Whether or not a game is "playable" depends on the point in time.  The correct frame of reference would be the state of FFXI during it's japanese release and FFXIV release later this month.  Otherwise, a true comparison based on your experience would need to be a year from now.

From what we know, FFXIV is taking the IDENTICAL path of FFXI.

If you don't think FFXIV is in a playable state, then wait a year or move on.  I for one feel there's a lot in the game that I can enjoy and a lot of stuff that just doesn't bother me.  I would like to be able to sell stuff to a vendor or buy stuff easier.  An AH would be nice.  Retainers need to be tweeked... but other than that, i'm having fun.  So why put off the release for someone like me?

People thought this game was the second coming of Wow, the savior, blah blah.  It turned out to be FFXI 2.0.  For me, that's awesome news.  It doesn't have the polish as FFXI because FFXI has 8 years of release.  FFXIV is no better or worse than FFXI released in Japan.

You make a good point, really, and that is in fact my plan.  My reply had much more to do with the fact that the OP was strongly stating that folks should just shut up about the game's issues (like many other fans) and not talk about it.  The trouble is, there are those of us that really do want to play, but pretty much can't and are hanging out waiting for a fix, or progress.  Meanwhile, folks like yourself who can play the game and enjoy it should.  I've got no issue with that whatsoever and wish you the best of luck in having fun with the game (sincerely).  It's people like yourself that will help SE pay the bills and push the game forward, and I'm glad you guys are out there.

As for the last bit; I wish it were FFXI 2.0.  Were that the case, I'd be all over it with a CE pre-order.  From what I've seen thus far, however and unfortunately, it's not.  That, of course, is just my opinion given that I haven't seen much at all.  However, what little of the world I've run through seems very narrow and constricted with little paths to follow.  That's about the only other gripe I really can have thus far because it's really just not ejoyable enough performance-wise to get a better look at the rest, and that makes me sad.

I just realized this game is 14 days from going live....seriously, I CAN'T WAIT!

I'm not a FFXIV fan, but a fan of MMOs. This is one of the more fun ones I have played, and can see why some don't like it. If you are like me though, and have played every other MMO out there to death and want a change of pace...give it a shot. My computer is between low/med settings and I run with barely a studder. I play with a gamepad, which I do not see what the problem with that is. Makes for a new experience with a world that is very fun to explore.

Don't see why people have to bash the game or tell everyone to buy it. If you hate it, and have a new point for hating it- then tell people. If it is the same reason as the other 10000 posts, I think people have the Idea.

If you want to recommend it; tell people how you feel and suggest they try it themselves.

I dont see why everyone on this website has to just shit talk.... it isn't just in FFXIV. Go to pretty much any of the game forums here and you have the same posts. Kinda depressing.

Of course i know everything wont get fixed at launch, im saying that a lot of the problems will be, ie the UI, i mean a 10mb patch improved it greatly.  The rest will obviously fixed as time goes on

I swear there are far more posters telling people not to rag on the FFXIV beta than there are ragging on the FFXIV beta.  I think we need a third class of individuals who rag on the people ragging on the people who rag on the FFXIV beta.  Or.. just stop, all of you.

Actually some complaints are based on gameplay which in beta should be atleast slightly fleshed out... Yeah, read the other posts before posting your own opinions on those who have their opinions which by the way are JUST THAT.

After reading a TON of posts on either side of this fence, I'd just like to put my personal opinion in here.

    • The game seems desolate. There are of course tons of people trying out the beta right now, and that could excuse some of the barren wasteland without mobs, but there are places where there are no players and there still aren't mobs to grind.

    • It seems like giving out an open beta and not giving everything but the story arc is just silly. You're giving the impression that there is nothing to do outside the story arc. I can see not wanting to show your story arc, but not including all leves seems odd.

    • The controls are a little wonky, but nothing game breaking. I had them figured out in just a few minutes after playing.

    • Did I mention I go like 5 minutes without seeing a single enemy to kill? I can't stress that enough.

    • If you enjoy the game, play it. If you don't, don't, but cmon. Fanboys need to stop acting like this game is God's gift to MMO's and haters need to stop acting like this is the biggest piece of garbage ever released. I guess no one remembers ET for the Atari 2600. I hear there's a landfill somewhere full of them.

Bottom line for me, it's not my thing, so I won't be playing it. I don't mind grinding, as long as there are things to grind. I really do think, however, that SE is making a terrible mistake by not at least giving everyone the leves and timers on leves that they would in live. Like I said, don't give away your story line, but for God's sakes, don't make your game look unfinished and boring either. I hope for the sake of those who kept their pre-orders that this miracle patch does indeed hit the day of launch and makes this game awesome, otherwise, outside of Japan, I forsee a colossal failure on SE's hands.

As a matter of fact almost every MMO has released before it should and thus never recovered for it. I'm sure  alot of the MMOs out there are really good now but no one cares because they tried it out at launch and it sucked.

People buy games when they first come out. if it sucks, they move on. No one should have to wait for crap to get fixed.

