If I recall correctly, Aion and L2 had servers separated by region. FFXI doesn't, and neither will FFXIV. So, all regions are playing together on the same servers... thus it's far more likely that you will find yourself grouped with Japanese, or French or German players. In those cases, yes, the autotranslate function proves very helpful.
And I agree that Japanese players I've had the good fortune to group with are much more laid back than most Western players I've grouped with.
I dont recall FFXI being a massive success which it isnt, not saying its not gonna keep going, L2 is still going regardless. More attention brings more money which equates to more content, its business 101, games like L2 and AION clearly lack an edge when it comes to funding and development and that really comes down to how popular it is. Its not gonna die I just wouldnt expect it to be a major thing.
In my opinion this game is going to be over shadowed by a lot of the future releases considering how it is now.
FFXI maintained ~500,000 players and 32 servers up to 7 years after its launch. They only did their first server merge a few months back and still have more active servers than some of the newer MMOs have had within their first year. It was the 4th most populated Pay-to-Play MMO for much of that time and has been highly profitable for SE.
I would say that's a very successful product by any measure, fan of the franchise or not.
But then, go ask Mythic if they would scoff at being able to boast those numbers after only 7 months of WAR being live... much less 7 years. Ask Turbine what they'd think about having those numbers in LoTRO or DDO as a P2P MMO... Ask Funcom what they'd think of having a dedicated playerbase of that size for that long in AOC or AO...
By all rights, FFXI has flown in the face of what many forum-goers insist is "necessary" for a MMO to be successful... "casual friendly", "faster leveling" and "fewer t ime-sinks" being among them. It also has other aspects that, according to many pro-casual proponents, should have sunk XI like a boat anchor in WoW's wake... steeper learning curve, aging graphics... It doesn't have swimming. It doesn't have jumping. It's highly menu-driven. On a check list of what many forum-goers claim are "must haves" for a "successful, modern, casual-friendly MMO", FFXI would seem to fail on all accounts. Yet, most all the MMOs that boast those "must haves" don't match XI's population numbers...
So why is that?
Intuitively speaking, seems to me SE did something very right with FFXI. They established the kind of experience they wanted FFXI to be, and then stuck to that. Unlike many developers these days, SE didn't try to "cater to everyone" by attempting to make the game "everything to everyone". I'm sure there's a lesson in there.
Coming back to FFXIV.. All SE needs to do is target and capture a core playerbase like they did with XI, continue to cater to that core playerbase, stay true to the experience they want XIV to be and not waiver... and they'll do fine.
By the by, Aion and L2 are still quite popular in their core Eastern markets. The Western Market was never the core market for either of those games. NC gave us a bit of a nod with Aion - much moreso than with L2. But there should be no illusion that us Westerners were ever the core market they were trying to capture.

Melodrama? Really, that wasn't even my intention. I'm over the issues with the UI as I've figured them out already. That is, however, clearly not the entire point I was making, and it seemed to completely elude you. The fact of the matter is, it's 2010, mmorpgs have been developed for over a decade and there are just certain things that most gamers come to expect in terms of polish and intuitiveness. If a company can't even live up to the simplest of standards regarding a user interface, why should I believe they won't half ass everything else? Like I said before, it's just bad, lazy design, and although some apparently aren't bothered in the slightest by a cumbersome UI (You, for example), that doesn't mean the majority feels the same way. It's a simple thing to streamline, so why not do it? There's just no excuse.
Anyway, I'm done talking about this; I've seen you post before and I always figured you to be a level-headed person, but judging by your attempts to flame perfectly legitimate criticism without a better counter argument than, "It's just takes a few more seconds to do everything, figure it out, get over it.", I'm inclined to change my opinion.
The 10 year old things "that most gamers come to expect" are what most of us who really like FFXIV want desperately to avoid. My sympathy to all those who are constantly complaining that this isn't another cookie cutter MMO. But as I've said before there are plenty of those out there so anyone who feels that way should just move on. We seriously don't want SE to listen to all the people who want another no-brainer MMO. The UI is fine! I'm not saying it's perfect or can't be improved. But most of the people whining sound like they haven't even tried to learn the UI. They want it made easy for them so they don't need to think. Many complaints I've read would have been answered if the complainer had just gone to the beta site and download the keyboard schematics. There are 2, one for first person view and one for third person view.
So fair warning, this is going to become an elitist game very quickly. Not the type for 'hardcore' keyboard punchers who love games that challenge teenagers' reaction times. This game, for American fans, will be elitist because we will view it as the MMO for people who are willing and know how to use their brains. Because you can't play it mindlessly like you can the other games out there because they all function the same way. And since we know this game will be carried easily by the Japanese market we will be happy to see NA players leave who can't handle the need to work at a game but just want to spend 100+ hours a month doing the same things every gamer has done for the last decade.
There were so many people playing at 3 am this morning I couldn't do my quests without bumping into tons of other players. And since we are all playing just fine with the UI, when people complain about the UI being too terrible to use what we really hear is the game is just too hard for them because they would need to think and learn new methods. For those people, I'm not saying they should leave. I'm just saying if you aren't willing to try learning new things (OB has only been going a few days) then we don't care if you do leave. This game is for fans of FFXIV which is launching in 2010. It's not designed for fans of WoW, War, EVE, and all the others.
Geez, you guys seem to just defend for the sake of defending;
... lol?
What you should have said was "people complain for the sake of complaining".
And if you notice... I agreed that a pop-up window would be helpful and a good idea. However, the reaction some are having to it - along with other aspects of the interface that require maybe 1 or 2 extra seconds to perform at most - is way over the top and drama-queen nerd-raging in its purest form.

