I don't think I mentioned any UI but FF14. I'm not sure why you mentioned WoW.
Yeah, sorry, I realized in hindsight I was assuming and had modified the message accordingly. I said you probably meant this because it's been my observation that the greater body of players complaining about the UI are complaining that it plays so radically different from games they're used to - they did the exact same thing about FFXI, check the archives.
But it seems we're in agreement that one thing we'd like to see fixed about FFXIV is the sluggishness of the GUI. It's particularly bad when there's a lot of things being updated on your screen. I'm guessing the GUI is on the same processing level as the graphics, and that's problematic; it really needs to have a higher priority than the graphics.
The game is in pretty bad shape technically. I like the gameplay, but the crashes are numerous. No hardware mouse makes the mouse-centric controls sluggish.
Portions of dialogue are in Japanese.
The issues I am running into are the type that should have been sorted out in closed beta.
you only crash when things pop up in the back or you alt tab, and only in full screen. thats not uncommon either i have more then a couple games that do or have done so in the past.

I know some enjoy playing with a controller on pc, but the simple fact is this: Its a PC game, and people expect to use a Keyboard and Mouse for a PC game. Its simple. I don't know why so many people can't understand this simple fact. Making a functional and working Keyboard/Mouse system is easy, and the fact that they still haven't done a fix shows that they don't care what we want in the game.
Like many I was anticipating this game for months, After finally getting to play the game I can only shake my head and move on. This game needs a delay and BAD. I truly hope the launch of this games flops just so SE wakes up and fixes the problems people have been telling them to for months.
I will still continue to watch and wait for the fixes the game needs and hope that the game goes in a better direction.

No its not easy since the game is a PS3 design game. Let me explain! since you will play with player who play with a PS3, they cannot create keboard and mouse control like any other game. Why? We all know that the mouse is faster then a joystick so this will give an advantage to pc player. So to be fair they focus on the controller control and slow thing with the keybaord/mouse. Just simple.

I dont think the game will flops, but that just my opinion. SE had made wonderful work with FFXI, but again most of peoples who complaint about FXIV dont like FFXI for mostly the same reasons. Like controls and slow-spaced combats, slow crafting etc. Yes there is lags but as far has i know this is stress test so hopefuly this will be fix at launch. For the unfinish thing or lacks of content (if their is a lack of content, we will see at launch) i dont care since im not a hardcore player anymore who play 8+ hours a days so i will still have fun until SE put more content.
I will still continue to watch and wait for the fixes the game needs and hope that the game goes in a better direction.
im not trying to defend SE personally, im just imputting what i think. if you read the forums, they know about the mouse and are probably working on it, but its probably not at the top of thier priority list. during beta you want to stress servers and work out any game changing bugs. would you rather them fix server crashes, or work on the mouse? would you rather them work on patches to optimize performance on systems, or work on ui? With the release just around the corner, im sure they have bigger things they need to work on than UI, and mouse.
As a computer programmer myself (nuthing major as of yet, still in school), you want STABILTY over anything else. then comes content, and finally comes ui.
Im in beta and yea, ui isnt the best in the world, but its not game breaking. you just have to play around with it for a bit. as for the game being unifinished, i dont think so. i would say it needs more fine tuneing. im sure some of this stuff might not be fixed on release. they want to put the game out as quick as possible so people can enjoy it before the world ends in 2012. but im sure within a month after release, it will be a great game.
p.s The same thing happened with WoW except wow's priorities were different. IT still sold extremly well.
It's quite simple folks, if you don't want to buy unfinished games at release, stop pre-ordering MMO's. There's absolutely no reason to, none, nadda, zip. If you don't want to go through the growing pains, stop buying on launch day, play something you feel is finished.
We've been seeing these threads since before the year 2000, nothing has changed. Game software releases buggy, it always has, especially since the dawn of this ethernet age, and it always will.
There hasn't been a game that released problem free, and long on content in this genre. Before anyone throws up Aion as an argument, look up how it released in Asia. MMO gamers have to wake up, stop day dreaming about this miracle of a game that releases full of gum-drops and candy-canes. It will never happen, I'll eat shoe if it does, or crow, your choice.
If you don't like it, do something that matters, stop supporting the genre....

