Can someone tell me if the UI in FF XI is slow and laggish as it is in FF XIV? Does it take forever to scroll down a list or display server-side information?
It most certainly is not. FFXI is a great game, smooth transitions through menus and controls and battle settup actually better.
I noticed people making comparisons to other betas in this thread (Warhammer, Vanguard, AoC being popular ones).
Being that I've played in many betas (not Vanguard, but have played in closed betas of Warhammer and Age of Conan) I can tell you for me personally that both Age of Conan's and Warhammer's betas were MUCH more playable for me. Not only do I receive consistent crashes, frame rate issues, (changing graphic's settings do not help, the problem here is my processor, FFXIV refuses to make full use of my graphic cards), and game breaking bugs, but as a programmer I see lots of faults with the system other people probably wouldn't realize. I've had a bug where I couldn't resurrect my character, because I happened to be returning as I was killed, which now renders that character completely unplayable without GM intervention or a level 38 Tham.
It wasn't the worst beta I've played in. I've had far worse experiences like Anarachy Online, but it is a lot worse than most betas. That's just my personal experience, but a lot of people within my linkshell are having similar problems, causing them to log off for night. For a beta, it's also very odd we have absolutely no means to report feedback or bugs, since SE only let a select few testers in older versions report feedback. Let's hope the JP players are doing a good job sending feedback, concerns, and bug reports on issues they encounter.
That said I still haven't lost hope in the game. I don't expect it to be in a good state on release, but I'm guessing by the time the PS3 release rolls around the game should be in pretty good shape and fun to play. In the meantime we have the opportunity to level our jobs up and be far ahead of those who waited till PS3 release.

That is statement that bears hope for the future improvement of FF XIV. Hopefully down the road, it will be as smooth. Let's just hope that it's sooner rather than later.
The FFXIV Official Benchmark is one of the best CPU benchmarking programs, it seems. And the game isn't much different.
It's wonderful making this discovery right after you bought a second video card and new PSU in anticipation of this game, and crying. Oh well, the new PSU comes in tomorrow, so I'll be slapping her in to power my dual 5770s. Hoping for the best.
P.S., even if it really is so dependent on the CPU.. I have an i7 930, so it shouldn't be giving me half the trouble that it is... sigh. SE has just completely botched this, as far as programming goes.

im sure the game is being made with the cell processor in mind, considering the PS3 version of the game is going to be the landslide popular version for the game in japan (this games largest market)...... therefore, current PC tech is probably ill equipped to handle what the game is doing, considering the cell has 8 cores, and at most you can have 4 in todays MAINSTREAM processors.
that isnt an excuse.... it should have been developed independently for the PC so it ran well.... but that clearly isnt the case.
all of that aside, the game doesnt run THAT BAD. come on guys, i have an E8400 which is dual core and i run the game maxed out and it is very playable. there is a lot of stuttering, which is an optimization issue, but it is still playable..... stop complaining because you are getting 40 FPS instead of 60.....
"So, director, how far in development is the game?"
"Well, we are getting there, bu.."
"Good, good. Are all the features in place and functioning for release?"
"Well, yes, but they're not nearly rea-"
"That is great to hear. Are the servers holding up?"
"Yes, bare-"
"Good. Get ready to release the game in 2 months."
"That's not a very good id-"
"Silence, do not put your family to shame."
Unfortunately that means more waiting for me. The game is probably finished sometime in 2011.
[Mod Edit]
I have to admit coming from you this does give me pause. I know you're a fairly big FF fan.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

I highly doubt your running this game on maxed, mind giving me more of your specs and fps?
I'm not sure what the deal is with the UI and "lag". Crafting is an absolute chore for me because of it. I'd say it takes a good minute to set up a consigned craft (leve?). Scrolling through my mats to put on my retainer is also insanely slow. Setting the retainer up for bazaar is infuriatingly slow. It is defintely something to do with communicating with the server though. (my R can spike to 947 while my S stays around 20-30)
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

hmmm don't judge the game by the beta, they are holding back stuff hmm... this is what people were saying to me when I felt uneasy about STO after playing the beta...
Yeah but Cryptic sucks and SE is great. I had zero faith Cryptic would make STO work. I have every reason to believe SE will make FFXIV work.
SE is great? They haven't made a proper game since FFVI. Okay and maybe FFVII. They've made the money so what do they do? Here's some half-assed games for you to play. It all went downhill after the SQUARESOFT/ENIX merge. =[

I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but Cryptic actually did a better job with STO, then SE have with FF XIV. STO even seems to have more content, which is scary.
One thing you can say about Cryptic, is that they have always communcated strongly with the community. People not liking what they say is another thing, but at least they communicate, which is more than can be said out SE.
SE's reputation has been steadily going down since 10 imo.
Judging from all your previous posts you just need to go back to WoW and stay there. It figures it takes a WoW fanboi to try to ruin other gamer's preferences. Someone hire you to fill other boards with nonsense or is it your own stupidity ?

Surely there must be a way to speed up this game's UI.... its really bad. Slow on an epic scale.... Geological time.
Sure. Right now they monitor everything we do with the UI, especially things we buy and sell- they actually got rid of one NPC money cheat recently because of it.
Once they get rid of that extra step, things should speed up just with that alone. For the rest, well, beta continues past release..
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

You gotta admit. 10 on has been pretty bad.
I liked 11 and 12 so don't generalize because you don't like it.

All I can say about the game so far is it has been the most difficult to download. I have not even been able to test it.

kinda hard to accept this, considering one small fact: The game is not yet released.

same here.
the UI is server side in FFXIV ... anti-cheat.

They're fixing the network, chill.. This is why we're here so that we flood the system and overdraw these problems.
