And this is why I don't get particularly excited about mmo launches anymore, or let myself get drawn into the anticipation and excitment.  It's like lately every mmo that launches has to do something stupid to screw it up.

The game looks beautiful.  Characters are nicely done, although there are not a lot of customization options.  Animations are also well done.  I love some of the emotes, very cute.  Contrary to what some have said, I have noticed no performance problems or lag, atleast so far.  Nothing wrong with how my mouse moves on my screen.

But the UI sucks.  NGE Star Wars Galaxies moveover.

It's hard to get past this to see any other aspect of the game.  The UI is how you as the gamer interact with the game world.  It's definitely on the short list of most important aspects of a game.  Who designed this crap?  What planet are you from?  Or what continent?

Today I saw a very cute, cuddly looking lemur creature and decided to kill it because I was getting bored running down the narrow corridor that passes for a world.  Well, the lemur kicked my ass, and then I died.  Then I waited.  Waited.  Waiting.....hmmmm....start pushing keys.  Nothing.  Look in the menu.  Nothing.  Search help topics of most frequently asked questions.  Nothing.   This is the best you could do SE?  Really?

I hope you go out of business and SOE buys you out.  Even Smedley could come up with better.

    LOL

You're gonna get raided by the fanboys.

I really don't understand why they designed the game this way either. The interface doesn't bug me so much...becuase I've played FFXI and am used to minimalistic interfaces (spelling, I don't care), but.....WTFBBQ @ CONTROLS AND LAG

I live to go faster...or die trying.

In you menu there is a thing called RETURN... I can respect your dislike for the game. The UI takes a little getting used to. SE try's to make everything new and their own and I can see where the frustration lays. I will have to disagree with your hatred toward the game. I had a enjoyable experience during beta, all the glitches were expected. When beta testing anything whether it is Open or closed or whatever, it should still be taken with a grain of salt you have to expect annoying mishaps here and there.

It's not that the UI is different, it's that it is SLOW AS HELL. It is unacceptable in 2010 to add something to an action bar, and it take up to 5 seconds. And no, its not my comp or internet connection. Both are waaaaaaaaaaay past requirements.

  • mcvfxxmcvfxx Member UncommonPosts: 59

Exactly the same experience with little cute squirrel, except that this one kicked my butt in less than 20sec. I figured out, after starring at screen for few mintes and realizing my char is not going to get up without any help, that there is a Return option in the menu which basically resurrects char. Not that I understand logic of that, but well.

I tried to get a friend into this game and I like graphics, movement of chars (feels alive like AoC), but menu is clumpsy and hard to use. It took minutes to find my weapon and even more to distribute some points. Still did not realized bunch of things as there is no lead to some info, hopefully official version will be more informative.

Lets say this title is not going to be blockbuster title, it will appeal to quite few people, even hardcore XI players will probably not accept it for the nostalgy they feel with older title. Anyway, I hoped for more life like in Vindictus or GW2 demonstrations, but cannot find it in this game. FF XIV is not that bad game, still feels much better than many F2P asian games, but it cannot give me a reason to pay 60$ + 15$ per month while fighting menu and character control. Maybe I am getting old.

  • Major69er1Major69er1 Member UncommonPosts: 133

Heh you have to click on menu like 6 times just to figure out wtf your doing next with just one quest. and lets not even talk about the one quest you get when you first get in wtf is the emote bullshit i spent hour at least trying to figure out the right emote for the dancing. This game sux !I had high hope but will cancel preorder after OB.

So I take it they had a cb for this game, did they not listen to the testers feedback?

I think the reason it took 5 seconds for the ability to load was due to server lag. Open beta is a stress test after all and a large amount of lag is to be expected and as far as i've seen the lag has been very minimal considering.

But like someone said it did take a long time for the ability to load and it seemed, at least for me, that it took a very long time to get through the menus. I blame this on the lag though and will not put this as a fault until the game actually releases and the lag isnt much of an issue anymore.

And I am no fanboy but in my opinion the interface isn that bad, but like op said having to enter the menu and hit return just to respawn is somewhat annoying it didnt really bother me once I got a good idea of how it worked.

The whole menu system they used is a fairly standard Final Fantasy system and is very familiar, which is what I think they were going for.

Is this lag everyone keeps talking about, server lag by chance? Anyone from CB that could confirm whether or not this is the case?

I must say the main complaints about this game, are starting to sound an awful lot like the complaints I heard when EQ2 entered OB. System requirments to high, servers stressing hard, etc...Also a quick question, is this game heavily CPU based, and not taking advantage of more powerful GFX cards and VRAM?

@ OP, clunky interfaces and slow game-play are exactly why I have a distaste for SE games.

The UI is completely designed for controller usage and really makes using a mouse and keyboard a royal pain in the arse.

I did hate the input lag. Slotting skills, moving between menus and even moving through vendor windows always had a delay with them. Im not sure if it was just related to server lag, or is just a design in the game, but it was overly annoying to navigate menus when I knew it was going to be a slow process.

While this is an "open beta" the fact is open betas are not really for testing gameplay mechanics or design. They are a tool to both stress test the servers and act as a free way to market the game to potential players just before the game is released.

The game overall isnt bad, its an enjoyable experience especially for Final Fantasy fans. However, I can see the UI being a big turnoff for a lot of people.

I do believe it's CPU based,  at least that is what I saw in another thread where someone posted there quad core cpu load while running the game.  Not sure about GFX useage.

