Weapon and armor upgrades at the moment seem to be through the crafting system only, or via drops. What's that? Crafting is actually useful in an MMO?! No wai!
Funny thing is its the worst designed most laggy crafting system I've ever seen. Have you actually tried to craft something?
First you have to guess which components and the exact quantity make the base materials. Second you have to quess which base materials and the exact quantity of them craft an item which you have to guess what it will be, shirt, hat, ect.
Try doing all that while its taking 5-10 seconds to add one material.
No thanks.
Game will be dead after the free month I'm afraid.
They have websites you can visit to grab some of the recipes.
The crafting system is fairly laggy though. Hopefully they have it optimized by launch.
My biggest complaint about the crafting system is that you have to level 3 or 4 different jobs to make a weapon.
Yes different skills are neccesary to make great things. Its complex but not impossible. Some will say its tedious, some will say it adds to immersion and a sense of accomplishment. If you think its tedious, i am sorry to hear it.
I love snails. I love every kinda snail. I just want to hug them all, but I cant. Cant hug every snail.

ehm wait i got an idea: you go on this server on the free month... you know that one in pink: click to enlarge
and we shall have fun on the other servers. so little snacks like you can relax and bitch about everything while we accomplish something.. tested beta today first time in OB it's laggy it's the same al over again but i had friends from ffxi with me and it was a blast! it has never been this good.
Yes, there will be alot of guessing and exploration in everything not just crafting. Crafting will put a very large capital letter emphasis on PLAYER DRIVEN ECONOMY. I admit RMT and the subcraft limit/burden in FFXI hurt the crafting economy. But it was 100% player driven. Also with no durability in place some old crafts became obsolete. But FFXIV has durability.
Recipes had to be studied, practiced, and documented in that's right, you guessed it a player driven wikia. Where other crafters could reference recipes or share crafting stories. Then later on some bright chap invented a place called FFXIAH. Where crafters and consumers alike could track sales and purchases and see the direction of the economy.
If SE doesn't create a robust retainer search system some third party will just as they did in FFXI. But I will agree that some actions have too many steps. The game may not even approach WoW in terms of sales. But this game won't fail no sir. I hope it will be more streamlined than it currently is. The community is what kept 11 alive. And it will do the same here, even if the game doesn't top sale charts due to limited hand holding. A Sandbox economy.

Not just great things. Just to make a bronze axe you need 3 or 4 different jobs. Plus 2 gathering jobs.
You know what is funny. In early beta they had more weapons and armors available from NPC's. Now that crafting is fully in they have taken them out, and for good reason. They are trying to make a completely player driven economy with inter woven crafting, retairners, and companies that can create and market anything in the game. It is crazy impressive how much stuff there is too because of their armor morphing system. You should check it out here:
Thx for the video which is extremely interesting. However: If it's true that they want the economy to be purely player-driven, why are there not even the simplest tools in place to make it actually happen? Why no auction house? Why no tradechannel? Why is there no way to determine, what item is worth crafting and what is junk? How are they expecting us to monitor the constant shifting in supply and demand which is the core of a player driven economy? I'm really interested in the logic behind this.
Purely player-driven economy is a very hard thing to do right and as of today there is only one game where this works as intended: Eve. Every other attempt (incl. FF XI) failed miserably because of inflation, which will spread like wildfire as soon as the goldsellers come in (and they will be there from day one). So again: How do they plan to pull it off without even the most basic of tools? Please i don't want to bash, i'm just wondering.
I dunno what your thinking, dont want a trade channel full of spamming fools trying to sell thier trash. And an AH, well I'ld actually prefer not. I may bein the minority, but I like the retainer/marketplace idea so far. Set my guy up in a booth, payed my 500 gil for the 24 hrs, put my 8 straw hats on for 2500gil/ea, and came back today 20k richer (well minus the minor 1% fee of course). Not to mention its sweet having a personal bank with my retainer. He holds 80 stacks just like I do, and not all of them are for selling.
As for the player driven economy, I think it is going to be just fine. The mob grinding fools will actually have to take some time to come visit us crafting fools once in a while to give us thier hard earned cash for our dapper doo duds. And we will have to spend some time to go spend all our hard earned cash on a pint or two at the pub. Great system if ya ask me.

Hey hey, some of us are crafter first type people. I personally like the idea that not every weapon swinging foo out there can/or will take the time to do the complex crafts. It creates a market for people like me who will. If everyone could easily craft all thier own gear then there would be no market for crafted good as everyone would always have everythign they want. You want a nice shiney axe and your dont want to do all thats required to make it yourself, fine, just come see me and we will talk price.

Do you think come live people are going to sell materials, Components?
Once the game gets going crafters will no doubt make linkshells and swap communities to help fuel their materialsand make their items, they will make deals and sort out arrangements just like the real market world and they will have no issues with this system.