I have no real problems with the game, but let's be honest people - this IS the game that will we will see at launch. I remember all those Aion betas, where we could play for 3-4 days at a time and then have to wait weeks before playing again. That beta was restricted (level cap) and was the EXACT same game that we had at release. People said the same thing then, "This isn't the whole game" "It's only a beta" etc.
I agree that while this is only a beta, I only expect optimizations between now and release. Nothing really overhauled and no miracle patch. Just optimizations and hopefully something along the lines of tutorials on some of the game's systems.
But I guess we can all have our own hopes, wishes, dreams, delusions, desires and opinions for a couple more weeks and then the early entry pre-order folks will start pouring info and videos onto blogs and YouTube and we'll all know for sure.
The game has some glitches but for the most part it is completely playable and in decent order. People have been already been able to reach above level 20 in open beta with little hassle. Launch wont be as bad as some may think but I wouldn't blame anyone to await atleast another month just feel alot better about the quality of polish.
you only crash when things pop up in the back or you alt tab, and only in full screen. thats not uncommon either i have more then a couple games that do or have done so in the past.
I don't alt-tab or play in full screen, It is an unstable client flat out.....
Check the SE boards.....crashes are rampant, especially since the 9/7 patch.

hmm my very 1st post here lol in fact i decided to make an account here at mmorpg becuase ive been looking for a single player mmo. i currently play DDO with my wife but need something i can play without "waiting" for my lovely lady to join me etc etc
ive been a fan of FF since the very first one on the nes (gods wasnt it such a great reward finishing the game and seeing that credits and that nice "swamp" picture lol )
anyhoot i been in FF14 open beta last 2 days . to get a key just keep trying over n over n over eevry few mins and eventually youll get thru.
whats worries me about this game is the method they use for "patching" how horrible i never got it to work , i had to goo looks on google for alternate DIRECT dl methods. 15mins later found a ff14 site offering this and took the night to dl all the patches.
next day went back to that site followed the simple instruction n voila i was in !!!. i have to say i hate torrents ive always thought its a stupid way for a hgame to offer clients, patches etc torrents are the lower rung of the hiearchy in this kinda thing, add to this fact ALOT of ISP's cap torrents nowadays!!!!!
now in the game ithought graphics are GREAT looks like there finally gonna be an MMO where there actually a storyline thats not just some ancient lore u read about at start of the game n then is completely ignored awsome they even add your toon in cutscenes as u created it COOL
now this is something ALL mmo could learn from square....
now on the other hand square could learn something from other mmos out there like ui ease of use etc i want to play this game i want to love this game but the way the ui works is just very very annoying to me .
i dont mind all the menus for evrything what i do despise is the lag on waiting for a window to open then for the next one to open n then u finallly get what u want to buy for example n cant close them all at once , u cant just run out of range etc . another thing if u use the mouse and click at bottom right of screen on the icon for main menu do your thing and then u cant just click on same icon to close it oo noooes u have to click the annoyingly small x that easy to miss at top right of the open window.
so the game will be good i think if only they can fix up some small details . i cant speak for anyone else but all these small details add up and is what makes or breaks a game for me. i have to add i play sarlona (i think its spelled like this lol ) and in 2 days of playing i saw 3 people help other out in public chat, myself being one person that helped anouther find his way out of town. Have to admit i was kinda disappointed in the FF community as there was plenty of people around just no one could be bothered to help out .
this is open beta so hopefully they will fix some stuff but as is i will not play this game when it comes live, i will not pay to buy the game and then pay a monthly fee as it is now . perhaps if i had a ps3 i might as its obvious SE made this as a console game first and pc game second otherwise they would have made it with friendlier pc player mechanics..
last thing combat is really slow but this is a FF game not ZELDA game so :P
so its not a horrible game its very pretty and im sure some people will love it n play it as it is now but i think many wont but then like i said early this is open beta hiope fully some stuff will be adressed then again maybe it wont time will tell . my guess would be to look to FF11 players n see what SE track record is with them ? i never played that one so...
i think the lack of people chatting or helping out in chat is a lot of people are actually using gamepads instead of keyboard i imagine it would be a pain to put down the gamepad to pick up keyboard and type. than pick gamepad back up. But I use just the keyboard to play and am having a lot of fun in game. yes the ui is slow and laggy but it is the only UI that allows me to play using only the keyboard the way i like to play the most. FFXI introduced me to playing this way and i have been disapointed in every other game that i had to use the mouse and couldn't map my keys to hte point that i didn't need to use the mouse.
You do realize that the only reason why FFXI was "complete" for the international release* was because it came with the first expansion?
lol xipher are you quitting darkfall for FFXIV?
But you're right most people don't realize that the game came out on PS2 in Japan a year before that.. FFXIV as far as development goes is LIGHTYEARS ahead of FFXI @ beta when I played it. I have played FFXI since then.. i can't freaking wait for this release(did play some darkfall too for my pvp fix).

