I played the Open beta a couple times now.
Yes, there are some things that make you wonder why they chose to design it that way.
Yes, controller works better than keyboard/mouse.
Yes, you need a decent computer to run the game well.
Combat is fun, but very frustrating for a person that has never played FFXI and that does not understand the combat system. Before you bash it, please level up a few times and acquire 3-4 skills. You will find out there is a lot to it and it is not slow at all, it is challenging and any little mistake can get you killed.
Traveling is decent so far. You can teleport back to questgivers when you do ther levequests. Also, you can teleport to cities, etc. It is faster to travel than most games once you learn how this works.
You MUST READ in the starting area to know where to go. However, the game does have markers on the global map and minimaps to show you where to go and where enemies are at for quests. If you are complaining that you are lost, you have not read the quest in your journal.
I am disappointed in a few things, but the game is fun once you level a few times and get to understand how a few of the games many systems work. I am keeping my CE pre-order and so is my GF, we will give it at least a month or 2 and I am pretty sure we will keep plying longer than that once we really experience more of what the game has to offer.
GAME TIL YOU DIE!!!!

well, I think I am keeping my pre order too, but damned if I can actually play the Open beta since it seems like it is taking forever just to download the thing with that patcher.

More power to you. I for one have cancelled my pre-order. It all balances in the end...
I'm glad I got a chance to try the beta for pre-ordering because now I don't have to bother with cancelling. Not the game for me, for many of the reasons that have already been stated in many different threads here.
I have cancelled my CE pre-order but I'm not a hater and will take a look at the game once it launches. The game has some interesting aspects to it and I am likely to give it a try but some of the technical issues and the lack of what many consider a proper keyboard/mouse interface are currently of concern to me.
Same here, which anyone who's read any of my other posts knows.
But yes also to wanting to play it for several months after launch. For my first subscription I'll probably get a three month one if it's offered. It was kind of fun being in the early days of WoW although I really didn't appreciate it fully at the time. I started late Dec 2004 and it was an interesting thing to watch. I have always sort of regretted I missed that first month of launch. I want see how the community develops during startup and the first few months of FFXIV so I'll be around for a while.
Keeping my pre-order. Most of my issues have been: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/3776675/thread/290321#3776675 , not the game. The game is awesome, I will have no issues with it. I just hope my computer doesn't explode and end my world.
Yes, I like being in at the start of the game as there is always a lot of activity and people running around that was one of the reasons for me place a pre-order and generally technical issues and reported concerns don't bother me or stop me from going ahead but yeah I understand for many that the need to use a controller isn't an issue but for me it is unfortunately. Partly this is because I have a number of different systems that I play on including a high end gaming laptop that I use while travelling and partly because I prefer the flexibility that a mouse and keyboard.
i've let it download for over 40 hours but its still at 29%, first time in my life i have this problem with downloading an MMO or beta-version MMO....
Yeah I'm keeping mine, aside from the latency issues (which they'll have under control over the next few months) I haven't had any problems that would make me cancel. Plus I'm determined to get the crafting down to a science no matter how frustrating will be.
I'm extremely disappointed here. They really need to fix this thing.

Hey Sun, have you checked your ports for working with SE's peer-to-peer downloader? SE posted a notice about it on the beta site apparently this morning so it's possible that's a problem for some of the people having launcher problems. I never thought to make adjustments and really haven't had any problems but they say in the post that Win7 is enabled by default and that's my OS.
They have written instructions for checking XP and Vista at: https://dev-na.ffxiv.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=225755
And screenshots at: https://dev-na.ffxiv.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=16619
You might check it out if you haven't already done it. Hope it helps.
Keeping mine. The game is great and yes they still jhave some work to do but there is nothing game breaking from stopping me from not playing. I learned alot about crafting today and got my conjurer up to level 6. Its sweet!
I'm keeping my preorder since XIV was my excuse to get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152206
What I find really super-duper awesome is that I was going to order that one or the i7 one this afternoon before going to class, but before I did, I decided I should go to class and just think about it (since the one with the i7 only came with a one year parts and service warranty and without fail I've had problems with laptops after a year). When I got to my friends house, I did some research to see if the i5 cpu would be a bottleneck, found nothing, then noticed on neweggs website that the price fell $50 AND came with free shipping, instead of the estimated $18 I would have likely been charged. That price difference between just this evening and this afternoon is enough to cover XIV, my gas to go get it, and lunch at a chinese buffet that I think has awesome sushi ($10 after tip and I haven't gotten sick ^_^).

You cant downlaod the game with the updater? Torrent is your friend. Yeah i know this is not cool to have to pass the update with third party but still for now this is the best way and it fast.
i expalin how to do it there:

Nice , I can't find any users on Ares... anyone have an idea of a more safe and secure free torrent downloader? i hate adding crap to my computer like this. /sigh
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
Im not sure to understand what you want but if you need a torrent client, utorrent is a good one.
I've stated this in a different thread but to increase the download speed you will need to open up Ports. The FFXIV Downloader works based on a Peer To Peer system, just like BitTorrent and such and requires you to open ports to ease connections to the sources (seeders).
The ports you need to open are as followed:
UDP - 55296 - 55551
TCP - 54992 - 55551
UDP - 443
And to learn how to open ports PortForward has some pretty easy tutorials on how to open Ports for almost every Router there is.
I've opened up the ports myself and my download time dropped from 26 hours to 3-4 hours.
That another way to do it but i prefer torrent i dont like manually open ports.
I'd have to agree with you, but some users are simply not comfortable using services like MegaUpload, etc. There has been reports of people catching viruses too, so this is a lot more secure :P
Torrent has nothing to do with megaUpload or direct downlaod and since the updater of SE is a torrent client or p2p, you use their torrent files so their are safe. I cannot say the same thing with open port tough.
I don't mind manually opening up patches with <insert favorite bittorrent client here> during OB but they better have this patcher fixed before launch. Especially considering S.E. loves to patch in small doses.
Even for using BitTorrent, I had to open up a few ports to improve my connection. It's safe in this case.
(For those wondering while this is the subject, BitTorrent requires ports 6881 to 6889 and sometimes 6969 to 7000 (all TPC/UDP))
I agree with you but for now this is the way around.