It sounds good but in practice its a pain in the ass. There are 8 wards. Each one could have 100 + retainers. At least in open beta most of them are selling junk. You could spend hours just looking through them all and not finding anything useful.

No, I made a hat though. It had crappy stats and took me 3 hours and all my mats since starting ob to figure it out and make it.
So. all in all bout 25 hours of grinding in a system that gimps you for grinding and 3 hours trying to work out how to make something in a laggy interface for 1 crap hat.

Because that game practically requires the use of 3rd party UIs to play it (well until Blizzard can steal the idea and add it into thier game as an 'original idea'. And if you never used Thotbot or WoWhead or Ahlakazam, or... yeah you get my point. Big boy on the block must be a bad design as quoted above.

People are so full of shit, complaining about using third party sites in game... Allakazam, curse gaming, thottbot, most database sites wouldnt even exist if anyone actually had a problem doing this.
Most gamers, real ones anyway have been doing this for YEARS, fansites do this, forums do this, this is all normal, i dont understand why people make it seem as though Square is doing some foreign idea, and is being lazy because they are going to embrace their fansites and give them the role of rallying the community. WHICH they were going to do anyway.
Do you think if it was in game, people still wouldnt put it up on a third party database site? WoW isnt even a hard game to figure out and it has thousands of database/fansites dedicated to it.
The crafting system had to be a challenge, there are 8 classes based soley around levleing these classes, they dont fight monsters, they dont leave town 90% of the time, what do they do? They craft, if crafting was super easy, one click auto create 100 items, afk for 3 hours while you do it, everyone would bitch that it is too boring.
COuld you imagine doing that until you made level 50 armorer? Seriously, youd fucking hang yourself. crafting requires multple professions for more intricate items, it requires time, it requires paitence, primarly to weed out the people whho dont want to do it, that way, everyone doesnt just decide to craft their own thing, imagine that, if they wanted to make a community run economy, but everyone just made their own items, nothing would sell, there would be no economy.
People need to think more then 2 minutes ahead and try to see the big picture, Square wants every crafting profession to be useful, as such recipies require materials from multple professions, square wants it to be engauging as such there is a minigame that only gets easier as you level your profession, square wants players to create their own market, as such there is no npc vendor.
And the reason there is no auction house is, auction houses tend to regulate prices, in a free market system prices should be regional not global, everything shouldnt be super cheap because everyone has to undercut eachother, someone in Limsa Loma should not be price cut by someoone in Ul Dah.
Either you are willing to understand the system or you arent, either way neither square or the people who are going to buy this game care about reading your quit thread.

I said nothing about the game that shall not be mentioned thank you.
However. One does not need to look up and guess what materials to make the first craftable item as in pretty much every MMO that has a crafting system. Even the horrid f2p grinders have this simple feature.

He just meant; if WoW isnt being thought bad of by Karmath then he should not think badly of FF14 because you might need to look something up on a third party site or use a third party tool of some sort as well. I am not arguing the crafting system is not easy. If you are an avid crafter, I mean a real crafter not someone who just does it for the money. Half of your experience is finding those out of the way deals or recipes. If your just approaching it as."OK this is something I have to do to make gil." Then yes it will seem tedious no matter what. And if gil is your only reason, then there are other ways to make gil such as crafting, gambling at the casino, gathering goods, drops from monsters or guildleves, or doing money battles.
The crafting system being purely player driven let's avid crafters live out their fantasy of possibly becoming tycoons.
He may work at the local gas station in real life, but in FFXIV he can be Donald Trump. When I first began FFXI, I hated crafting I thought of it as something forced upon me to make lots of gil. But then I found there were alternatives to making gil and it wasn't so bad. Then one day I actually started craftiing, and researching recipes. I fell in love with crafts at that point. I never became one of those tycoons. But some friends of mine did. They put alot of hard work into honing their craft and maxing it. I was a little envious of the accomplishment they earned.

Yes different skills are neccesary to make great things. Its complex but not impossible. Some will say its tedious, some will say it adds to immersion and a sense of accomplishment. If you think its tedious, i am sorry to hear it.

If you have to do this there is something terribly wrong. It just makes zero sense, like half the design choices in this game.
ehm wait i got an idea: you go on this server on the free month... you know that one in pink: click to enlarge
and we shall have fun on the other servers. so little snacks like you can relax and bitch about everything while we accomplish something.. tested beta today first time in OB it's laggy it's the same al over again but i had friends from ffxi with me and it was a blast! it has never been this good.

If you have to rely on wiki's and 3rd party mods, I cannot see why you think its a good design.

HOORAY!!!!!!
You made this comment about WoW right?
