if they already aren't using it) speak only from a sub fee and not additional wallet on the side.

They can afford to include the emotes. However, they are a business and they know thousands of people will pay separately for it. So from a business standpoint it makes perfect sense. It's just friggin emotes people! CoX still kicks ass and we all know it.

Of course they are just emotes, so why charge from them at all? Just send them out in an update as a free gift, or they can be earned in game? Your "it's just emotes" can have the reverse effect you know, like someone asking the question "why are they charging for something so minuscule?". Why create ANY animosity within the community when they have a new expansion they are trying to sell and retain a growing base? They already have plenty of Booster Packs to up-sell to new customers so why not take a hiatus from creating new Packs and focus on content development to keep those new customers?
Reasons why I suppose they (and others) resort to this tactic is they don't believe they can keep those new customers, so the "business strategy" is to nickel-and-dime them before they walk. Does it work? I really don't know, we don't see the financials they have and they continue to do it. What will be interesting to watch is how quickly the surge in active accounts starts to take a rapid decline with Going Rogue Vs. COV.
Im actully thinking of getting this game, from what ive read and seen so far it seems that making a superhero is quite fun and rewarding, though i can see that people say its repetative and that the booster packs do tend to annoy people, i dont mind them that much. Just the thought of beating up badguys and flying away with that awesome character you have just created gives me a good feeling.

It is a fun game, I am not playing right now because I went to Champions Online due to the flexibility and action combat style. However, I recommend CoX as a great game, more mature in terms of content with a great community(although I hear bad rumors, that has gotten a little evil since I left), anyway if you like superhero games, you have 2 offers now and another one coming soon(DCUO).
I recently earned my 57 month veteran reward badge. That means that I weas subscribed to City of Heroes for nearly five years.
I love City of Heroes. I love being able to fly around, or jump really high, I love the different powers, the numerous amounts of costume sets, how I can make nearly any character I can imagine in the costume creator. The new Going Rogue expansion was awesome.
But I cannot, in good conscience, give Paragon Studios or NCSoft a single cent more of my money.
As of today, these guys have begun to reach Star Trek Online/Cryptic Studios level of pathetic by selling a pack of emotes.
So, I've cancelled my subscription and I'll put a huge "DO NOT BUY" stamp on the game. I recommend that everyone avoids this stinker.
OMG that guy has more emotes than meeee! IMBA! OP! GATHER THE ARMIESS! I can't stand this sacriledge! I quit!
Thats good to hear, im going to get it soon. I just cant wait to see what DC is going to bring to the table, if its the same as other superhero games then meh.
Wow...the OP didn't deserve any of the hate he got. Honestly I understand how he feels entirely! I hate how pay to play games are now charging for "fluff" items. I'm sorry but not everyone plays just to battle etc. Some people actually like to roleplay! Hence..mmorpg and not just mmog. By selling emotes or costumes, you are forcing a roleplayer to buy these items in order to fully immerse himself/herself in the game world (or at least to take away that annoying feeling of the "must have that item" feeling).
I thought that gamers pay a monthly fee to help maintain AND develop the game. Updates/Expansions/etc. should really come for free. The purpose of expansion packs and fluff items is to keep their population interested in the game. Okay, I'll even give in to the notion that expansion packs should be a seperate payment, but it should include all the fluff items that they have developed.
I don't know, I guess I'm just a little jaded as to how the MMORPG world has evolved. There is less and less involvement from the devs and GM's. I miss the days when GM's are actually there to monitor the chatroom and make sure no one is getting harassed or no spammers are left unpunished (applies to ALL mmos out there right now). I miss how there was actually a sense of adventure and immersement in games and you played a game to have a FANTASY world...not an ****ing mall.
I will only accept microtransaction in mmos that have exp potions etc. I just think that whatever is availabe in the item mall, should be readily available in game as well, even if it's hard to attain. But that's just me and it's my $$ that I am using the way I want to use it right?
They should have made content that increased the level cap.
No. We've seen, over and over and in game after game, what happens when they jack up the cap. The older "cap" content is automatically downgraded and gets less play. It's almost a reduction in total content and also promotes an endless treadmill of "bigger and better!" items, reducing the desirablity of the existing items. Thank heavens CoX has thus far resisted that foolish trend.

Seems like a silly reason to quit a game that you enjoy playing. If EVE started with selling emotes I wouldn't blink an eye.
Or to put it another way....
Stick your hand in a pail of water.
Now pull it out again?
Not seeing much difference?
Same with you cancelling your sub.

What kind of game takes 15 bucks and still can't afford to add emotes without extra pay?
This is even too much for Smed and that says a lot.

--end rant---