Everyone chats in linkshell. Public isn't the place to chat. It's probably more a Japanese thing then it is a Controller thing. I have a wireless keyboard in my lap and chat with my linkshell all the time =/ Its the same way in FFXI. Talk in /tells use shouts for Seeking for parties for events or what not, get help from your linkshell. No one talks in /say like in the barons in FFXI. If you're in party you use party chat. Just the way it is. Get use to it.
and talking in shout is considered rude. Most of the japanese people will even apologize for using /shout at all.
Christmas might be too early of a release for the game at this point. Major improvments are needed. Good luck to them. I live in Tokyo so I should go to the office and just ask them, "what the hell is going on?"
The only piece of advice I can give to people experiencing major lag is to take the time to adjust your graphics settings. Turning off Ambient Occlusion first was my start and it took care of 90% of my character lag. As far as the server lag, that's an entirely different issue.
"It's still in beta" doesn't cut it anymore. Why would they release the OPEN Beta so close to release date? Are they going to pull an all nighter to fix everything, add more content?
The OB is pretty much the final product with a few content not released yet. "Patches"
Open Beta started the First of September. Release date is the 22nd of September. The early access is like what? A week before offical release?
The game isn't developed and lts really close to release date.
"So, director, how far in development is the game?"
"Well, we are getting there, bu.."
"Good, good. Are all the features in place and functioning for release?"
"Well, yes, but they're not nearly rea-"
"That is great to hear. Are the servers holding up?"
"Yes, bare-"
"Good. Get ready to release the game in 2 months."
"That's not a very good id-"
"Silence, do not put your family to shame."
Unfortunately that means more waiting for me. The game is probably finished sometime in 2011.
[Mod Edit]
I LOL'd at this lol
I'm not too happy with the game at the moment and I already paid for it in full, I guess I'll take it and if it dont get better I'll just have to live with that loss.
The game has some glitches but for the most part it is completely playable and in decent order.
Which is why it's released now and not when it's ready.
It's going to take it a year at least before it gets really good.
This forum will be a huge pain in the ass before that happens. GL to some of you.
Ok saying it needs a year is really an over exaggeration. No doubt they could use an extra month or 2 to clean up some stuff but I dont think that will be stopping many from buying it on launch day. Alot are playing everyday and seem to be having fun. My entire company I am in will be there at launch day 1 like alot of other companies will be. No doubt I see some patches in the first month of launch being issued.
Can someone tell me if the UI in FF XI is slow and laggish as it is in FF XIV? Does it take forever to scroll down a list or display server-side information?
