Actually, lances were not exclusively a mounted weapon. Short lances wielded by footmen could be found in French armies, at least. They weren't as long and egregiously elaborate as TERA's version, of course, but there is precedent.
I think part of the bigness is that the are trying for realistic range of weapon attacks. From what I have seen, how far you can hit seems to be dependant on the physical size of your weapon. It's the same with the huge axe that berserker carries. If they want you to manually aim, and they want a meaningful range difference from a lance to a sword, say, then they have to make it noticeably bigger.
My concern with this game is that they seem to have gone for cheap thrills in maybe this area and other areas. There's a video of a female character, and explicably the back of her skirt is 2 times shorter than the front. When she runs, she bends over almost on all fours and prances up and down, and you just get nasty butt and panties in your face 24/7.
Now, I like to make female avatars, cause I prefer to looking at them than the male avatars. But this is too much, it's just a cheap thrill. Don't get me wrong, I see nothing morally wrong with it, but it just feels so cheap and nasty.
I thought they were making a quality combat game with great lore and stuff. If it makes me wonder about the quality if indeed the weapon sizes are a cheap thrill and the blatant sexual pandering.
I think people have to revisit what they know about weapons and fantasy games.
It's an asian game and they tend to be very flamboyant with their weapons and armor. It's just the way it is.
I'll agree that the the way the female avatars are being created is a bit over the top and for my taste a little silly in certain aspects. I'm more talking about the casters wiggling their hips before they case.
But again, it is what it is. It's one designers rendition of a fantasy world. Is it any more absurd than a game set in the universe of "Heavy Metal'?
I think your reference might be a bit old for the kiddies that troll this site.

I think you are correct that TERA is just some cheap thrill MMORPG. It will be forgotten as fast as AION has been.

Look at the female with the lance above: Could she be wearing less and not get an M rating? And this is a tank? Talk about ridiculous, forget the size of the lance. ....There is a double entendre in there somewhere but too tired to find it..lol.

I would like to first apologize for the empty post above, but I can't help it but to find the last two quotes very homosexual. If they are fully dress you would like to see more, if they are barely dress you would still complain to say they need to be more dress. The cheap thrill part makes no sense what so ever anyways. You get thrills looking at your character? Really? I get my thrills killing things and owning people. I don't get thrills running around in dalaran in circles around a building, and chatting with my friends while staring at my character fapping.
The lance is a weapon strictly for mounted action and pretty much useless in melee action. Granted it is a fantasy game, but I still have to scoff at such a ridiculous class.

Funny that you say that. The number of subcribers may have droped after release but it sure as hell hasnt been forgotten. Im in no way a Aion fan by the way. Also Tera is expected to have a Mature rating, im going by what En Mase has been saying.
I also must giggle at the comments about the female characters armor and animations feeling "cheap and nasty". How old are you? How bout you grow a pair you ninny.
This is fantasy so even though the weapon is way too big and it would be better calling it a spear it works fine. If magic exists then melee can use stupidly big weapons.
problem with a heavy cavalry lance like that is that it's a blunt tip...
Gotta be on a warhorse and put ur lance against the saddle to have any effect on it.
They could have taken a giant badass spear, but i must say that the cavalry lance was a poor choice imo.
Anyway, imma gonna go for warrior or healer, so i don't mind
You're a Hardcore Survivor!
You not only survived the zombie apocalypse, but did it with style! Your mastery of zombie knowledge, survival tactics, and weaponry is nearly unmatched. Congratulations, for you are hardcore!
Who cares how he can wield such a big weapon, its a FANTASY game. LULZ HOW DO PEOPLE SHOOT FIREBALLS?!?! ofc you cant in real life and never have been able too, thats why its a fantasy game.
Go play AoC, MO or some other low fantasy MMO if you want more realistic weapons. I do prefer the more realistic weapons tbh, but i dont mind the oversized ones as they use alot in asian styled MMO's, even in some western games. Alot of them look really awesome
But when playing Mount and Blade for instance it would be stupid if everyone ran around with those huge weapons.
Regardless whether the lance maybe ridiculous or not, this game looks sick and definitely worth a try. One thing I do know, is that I can't wait to play this.

It is actually more Manga/Anime. In western fantasy large weapons like that were imported first by Blizzard, together with the Manga elf ears. In a high fantasy world like Middle earth it is also silly.
It is an art style and like all art styles some people love them while others hate them. I doesn't tick me off unless everything else is realistic.
Imagine Rand from wheel of time or Conan with a Final fantasy sword, it just looks dumb. But it works fine when Inuyasha or Vash the Stampede use something that is way too large for any effective use.
The largest real weapon that actually been used regularly is the Scottish Claymore. Anything bigger only works if you make a manga like game like FF XIV or Wow. Well, actually a few Chinese monks use a larger sword but it is not something for real battles as far as I know.
Why to many people lancer look stupid and wizard no ? It's simple, wizards (and magic in general) are complete fantasy, there is nothing you can relate with real world. On the other hand melee damage class is something which uses mechanic similiar to how melee fight works in real life.
Lance in hand of melee fighter simply doesnt feel right even in fantasy game.

You are right, the weapons they used in battle are so damn small compared to anything in most video games like WoW etc,
Thats why i enjoy Mount and Blade so much, its very realistic medieval game, most of the weapons and items are very close too what they used back in those days. A friend of mine made a mod pack helmet for it that everyone uses, and he did reasearch on the internet too see what they used and what were the best etc to every detail.

It's less to do with it looking 'realistic' and more to do with it just looking 'stupid'. To be fair it's an asian stylised game so people should have expected it tbh.

A lancer on foot is more realistic than a wizard

The bigger the weapon
More dumb the character looks
The lancer is a perfect example of this xP
"It has potential"
-Second most used phrase on existence
"It sucks"
-Most used phrase on existence

All other things looks like trash
