Short Answer: You're an idiot and have no idea what you're talking about
Long Answer: You NEVER stop gaining XP; you merely stop gaining BONUS XP... and you're still an idiot.
-------------------------------------------
For 8 hours you are gaining 100% BONUS XP + Regular XP
For 7 hours after the initial 8 you are gaining diminishing return values of the BONUS XP + regular XP until finally after 7 hours you lose the BONUS XP all together and only gain regular XP from that moment on.
----------------------------------------------
You also need to remember this does not carry over from job to job, if you spread out your playing from combat classes to crafting classes I doubt you’ll ever actually reach what is known as surplus.
STOP SPREADING FALSE INFORMATION.
Actually your information is false.
8 Hours you get 100% exp, for the next 7 hours you do get diminishing returns until you get 0 EXP. But during those 7 hours all the lost exp goes towards your bonus exp pool. Which has no known use at this time until they release the info about it.
You are correct each class has its own timer, but your Character level exp timer is not reset by changing classes.
Void is correct. After 15 hours of play, you will not be able to progress your character or class. You can only progress a different class, and the details on even this are murky.
I've adored FF since childhood, and by extension Square. Who would've thought my foray in FFXIV would uncover how fail SE has become today.
This isn't true. I've already put in 15 hours in open beta so far and I still am gaining xp.
It's based on how much exp they expect you to gain in that time, not actually off of time.
The 8 hours is also not actually based on time. It is based on the amount of exp that they estimate that a player would get in 8 hrs of combat. So it take much longer than 8 actual hours to get to your exp limit. It also regenerates over time so if you do things that don't gain you exp like just running around and exploring you will be earning time back as you go.
Not saying I am not disappointed with the system but it will take longer to hit the ceiling than it at first seems.
What is bugging me much more is the 8 guildleve limit in an 48 hr time frame. That blows. Guildleves are fun.
Why just play the game? Of course, I amd saying this because I actually started playing FF from the very first one. Final Fantasy is a pioneer in the RPG (That stands for "Role Playing Game" for all you "in a hury to get to level 100 TODAY!" young gamers.) industry. It is one of the biggest reasons why MMO period are possable today. Final Fantasy was "NEVER" about leveling or fancy gear, etc.. If you've ever played any of the original Final Fantasies, you'd realize that eryone of them was about the human condition and how we as people alwayssee to spend everyday of our lives running either to ourselves or away from ourselves. And in the end, none of it is ever what it seems. Just play the game for the story and the immersion. Forget about levels, uber gear, phat lewt, or any of that other nonsense. Just, be the ball, so to speak.
Edit: I meant to say "Why not just play the game?" instead of "Why just play the game?"
Why open a brand new thread to argue about this mechanic when there are already a few very long threads about it on this site?
Meh...free roam.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

If you've played even one MMO in your life, you'll realize that there are various segments in the MMO market. Greatly simplifying, there are the immersion seeking players who tend to be more casual and more RP oriented, and there are the min-maxers. They enjoy the MMOs they play in different ways. Don't prescribe your personal style to others.

I know were you are coming from i got a nes on my 3rd Bday and Final fantasy was the game i got with it. not mario not duck hunt FF with the warrior of light. And i dont care about getting to max level the reason i want to do it so fast is cuz i want to know the story i want to be taken in and learn to love characters and hate others. Gear i dont care it makes it fun to try and boost stats and everyone likes to walk around in the most bad ass armor, but they story is what does it for me, and i cant do the story except for every 10 ranks and with a limit on how much I can rank up its going to take me a LOOOOONG time to see this story to the point were it will be like when you played half way threw an old FF then have to put it down for a few months then coming back and feeling like you are lost and have the desire just to start over. BUT WITH THE OLD ONES THAT ACTUALLY WASNT THAT BAD!
People should be figuring out by now that this looks like it's going to be a complicated game. It's not going to be a 'run to the guy with ! over his head and just keep killing' type of game. You need to watch your skill point thresholds, you XP thresholds, and you need to understand the activities that recharge them and the ones that don't and arrange your activity to maximize productivity in the different area of concentration. You'll need to understand the 48 hour timer on guildleves and how to bypass that through party quests and then manage group activity so everyone can benefit.
This game will not be for everyone. I think that's a good thing.
Much of it has to do with the fact that several Asian countries want limits put on the amount of gaming done per day due to some of the issues that have risen. Square-Enix is probably doing this in an attempt to look good to said countries... and also giving an added side effect that people in the countries without such limits will not rush ahead of the players from countries with said limitations.
Now look at everything that has happened with people due to their inability to control their own gaming habits... let's check out the lack of self-control in the world, shall we?
And now we have people suing gaming companies because they lack the self-discipline to exit the game and have a real life. Think I'm kidding... asking NC Soft:
This is why games are starting to put limiters on the game. The idea is that if you hit a point where you can't progress, you'll exit the game and do something else. The reason for the addtion to fatigue is due to the lack of self-discipline in modern day gamers. Go out, enjoy the outside... or better yet, the arms of a man or woman (depending on your preference).
if he was there for phase 1 he can post i. i didnt come in untill alpha 6 and i can still post
Can you shed some light into what's going on in those official forums for those of us who have no access to it? Are people complaining about this EXP mechanic? Do people want hardware mouse? etc....
This part of the interview is what the people who think the mechanic is base on a time limit need to read......
For the first eight thresholds during this week-long period, players will receive skill/experience points at the maximum rate possible. The actual amount of time spent reaching these thresholds is not significant. That is to say, a player who exceeds eight hours of gameplay will still be rewarded the maximum amount of skill/experience points, so long as the total amount earned is below the eighth threshold value. For the subsequent seven thresholds, players will earn skill/experience points at a gradually decreasing rate, eventually reaching a rate of zero.
I've asked this question before with answer and I'll ask it again....... How many people here can honestly say they've straight grinded experience ( and nothing else ) from log in to log out in any MMO?
if he was there for phase 1 he can post i. i didnt come in untill alpha 6 and i can still post

