I have a nice brand new shinny graphics card with double the memory of the previous one. Logic would kind of dictate, at least to my mind, that I should see improved performance in AOC. For the second time running now I have upgraded my graphics card, doubling the amount of memory/better overall card - to find AOC runs worse than before. This was a fresh client install, no tweaks, no third party apps and AOC runs like a dead dog. Gone from an average of 25fps to between 9 - 12. Same settings, same res, same DX9 client.
In contrast, for the second time now, every other game performs better. Some games even automatically detect the change in hardware and tweak my settings for optimal performance for the new card. So why I see no performance boost in AOC, instead a performance drop, baffles any sort of logic I have.
I could spend some 'time' tweaking AOC and loading third party apps to address the multiple known performance issues. But I can't be bothered, you shouldn't have to jump through hoops to get a game to perform 'reasonably' well. This is one of the reasons AOC and Funcom fail so badly, performance is almost an afterthought.

Hard to argue any points you have because you didn't post your old video card compared to your new one. I would have to say it is your machine. I previously upgraded from an ATI HD3800 X2 to a HD 5700 card and it was the low end kind and my performance doubled. Both in DX9 and DX10. Almost all of the settings are on max, I think shadows are put to low and a few others.
I'm running Win7 x64 8 gigs of RAM. No tweaks or 3rd party apps. Previous card would not run AoC in DX10 it ran DX9 full settings just fine. DX10 it would stutter, crawl and lock up.

At least you didn't buy the card specifically for AoC, and since you can see a marked improvement on other games it's not such a big deal.
AoC is dead as far as pvp goes anyway.

Something is definately wrong withyour system as i haven't seen anything below 25 fps in AOC for couple of years, even when i still had old GTX260 (overclocked of course) - always 40-60, always at highes settings but without extreme anti-aliasing (it really slow things down) on 2560x1600 resolution and i suppose you.re playing on something like 1920x1200? No reasonable card will produce that low FPS you posted...
I am running a 32bit OS and no doubt if I post my specs and graphics card models, we can have a nice discussion about all the things 'I' can change to get AOC to run better. But that doesn't to my mind take away from the fact every other game without any effort on my part - runs extremely well with the new graphics card. We are talking everything from MMO's to single player games - some graphically intesive ones as well. AOC performance declined - it is the only game that has straight out the box defied logical expectations. This isn't the first time, but the second time this has happened.
AOC is an isolated instance, I have already been fooled once on the AOC forum with fingers pointing at my machine. I upgraded recently and apart from the limitation I have of sticking to a 32bit OS for the moment - performance is what I expect with everything. One or two games performing badly - I will point the finger at my machine/card myself. But here we are talking a single game each time sticks out like a sore thumb - I am past the point of believing it's anything to do with my rig. I know the performance I expect from games and AOC doesn't come even close.
It is possible that something on the PC is causing issues with AOC. Overall I am pretty streamlined and run things like Game Booster to stop unneeded resources being utilised. I am hard pressed to think what might cause an issue.
I am running a really low res 1024x768 so you would expect 'reasonable' performance. But changing settings high, med or low makes no difference to performance. The only thing that impacts on performance is changing settings to Raid/PVP then I average around 25-30fps. A 'workaround' that has been around since the expansion I believe.
Now I know from past experience that if I start to download all the third party apps, AOCQS, AOC Downloadcache, ByCrom etc etc. I will be able to improve performance as these address 'known' performance issues within the AOC client. But I can't be bothered, I will end up spending more time messing around with settings than I will playing the game. In AOC it can be down to one setting having an impact on everything, normal rules don't seem to apply. Switch on shadows - better performance than disabled - err what? Enable grass - better performance than disabled. World particles on - better performance than off - it all seems very strange indeed.
Everything else is fine so I will just chalk AOC up to being an anomaly that just doesn't work on my PC. Oh yeah and Funcom can't code for toffee.
Your bottleneck is lack of RAM, not GPU power it seems. I saw a marked increase in performance when I went from 4 to 8 gb RAM, 3 gb is hardly enough anymore, and never was for AoC to get good performance.
^^ This, you require more resources.
Since you are refusing to give out your computer spec, shell I ask what is the purpose of your thread?
if you have a decent graphics card then chances are its the system itself that isnt able to use it properly.. either the processor is under spec, most likely in fact.. though as you havent stated the basics of your system then it would be hard to diagnose the problem.. im assuming your not running a 'single core' cpu. and that your mobo actually supports the GPU's capabilities.. ....
my own system is able to run AoC perfectly fine at maximum resolution.. at 1440x900 (monitor limit)
Phenom I 2.6 proc (quad core), 4gb Ram (1066 x2 2gb sticks), Nvidia 260gt (768mb) and windows xp, (32 bit) and it runs perfectly fine...
there are some good reasons to complain about AoC.. but.. without more information, your own, may, or may not.. be valid ones..
Post your specs so people can help....It is not that hard.