It uses the gpu to the max. Im looking at the usage now on my Ati 5870 and it is hitting 100 percent usage and only 16-20% on cpu on a i7 920 @ 4.0

The game is pretty user unfriendly.

What I don't know how to do is EAT FOOD in the game. I've seen people do it but I have no idea how. Seems like there should be a use item option but hell if I know.

Again, its a console user interface shoved into the pc . It is like trying to fit a square box into a circle, it doesn't work. People will be forced to use a controller because that is what this user interface is being designed for.  Sounds to me like the pc version is a guinea pig for the console version. If SE loves the console interface so much then they should find a way to put this game on the Xbox 360 instead of the pc. Then some say well I see no problem with making a pc game and forcing players to use a controller. I say, when do you ever see a developer design a game for the pc with the controller in mind, NONE except Square Enix uses this method of thinking.

I think that was my post lol, but  I am running a lower end card in the geforce 9800gtx/9800gtx+. I think my Q 6600 was picking up the slack on my card which doesnt seem to be optimized for FFXIV yet. This is the first game or program to actually abuse it the way it did. I have been running everything up until this point without a hitch.

Well... the interface is ass for a mouse and keyboard. Seriously ass, and I've played just about every major game since legends of kesmai (on aol) and meridian 59. I enjoy the game play, I like the system of physical level and class level and the pseudo-skills based system, the world is great looking the sound is pretty fair musically speaking (but who doesn't mute it) and spectacular for world sounds. The interface is unacceptably bad. Currently "turn left" and "strafe left" do the same thing and key configuration doesn't work right... at a bare minimum those two items need fixed before launch. Furthermore the interface is a closer reflection of PSO or FFXI than it is of a modern MMO. It's absolute trash compared to wow, eq2, rom, aoc, etc, hell, honestly, based on the numbers of clicks through the menu I need to do ANYTHING, I'd rather honestly have EQ1's interface... or AC1... AC2... DAOC... pretty much ANYTHING except champions online which had perhaps the worst interface known to man. Although, I'm more okay with a crap default interface if the rumors of lua integration for addons bear fruit... but I have real doubts there with them being unable to keep the ps3 on a level playing field with pc unfortunately.

Will I buy the game? Yeap. I need a change from all the wow level based systems with no variety or true customization available... but god i hope they improve the interface for mouse and keyboard or make addons possible so others can fix it for them. Another ffxi interface is NOT acceptable.

Yes I too was hyped about the game but alas too many problems and silly controls.

Based on 1520 total votes.  You hyped Final Fantasy XIV a 1.0

And now its slipped out of the most hyped games ..... I hope they learn something from all of this.

The fans will still like it ofc.

This is THE WORST beta i have EVER been in, not only did it take 12 hours to download, and 2 hours to get the downloader working, but now i cant even play the game cuase the client crashes upon startup. good job Square enix, you lost me as a loyal customer.

I am SO glad this beta is weeding out the whiny folks and close minded so called "gamers" who can't stand to use controllers on PCs or who don't like not jumping in a game, or who can't understand its FRIGGING BETA!!!!!. This will make the community IDEAL and actually mature and not filled with emo 1333 speak. THank you, SE. This Open Beta is pissing off people who think everyone should do everything they do or have ever done. I love it!

On the screen there is a little backpack on the bottom right, click that and it should open up anything you can eat. I tried it a couple times and after i eat it seems to tell me if i like something or not and says i have a full belly affect. I have no clue what this does yet but I will keep playing with it.

I have my complaints about the game but seriously? Is this your first beta ever? They don't work, they break 30 ways to sunday, they often have serious issues that result in them being unplayable (mumbles and most of them take those same issues into the first month or so of launch.) This is normal crap. Try again next week, guess you were unlucky this week. *shrug*

As an aside... If all it took was a beta non-production ready game being made freely available while they clean up additional issues was all it took to make you abandon the company how loyal were you in the first place? lol. Although, I don't advocate brand loyalty, that's stupid. What sucks, sucks. What's good is good. It doesn't matter who made it, every company can come out with an epic and every company can come out with a stinker, spend less time on the bandwagon and more time thinking for yourself.

The UI is horrible, it took me ages to work out how to get into combat and then how to get out of it lol. It too me ages to work out how to respawn, I was asking in chat but noone replied cause everyone is off soloing. Frigging you never know where to go and wonder why it keeps warping you back if you try to run off.... it's an MMO I don't want to do these lame quests, I want freedom.

So far I have not seen and real "Issues" with the game itself. Yes there is LAG with everything as to be expected with stress testing the servers - it will be an issue if its the same at release but thats yet to be seen. And they have said that content is very limited as they don't want to give everything away. OB is stress testing - they need some way to know how many they can throw on 1 server at a time and this is the only way.

Its just different - and people are viewing these differences as problems with the game. If you dont like it, fine. Dont play. But I think its a bit unfair saying its a issue because its not to your likings.

Im still undecided myself, as I am not a console person, but the game is definately a console game on PC. But It has not issues to fix - good OB so far.

I've been in worst beta's before, as in games in worst shape during beta. The problem is, that LAG issue may not actually be fixed if they keep the servers in Japan. SE has some of the worst feedback to players I have ever seen. Patching issues, lag, control issues... all that can be tolerated in a beta but most companies actually talk to their potential customers about what they are doing. Problems with the UI are not going to be fixed before release. They simply don't have the time. FFXI fanbois will scream until their lungs pop out that there is nothing wrong with the UI, but that doesn't change the fact that anyone on a PC expecting to use a mouse and KB, standard inputs for a PC, is going to encounter an obtuse and slow menu system.