At the end of the day, what you're ranting about is *one extra keypress* that takes .5 seconds to execute. That's *it*. Whether it's on a pop-up screen, or in a menu makes no difference... It's *one extra keypress*.
When they have entire game systems to develop, implement, bug-fix and balance, I don't think "oh noez, people will be upset if we make them press one extra key" is something that's very high on SE's "must do" list, nor should it be... as much as I'm sure that will disappoint some around here.
Thank you, though, for providing a perfect example of the melodrama I referred to in my last post. You demonstrated it beautifully.

But here's the thing...
To me the interface is intuitive. It took me about an hour in all to learn and commit all the basics, and the more advanced aspects of it to muscle memory. Since then I've had no more trouble with it than I've had with any other interface, new or otherwise. That's whether I'm playing with mouse/keyboard, gamepad or keyboard only.
There is no "standard" of how an interface should be developed. That other companies tend to copy interfaces from other games is simply that... copying from other games. That doesn't make them a "standard". I also find it kinda funny, as an aside, that in every MMO where the interface is the same as a certain other one (we can all guess which one...) you end up with threads full of "OMG WoW clone! Fail!"
So SE creates a game with an interface that, yes, has to be friendly and usable by console players and, so, makes some concessions in how things are done. Yes, horror of horrors, PC users need to make a few extra keystrokes... and you end up with a wave of people having aneurisms over it.
Go with what people expect basd on other games, and they "fail" for making it "too much of a clone". Do something different, out of necessity if nothing else, and they "fail" for not making it similar enough. I guess a developer is screwed no matter what they do.
At the end of the day, it boils down to people having to learn something a bit different than what they're used to.
That said, allow me to reiterate one more time, so maybe you'll grasp it: I *AGREE* that having a pop-up window would be useful - that is not my argument. Anything that makes interaction a little faster/easier is of course a good thing.
My argument is against those making it sound like the game is putting them through some kind of heinous torture by requiring them to spend maybe 1 extra second pressing 1 more button.
In other words: People are hysterically over-reacting to a very minor thing.
As for your last paragraph... If that was intended as a personal jab, that I've somehow "let you down" or something because my opinion is different than yours... Nothing personal, but I really don't care. My opinion is my opinion, and I don't require anyone's "approval" of it, or me, to voice it.

This is the only thing in your post i agree with. I was one of those elitists in XI that thought the same way as you. It took me 6 years and an open mind to step away and look at the big picture to realize i was wrong. Sure we were better groupers but that was out of necessity more than anything.
The only difference is that we had to figure out formulas and mechanics on our own instead of a program telling us. I'm not sure how that aspect makes one person more intelligent than the next in game if both outcomes are used similarly. We did it the hard way because we had to, not because we were better.
And yeah, i absolutely love international server. Doesn't matter what time of day it is, there's always people on to do something.

Someone is a rampant fanboy. lol
And what exactly is this comment for? Really, it is needed because? Thier comments were constructive, yours nothing more than trollish. It is drama to say the least that people are complaining about some of the things they are. I have met plenty who say thier is no content, but when you ask them if they finished thier starting story line quests they come back with 'huh?!?'. This return pop up box, hahah its just so sad its become funny already. You really do not need to be prompted at every turn to be able to enjoy a game, and if you do its time you got out a bit more. I'm sorry, but in real life you dont get prompted for every action you do, or do you???? Someone there to tell you how to do everything in life, before you have to do it?? Yeah, this drama is too much...rampant fanboi....think more likely rampant troll trying to bait another poster and should be reported for breaking the rules of conduct.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)

SE is following one simple principle and to explain it I'd like to quote Bill Cosby:
"I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody."