Bascially exectly the same things as here. People aren't happy their either. There's segmented feedback threads, where people just post with no idea if they are actually being read. As the communication is next to zero.
you know Everquest got bombed for this. some man shot himself over that game...... even skipped his moms funeral for a raid...... The family sued the shit out of them and won. hence the warning at the beginning of the game and also in FFXI "this game is highly addictive use discression".... as long as they have that warning they're immune to law suits... NCsoft does not... neither does world of warcraft so they set themselves up for failure, seems a warning is a lot more efficient then a couple 1000 in paid time coding restrictions in a game... seriously give me the grand and i will write the warning
"warning this game is highly addictive, please don't forget your personal lives, also please check once in a while to make sure the earth is indeed still spinning. Use the restroom normally, and for god sakes man, put on some pants... jesus, as for the lady players on that last statement , hello~"

Thanks Grapevine for the insight. Well, here's hoping for that miracle patch at release.

I just think its stupid this is how bad our world has gotten. People refuse to take responsibility for themselves... I play a lot of games and I still manage to maintain a pretty big social life including spiritual activities, tabletop gaming, a full time job, and my chores around my house.
Seriously, all these judges are doing is encouraging people to not take responsibility for themselves... then again, it encourages the idea that big brother government is a good idea... now I'll shut up since that's a whole other discussion not fit for these forums.
Actually it wouldn't suprise me if that is one of the reasons for the fatigue systems. There has been some extremely bad cases of personal neglect in Asia over MMOs.
Well lookie here, another missinformed person basing thier wild opinions off of other peoples wild opinions. Here is the skinny on the surplus as it stands in open beta right now (unless someone can prove me wrong I'm going to go with what I know first hand from actually doing it myself).
First day in Open Beta - created a character, thermaturgist, leveled to physical level 11 and therm level 8 in one day - NOT A SINGLE POINT OF SURPLUS the entire time.
Second day in Open Beta - played first day character again, leveled to physical level 14 and conjurer to level 8 - again NOT A SINNGLE POINT OF SURPLUS the entire time.
Third day in Open Beta - created a new character, botanist, leveled to physical level 13, botanist lvl 9, weaver level 7 - again NOT A SINGLE POINT OF SURPLUS the entire time.
On top of that, 2 of those days were 14+ hour gaming sessions, and still, no loss of xp, no surplus xp, no changing classes for well over 8 hours at a time on day 1 and day 2.
So, in summary, as I said before I am going to go with what I know first hand until someone proves me wrong. Anyone is welcome to go play the game themselves and try and force surplus to kick in so you can take a screen shot and put it out here to support your side of the story (sorry, cann't provide any screen shots showing it never happened, because it never did for me to take a screenie of). Everyone is also allowed to keep drumming up the old surplus/time limit on xp thing as long as you like though, you will be wrong, but you can do as you please.

1. They don't have content, and hence don't want people progressing too quickly to find out there's no content.
2. They want to milk your $13/mo while rationing you your play time for shitz and giggles.
TBH I can't see this affecting casual players. I've been playing it pretty steady and it hasn't affected my gameplay.
If you wear a diaper and play 24/7 then I can see a problem.

WTH you telling us this shit for go post on FF14 beta forums and get flamed there . Maybe then SE may see your sadness.
I'm assuming you mean http://dev-na.ffxiv.com? SE does not allow anyone to register for their forums, because they don't want anyone posting anything.

Why did I run out of Lancer experience at Lancer rank 5 then? o.O
Also did you just grind the crap out of mobs to get a higher level or did you find more quests / guildleves? Just curious.
