Where exactly does WoW dumb down, when compaired to FF XIV? FF XIV is in fact more dumbed down, as all it offers is grinding (i.e. you see a mob, so kill it).
FF XIV doesn't have any quests other than the story arc, so the lack or presence of a ! is moot.
WoW gives a very low learning curve for gaming, Blizzard has even lowered it over the years making the thought process largely unnecessary. Just sit beck with a beer in one hand and mouse in the other and thats it more or less.

And FF XIV doesn't have an even lesser one? The only difficult part of being introduced to FF XIV is the lack of documention and a tutorial, beyond that the only thought process needed is if a mob is to high for you to kill. Its one of the simplest games around.
You can also not play WoW simply sitting back with a beer in one hand. You'd die, very quickly, at any stage of leveling. Once you reach end game, the raids actually take coordination and people paying attention, because you need tactics to take down the bosses. The only dumbed down element, is the rate of leveling. Not how you achieve it.
It sounds like you have misinformed and second hand knowlegde of WoW.
SE may be holding back some quest content, but in general I don't think this is going to be a hard core quest driven progression game, a la WOW or LotRO. I think it will be more like Aion was at launch (its becoming more and more like WOW with every release) where you have a mixture of quest driven content with the expectation that you'll go out and form up a group and grind up some experience in a dungeon area.
It is true, WOW did make quest driven character advancement even more popular than its predecessors, and not every game has that mechanic and will disappoint those looking for it.

If Final Fantasy has always been a story-driven series of games (as opposed to Dragon Quest which is about grinding), why make the MMO about grinding? Why not give it a story driven exoerience as well? Quests are one of the best ways of delivering that. Now I like sandbox RPGs too, my favorites being UO and DAoC when it first came out (quests were almost nonexistant). FFXIV kinda doesn't do much of either, at least for the levelling aspect. I'm sure the dungeons are well designed, though I haven't had the chance to explore them yet.

Lol, you told one poster that he's misinformed about WoW, and yet you're completely misinformed about FFXIV. I don't sit and grind all day long. I gather, i craft, i grind, i explore. I run around getting all the teleports. I group with others and socialize. I participate in faction quests (from the little guy that appears, can't remember his official title) And yet im far from experiencing everything i want to experience even in a limited beta. And aside from the Story line giving you directions that you have to actually read where and what to do (other than right clicking on a quest npc hitting accept without even reading the quest then opening up your map looking for the indicator telling you where to go.)
There is nothing dumbed down about FFXIV. You even have the option of leveling other classes under the same character and then developing a very complex well built and rounded character. Wow classes have defined roles and thats it. The quest system in WoW gives you . . . . . . to where you need to go as well as circles and numbers numbering then in order from your quest log. We already hit how dumbed down leveling is in WoW. And WoW raiding is not complex. There is a small learning curve in the beginning, and thats only learning the fight and what the mob does. There has not been a single fight in the game thats been difficult. The only difficult part are the players you bring to the raid. Some are just retarded.
And endgame pve is as intricate as just knowing a rotation LOL. Once you have your rotation down, you pull top dps. And rotations in wow are just 1 2 3 3 3 3 3 1 2 3 3 3 3 3 . And half the tards that do play can't even figure out what to do if their rotation gets broken up and they have to react to the encounter. Standing in fire anyone?
Again, WoW has dumbed down the mmo market, and its players. They expect everything handed to them instead of running around and finding out for themselves, or hell even opening up google and researching something yourself.
TL:DR? Don't compare FFXIV being dumbed down to WoW. There isn't a comparison and WoW has any game beat in dumbed down content...and players.
What do you think gathering is? Its grinding for crafting. You can also explore in any MMO.
All MMO combat, no matter the game is about rotation. Once you have a sequence you like, that's it. The only variences comes in mostly during PvP, which FF XIV doesn't have. You have also obviosuly not done much raiding in WoW, if you think the bosses are simply tank and spank. The majority are far from it.
You are simply seeing the dumed down mechanics of FF XVI throught tinted glasses.
Open beta is also not limted, other than for the full story arc being locked. You are playing the most dumbed down MMO for many years. Its grinding, with a tank and spam combat mechanic. It has zero thought needed behind it, other than your chances of surviving their dps. I have also been playing FF XIV since closed beta 2, so know fully well what it has to offer and how it plays.
Being able to play all classes on a single character, means only one thing. Everyone (eventually) will be the same. Any game that offers diversity, is less dumbed down. Its simply a mechanic that looks good on paper, until you realise where it leads.
I'd be happy to Google stuff I don't know once they fix the crash that happens every time I minimize the game window. I'm not really asking for SE to dumb down the game, but just give new players the option of seeing where they need to go to get started. After the initla quest is done, that's it. They teach you how to do a guildleve, craft some basic things and stab a squirrel over and over. I know that's not all there is to do in the game, but forgive us new players for thinking it is when we're never told about it, much less how to initiate it. Anyway, I'll brb trying to figure out how to change jobs.
Don't post much, so I don't intend to jump on either side of the fence, but provide my own objective view. When FFXIV decides to be content rich, it shines. I love the NPC interactions and story quests. The combat system isn't the best, but it's fun enough to get me through. But I won't pretend I'm an amazing gamer. I can find my way through Guildleves and story quests well enough. It's just that after those are done, and I still have a few levels before I can start any other interactive content, how am I supposed to know what to do or where to go? Nothing has told me about changing jobs or crafting, or even what sort of perks go along with crafting. Nowhere in the game was it indicated how I even go about using the armory system, or why I should do so. All I know is I'm some pretty boy with an ugly weapon and ugly clothes. I can't buy new equipment anywhere (not even a shield for my gladiator), I can't join any guilds. Even grinding, which I'm willing to accept if the wild encounters are compelling is next to impossible with how sparse farmable mobs are in many areas.
I played EVE some time ago, and spent a month on it. I really enjoyed many aspects of the game until I decided I wanted to do more than the lvl 1 missions. That was my first mistake, as trying to figure out how to do so lost me many ships and lots of money. Holding your hand like it does in tutorial quests is not what semi-casual gamers like me want. What we want is more than a tutorial quest then a boot out of the nest. We want a natural progression between being a complete noob and being completely on your own without a clue. WoW may be tired and guilty of some of the same boring grindy quests that other games are, but at least it carefully guides your progress so that you never feel like you have nothing to do due to ignorance.