I don't think the OP is seeking help to alleviate the problem, rather seems it is made to point out a problem. If only there was an internet meme to describe such a post....
the question though, is the problem with the game, or with the guys own computer.. so far.. odds on favourite is that he has a problem with his computer.. the game in particular.. is more than likely.. irrelevant.
I ran AoC 2 years ago in DX9 at a constant 70fps with an overclocked Nvidia 8800 GT. I have a hard time seeing how your video card would be the problem. Must be another part of your system causing the issues. I'm pretty sure I only had 2GB of RAM at the time, but I might have had 4. IMO increasing your RAM shouldn't be the factor.

That part is very true. They have fantastic artists, but frankly their software engineers are shite.
I have no clue where your problem lies, but I've heard similar stories since pre-release. Each with it's own individual "fix." I have noticed however that AoC seems to like Nvidia more than ATI. Most probems of this nature in my experience came from ATI users, and occasionally either a driver update OR rollback helped.

Thus rendering you completely unknowledgable and your statement worthless.
ATI and AMD user. I have been for many years. No problems running the game. That wasn't the way at launch yes, but now the game runs fine and better than some of the other MMO's I have played recently.
There was one build of ATI Catalyst drivers serveral months ago that it said DX10 would crash AOC. That was fixed the following month.
I think OP had an alterior motive for this thread. No one should be ashamed to post their computer specs. No one will make fun of you. No one knows you personally only by your "post history".

This will seem like a stupid suggestion but, I upgraded my card for AoC once and it was horrible performance afterwards. It turned out I forgot to put any graphics drivers in (I was that excited about my new card that I totally forgot it needed drivers.
Try to change from Fullscreen to windowed mode as well. It may have impact on performance.
I hope you get your problems sorted. AoC is doing great.
Running windowed mode I get a massive performance increase, 50fps with settings all maxed out and a high view distances at a high res etc. Client still defies logic to my mind, I switch off particles and performance dips, same with switching off grass, dropping shadow levels etc. Dropping the quality of the settings actually makes things worse, go from high to low - worse performance.
Windowed mode has resolved the problem, many thanks for the suggestion. Doesn't really explain the issue but there you go, can't complain too much or I will get a bad rep .
Ah we have the PC Guru, the Specs in the sig hero, the internet armchair engineer do we. Read the above, there was a potential cause pointed to. I was simply trying to be helpful. Certainly more helpful than your peabrained comment. Seems we have yet another jackass who doesn't like women posting on technical threads.

It is an ATI card and as Catriona85 points out AOC has 'known' issues with ATI cards. I have also come across people that have found an individual fix to an AOC problem. Nvidia users don't tend to suffer the same issues, though I had an Nvidia card ages ago and AOC melted it. Part of the reason I now prefer ATI cards. To be fair AOC ran better then, but that was on a single cpu machine running XP and AOC version 1.5 on a 128mb card - things slowly started to deteriorate over time with each new release.
I am not posting specs for a reason, time and time again performance issues in AOC are not down to specs. They are down to strange issues because AOC performance defies logic and the client is not optimised. But ripping specs apart and pointing out the obvious weak link is often used as a smokescreen.
Ah, and no specifics given out yet apart from the surprise - ATI card. [snip]
It is the ATI drivers having issues with the rest of the world, not the other way round. Some people like forgetting how famous the quality of ATI drivers is...
So yeah, there are indeed some shite softwere engineers around but I bet there are more of them in this thread than sitting at Funcom.
[Mod Edit]
nah i found FFXIV more of a hog performance wise than the beautiful world of AoC (shame the gameplay and the bug riddled game doesn't match).

theres your problem, new graphics card with lots of memory, 32 bit os, 3 gigs memory max. graphics card memory makes you use up ram, has done so for the last few years now. low ram + big graphics card memory = low performance in ram hogs like aoc.