You say "no game will be perfect at launch" but you know what? They should be. Or darn close. As a consumer that's what I expect and that's what I look for.

Judging by your avatar, you played ffxi, was that game perfect, hell no, but you know what, i still played until wow came. then quit wow and went right back.  Take that as an example.

    Come on, really?

I bought FFXI within days of its NA release, and it drew me in immediately.  If there were bugs, I didn't feel them.  If there was a lack of content, I didn't notice.  I didn't have a top of the line PC by any stretch of the imagination back then, and it performed suitably to the point that performance was never, ever an issue.  In spite of whatever problems it may have had, the game was both playable and fun, so it didn't need to be perfect.  Also, the game had been out for nearly a year in Japan at its point of NA release.  Add to all that I'd just jumped off the train wreck of bugs that was PlanetSide (in which I participated in beta for quite some time - not to mention it was a true beta-in-a-box) and I was still thrilled over how well the game run by comparison.

Understand; there's a massive difference between 'perfection' and 'playable'.  In its current state, FFXIV is simply unplayable for many - myself included.  Forget the bugs.  The poor performance and worse-than-FFXI UI is so much of a turn-off that I've barely had the motivation to launch the game, let alone play it.  I patch it and check for updates daily in the hopes that something will solve it, but it just hasn't happened yet.  I updated all my drivers, went through tweaking my video settings, and still nothing helps.  Blame my PC if you want - as many want to do - but I, like others, am not on a low-end PC expecting WoW-like performance out of a new game.  Also, I never minded shoving my mouse out of the way and going keyboard-only for FFXI, so I don't even have an issue with that.

Point is; it's a deal-breaker for plenty of folks, and plenty like yourself are just asking everyone to play through it and just wait for it to get better.  Erm, sorry but I'm not going to buy an under-cooked burger and just eat through it and make myself sick.  At best I can nibble at the edges then toss it out and eat fries.  That's pretty much my feeling on FFXIV at the moment, as I find myself more interested in just carrying on in a simple flash-based browser game while browsing forums than bothering for now.  If you'd like to know why I'm still here, making such a post, it's because I am in fact extremely interested in the game at this point - especially after the rush of nostalgia with the game's music and feel - but I'm still waiting to see a significant change that will make the game playable.

You do realize that the NA release for FFXI was ONE YEAR after the official Japanese release?  You actually played FFXI with an expansion and a year's worth of patch/bug fixes.  If you LOVED FFXI during NA release, you should buy FFXIV September 22, 2011.

As for me, I'll have a few lvl 50 classes by September 22, 2011.  See ya then (should you choose to come back).

Thank you. That is kinda my whole point. This game shouldn't be released till next year it seems. Because yes FFXI was pretty close to perfect and had one of the best launches of any MMO I've played BECAUSE it had been out for a year.

I knew that and my whole point is that I would be happy with this game if they did in fact wait until it was ready. Obviously. But I guess developers will still puch out unfinished product because people like you will pay for it. It's a shame your standards are higher because if they were perhaps we, as a gaming community, could probably get a bit more quality in our games. Oh well.

Now that I think of it I'll go a bit onto the speculation side of things and wonder if something was initially planned from the get go that affected 1) windowed mode, 2) UI and it smoothness and 3) server congestion/lag.

I think point #3 is easiest in terms of I'm pretty sure the open beta is not even on the main servers being used for the game launch and on the left over servers occupied by a few of the FF11 servers that were merged into others. In that situation, if that's what occurred, it would've brought down the overall costs of production and beta congestion/lag would be easier to explain. I wonder on the UI and the windowed mode though had ulterior motive. I mean SE could easily accomodate a windowed mode but didn't. Also when I think of it, a full release of the actual UI interface on beta would get some RMT and hackers some extra time to squeeze in actual testing of their programs.

If the case is beta is on a few servers and had modified version of the UI and windowed mode (which really isn't actually as hard as most ppl think) it might be). In that respect it might either be incredibly ingenious if the code was slightly modified to make it buggy to just honestly mess with the expected rmt/hackers and the potential hacks they have in development.

Pending on how you look at it, we could assume 3 things: SE is probably smarter than we are giving them credit for on this, SE hasn't learned anything at all (or much at all), or we can just all except the fact that we won't know what's going on until launch and while we gripe and moan about all of betas problems we all know very well ppl want in early on the game and will play it for that extra tactical launch no matter how buggy it is because they want in early for the right for extra stuff. That last statement can be argued over but even Aion shows that if your game is buggy and you may not even be able to log in, you'll still buy it to want a shot at getting in earlier than later.

It might be beta, but last push they did is probably only real fixes that this game goign to have before launch.

They need at least 8 months to fix the mess this game is before it shoudl actually go live.

Square Enix will just become a Cryptic clone. Delvier poor shoddy crap and hoipe people will stay past the initial month, which most won't. And PS3 sale assuming it ever comes out on PS3 will be affected severly.