I have killed the lich king. I've done my fair share of raiding in WoW. There is not a single boss in any content that isn't repetitive tank and spank. Mob casts cloud, avoid cloud. Mob defbuffs target. Stay away from target. Mob buffs target. All gather into target. Continue Tank and spank. Mob spawns, offtank pickup mob. Dps switch, kill spawned mob. Continue Tank and Spank.

Strange, you just described a scenario where you don't just stand in one spot tanking and spanking. It seems you know full well, you have to use tactics. Just because one has learnt them and they've become routine, doesn't mean they don't exist. Its also way more than FF XIV has to offer in that area.
As FF XIV has defined lines and invisiable walls, I find that statement re. gathering quite ironic, but yes gathering is grinding mats for crafting. Its not a challenge or has any debth, and most MMOs have it.

You are aware that your damage to a mob is based on your position - for example flanking and standing behind will do more damage? But not all MObs have the same directional weak spot. And thats something you can test for yourself - but of course in your little world it doesn't exist.

The game is missing 6-7gb of data (15gb is the space the installed client will be, you will need an extra 6gb if digital dowloading it - and it currently the beta sits at about 8-9gb), and its not cut scenes, as they take up little space, largest file in the entire Square folder is about 40mb, then 30ish then 16mb, so they are rendering on the fly. You will notice that several hundred folders have nothing in them (for example one folder has 10 other folders inside it, and not 1 file in any of them...thats because its not there YET. Also the sequential numbering on the files that are there are missing some 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, 14,15,16 (where are the missing ones)
And why would a company like SE need an Open Beta to test quests, as long as the general mechanism works, they all should, how do you think thy have managed with the quests in the final fantasy game series, they probabaly have the most experience staff in the field and there would be little we could offer.

I really wish you would stop spreading misinformation. The bulk of the game's quest are not in OB.
Really, what was in closed beta that isn't in open?
Did you not play FFXI? The majority of FFXI wasn't "unlocked" until you did story line missions because most of the game was story arc (minus the bonus stuff added later)
What was in closed beta that is not in open?
Xipher is a fanboi troll who's been incessantly posting in various threads that the open beta 2 weeks before launch does not contain most of the content of the retail even though many other posters have correctly pointed out that content has been unlocked since closed beta and that almsot all other open betas at a time close to launch has at minimum all the low level content available (some will withhold high level content). He also cites that the game requires 15 gb (remember 15gb to install) yet the game only has 7gb (7gb to play) which is very amusing to do so, but kinda pitiful.
Xpiher has been a fanboi of some of the most notoriously terrible games. When they fail he moves to the next, pledging his life in service of the particular game.
Most of FFXIV's content, just like FFXI, is the story missions. You both are dumb. And how can I be a fanboy for just stating the truth? How can I be a fanboy of a game that I probably have no intention of buying? Idiots.

They just don't listen anymore Xpiher, alot of people are just in denial, they can't back down now even with hard evidence as they will be made to look more fools than they already are. They will soon go quiet in a couple of weeks. Sadly as little attention is paid on these forums there follishness will continue on to the next game in-line for false rumours.

Yeah it does. The difference is it offers carrots, where as with FF XIV its a force of will.
No it doesn't. If offers level progression, with force of will grinding to progress through them. The only carrot it has is the story arc.
So as people have been pointing out, what's next for the OP is indeed grinding.
(double post)
Right now square has said that alot or most of the content is not in game yet during OB. expect more npc quests and such at release, why they waiting till then is beyond me, be better to put them in now and test em.. I get the feeling they lying and are full of crap, and are just saying that to save face.
"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

Rift: World of Warcraft clone #9321 Nothing special to see here move along.
Core i5 13600KF, BeQuiet Pure Loop FX 360, 32gb DDR5-6000 XPG, WD SN850 NVMe ,PNY 3090 XLR8, Asus Prime Z790-A, Lian-Li O11 PCMR case (limited ed 1045/2000), 32" LG Ultragear 4k Monitor, Logitech G560 LightSync Sound, Razer Deathadder V2 and Razer Blackwidow V3 Keyboard

Most of FFXIV's content, just like FFXI, is the story missions. You both are dumb. And how can I be a fanboy for just stating the truth? How can I be a fanboy of a game that I probably have no intention of buying? Idiots.

LOL at this and QFE hehe.
