Why Gw2 has 83.000 fans on facebook while rift has only 3000

Hi guys i recently saw on facebook that the fans that are following rift are so many less than Gw2.

The difference is so big.

83000 vs 3000

how a game like rift can succeed with such low fan base against Gw2?

I just wanted to know what  are your opinions

My first guess is that GW2 is a sequel so it has an already solid fanbase that are also waiting for a long time for this game. My second guess is that GW2 looks better than RIFT given that the devs have not showed really much about the game mechanics. I would stick to the first one.

The Facebook link is more noticable or visible on GW2 homepage?

I think GW2 will be a nice game with loads of people playing it for a long time...

Rift is just another mmorpg with nice graphics that has singleplayer and co-op gameplay inside small instanced maps and will not have anywhere near 1/10000 of GW population..in forum words will fail.

Well it helps that we have had more high profile coverage and information released about GW2 and GW2 has the GW1 player base to rely upon.

If we discount that though I would suggest that it might be because GW2 seems more of a big thing in terms of MMO's and breaking the conventions of the genre many people have become tired of. It yet remains to be seen how well they can do that but all the information so far is looking promising.

Game differences notwithstanding, the reason why is that GW is already an existing franchise. They already have the fanbase from the first game. RIFT is a brand new IP. This isn't hard to figure out.

Quite simple a lot of folks like me hate facebook.  Im on the rift forums hoping to get a beta key.

I hate facebook, zynga and everything both those companies stand for,  and I got a really good feeling the type of folks who would play rift might also fit into that category.

Its a shame really since RIFT will beat both GW2 and SWTOR.

At least I hope so :)

I don't use facebook. Also as others have mentioned guild wars 2 already has a well developed fanbase. Also keep in mind, Trion is a new face to the game while Arena is not. Therefore, it's quite pointless to compare them.

And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:
And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

Guild Wars has a much much much much larger focus on advertising their product. It really is that simple.

It also shows the type of gamer interested in each. Casual gamers and facebook/twitter go hand in hand. GW is a game built on no monthly fee and take your time. It connects better with that crowd.

I myself stay away from facebook and twitter for the most part. I don't join fan groups etc either. And I have zero interest in GW2. It is just different marketting and markets.

So your logic is that people who like Facebook and Zynga are also interested in GW2?

I dislike Facebook and Zynga as well. I have no Facebook account. And yet, I am far more interested in GW2 than Rifts (apologies, Sembieda).

And why, WHY in the world would you try to draw some connection between people who want to play Rift and people who don't like/participate in Facebook and Zynga? Are you trying to establish some fanciful relation between 'rebellious, independant thinkers who don't follow the crowd' to an MMO that is mostly going to follow a very standard MMO formula?

I hope you get your beta key, I really do. I have nothing against Rift.

Its because Anet/Ncsoft are pro in generating hype just like Blizzard. Moreover its a sequal to already popular game. Not to mention GW2 will be free of monthly sub.

Pretty easy to understand since GW2 has an already established fan base.   The direction the devs are taking this game are definitely different than past MMO's.  Have to wait and see how this works out.

As to Rift, have to take a wait and see attitude until we can try it out.  We have no idea if this game will be any good.  From some of the initial information released it has possibilities.  All depends how they decide to fund it.

As to TERA, it is just another Aion, a korean grindfest.  Can't believe you have not been burnt enough by similar games to get excited about this one.

I really wish people would stop trying to compare hype/features/fanbase between these two games, which inevitably makes fans feel defensive about their favorite and just stirs up flaming (but then again, what would these boards be if there were no flames?).

The more I learn about Rift and GW2 the more convinced I am that at their core they simply appeal to different people looking for different things in their games, dynamic content aside. So, why the competition? GW2 isn't going to "steal" fans away from Rift because fans of Rift are looking for things they can't get in GW2, and vice versa.

Stop the madness and leave Rift and GW2 fans alone!

Why did the first Harry Potter movie do so well? Established fan base is a large reason though the movie itself had merit.

Guild Wars sold 6.5 million copies as of this year (half mill in the last ~12 months really) that has a huge word of mouth effect. Even if you never played GW, chances are you heard of it or knew someone who played.

Here is a return question and then I will take a shot at yours. How do you define MMO success?

Can you use the same method used to define Modern Warfare 2's success? Or World of Warcraft? (I would say no to both of these.)

Rift can be successful if they market well - this means getting their name and gameplay mixed in various forms of media. Not just Internet ads and the occasional 2-page interview in GamePro.

Rift can be successful if they are able to pay the bills and pay the employees with sales income. Games do not have to be blockbusters or sales record setting to be successful. At least if you base success on a positive ROI, receiving more than it cost you to get in.

Rift can be successful if they communicate well.

Rift can be successful if they do not open with 400 world servers, diluting the community development. They should always have extra servers ready to go to meet demand, but don't do WAR style launch. For example as soon as they see a queue trend (not one day of queues on a Sat) open another by flicking a switch, not going out to buy hardware tomorrow morning.

There are probably 101 reasons for success or failure. Guild Wars 2 is not likely in the top 10 of  these reasons. Black Ops and Medal of Honor are not really going to impact the success of Halo: Reach.

    I seriously doubt it will.

GW has the following because it's a sequel to an already established leader in the genre. Rift is simply another D&D game coming out. The whole wizards and elfs thing is so super saturated that I'm shocked anyone would expect a new title in the same theme to succeed.

If Rift is in trouble, they only have their own lack of creativity to blame. I'm sure the D&D folk would love something "new"...but there are already a plethora of choices. Maybe this one will be "different"...but I'm sure every "fantasy" based MMO that's failed in the past 2 years has had the same goal.

    taken from wiki

"Guild Wars was noted for being one of the few commercially developed games in the MMORPG genre to offer online play without subscription fees,[10] its instanced approach to MMORPG play,[11] and the quality of the graphics and play for computers with low specifications.[12] In April 2009, NCSoft announced that 6 million units of games in the Guild Wars series had been sold"

6 million sold does that answer the question ? Why  a game that sold six million copies has more fans than game that has not sold anything yet.