This game is mainly targeted at PC players yet they built it for console where 10% of the people that actually play it will be which is really a BAD business decision. but hey this is Square enix they have no clue how to actually build a PC game, sure they know how to do piss poor port of console games though but not how to develop games that actually works well on PC.

An the whole thing about not supporting XBOX because live is too restricting i don't buy anymore after playing beta. It's probably more they not supporting XBOX because well they barely can get this game to work properly on PC and having a hassle doing it on the PS3 you really think they can do it on X360 too. doubt it.

Agreed but almost every single MMO company does the same and so long as people buy the game at launchday this will happen. If a large enough bunch of people waited with any game until it actually was fixed we would force the devs to release the game when it is done.

This is actually the thing that makes me suspect Guildwars 2 will be the MMO of 2011, Arenanet does not release something that isn't ready. That and no monthly fees have always been their 2 top priorities.

I still hope SE will go out and move the release date back a few months to fix this. Any other move will hurt the game (I don't believe in miracle patches). The game do have many things that are good and it would be bad to do a Vanguard and destroy a perfectly fine game because of a bad launch.

That is just a guess. They might already be on their way and know what to fix, with hard work 3 months is not impossible.

But this is still far from Cryptic who bought a popular IP and threw out a little junk and tricked people into buy life time subs before launch. This is just another buggy release, STOs problem wasn't bugs, it was very limited and easy content together with totally screwing over the IP and it's fans. Big difference.

square enix has always been like that. Im 100% sure they will go live like this, and belive me it will be a success because they can satisfy the masses of ff fanboys with this just fine. for the rest: "well tough luck no ff for you, we dont even want you to play our game". its sad that publishers still work like that. the UI alone made me deinstall this game after just a few hours. didnt really get to the content, its just something you cant present a game with (even if it has brilliant gfx). buy some books or hire (western) UI guys.

i was really looking forward for this game but im really dissapointed.

I think this time we will be the ones clearing out the bugs and polishing the game for a neat release in march 2011 on PS3, as everyone in Japan will play this on PS3, not PC.

What I don't understand is since FFXI was released on PC and seemed to work fine, why didn't they implement those settings for FFXIV instead of the clunky & akward controls we have now? (I'm mentioning the controls as an example but the same goes for everything else). Why take a step back instead of improving what was already there? That's beyond me...

If a 5-10mb patch can fix UI lag or mouse lag, and we are getting another 6-10GIGS of content at release with a whole new client, SOMETHING is going to be fixed in that data, and TONS of things will be added.

Truly sad...really. A forums whole purpose is for people to exchange ideas and opinions no one is forcing anything on anyone, we are all grown ups (though sometimes I have my doubts) simply discussing a game. If you can't deal with people that hold a different opinion to you don't engage with them you can always visit a fansite where the forums are heavily moderated and any negative views of the game are censored.

I think, minus a few people who do enjoy this game(and are intent on trying to make everyone feel the same), that most other mmorpg'ers will absolutely hate FFXIV and would be happier with just about any other mmo on the market.  This is probably the biggest mmo disappointment ever and if someone can play it for themselves, they are likely to not waste their hard earned money on it.

Laggy, buggy, featureless, restrictive, lazily implemented, boring and repetitive, all terms that come to mind from playing this game.  The environments are unimaginative(especially compared to the lush surroundings of the previous ff mmo).   The system in place for interacting with other humans is abysmal.  Character creation is very limited(not as bad as WoW but not far from it), you won't feel unique in this game.  There are already tons of goldspammers; why are there goldspammers in an open beta?  The non-storyline quests are beyond being generic, they are so far removed from anything bearing passably interesting that it's painful.  The storyline, what little we do see of it, seems to be substandard for square-enix.   The battle system, while novel, seems to only exist to make the fights artificially slower(to hide lack of content probably) and remove whatever window a faster system would provide for skilled fighting.  The game's ui reeks of I-don't-give-a-crap-about-pc-players and is the most damning thing of all about it.   It's actually worse than ffxi's system which is pretty amazing.  You will literally struggle to find any meaningful content, there are npcs everywhere that just spout of lines that have nothing to do with the story, you or anything else of interest.  Really, just empty placeholder npcs reading off non-sequiters.  There are still massive amounts of errors in translation(sometimes the japanese isn't even changed to poorly worded english)   I'd known none of this had I not played the game myself.

There is some nice music though.  The only reason to love this game is simply because of it's universal final fantasy settings, which was the reason I almost blindly bought the game.  Luckily, I played it before hand.

In short, I'd recommend anyone interested play it before they buy it.

(Oh and for the guy above me, open betas this close to launch are meant to be an advertising force to help spread the word on how fun a game is or to give someone a taste and wanting more.  Hell, the closed betas weren't really used for anything here on the English side of things, the impressions that I and other testers got was that they were simply looking for errors in translation and nothing else, coding was being handled on the Japanese side.)

Couldn't have said it better. Please listen to this guy's advice and try the game.
