I foresee spending 6 hours wandering through these '50' instances of retainers (8 or 10 I believe in reality) just trying to find one item and being unable to find it. Much rather spam /sh (shout) sadly...
Or, you can go tell your retainer to find the item for you and be done with it? Or, and this info is hear-say so don't quote me on it, you can use the not yet implemented EvE like market boards.
Eh, I hadn't heard anything about retainers going to look and find items for you, merely that they could be setup as a storefront (and hold equipment and such for you too).
An EvE-like market board is good though. Better than an AH in a number of ways, imho, but it is essentially an AH in terms of ease of use and so forth.
You are one of the many people who complain about the game yet haven't even bothered to read the guide on how it suppose to work. Go read the guide FFS.
Err, I went and looked it up BEFORE I POSTED. I read several sites and none of them had what you were talking about. So I mentioned I hadn't heard about it and I mentioned what I had heard. Maybe you could look to what you are talking about because I can't find it.

Seriously, Xipher, I'd like a link to what you are saying about retainers. I honestly couldn't find it.
There isn't a link because the info is in game. When you talk to the retainer information person, the person that also sells you retainers, you can ask how retainers work. The information about retainers is there.

you cna have your retianer seek an item but as far as i know is you need at least 1 of the items
I told Xpiher about it (and probably didn't do a very good job of it), so I feel obligated to answer for him. The information is in the beta data site under "Game Manual", and here's what it says about retainers for those of you without an account for the beta.
Retainers are useful NPCs who provide invaluable support in your adventuring endeavors. They can be employed on an extendable contract basis to perform myriad tasks such as minding your items and money or operating bazaars, just to name a few. Players may hire the services of a retainer at the Adventurers’ Guild.
To call upon a retainer, take your character near to one of several summoning bells located in each city-state. Once there, select the Retainer command from the system menu.
*During the Beta Test, employing a retainer will not incur a fee.
Retainer Commands
You can perform the following commands with a retainer you have summoned.
- Exchanging Items
Entrust your retainer with items or gil for safe-keeping or take back items or gil you had given to your retainer. You can entrust your retainer with up to eighty items.
- Dealing in Bazaars
Task your retainer with selling items entrusted or buying more of the same item. You can set the sales prices however you like, but the prices cannot exceed the amount of gil with which your retainer has been entrusted.
Even if you have set up a bazaar, unless you conclude your orders, the retainer will not set up the bazaar for operation.
- Releasing a Retainer
Release the retainer from your service. The moment your retainer has been released, all items and gil with which the retainer had been entrusted will be lost.
- Dismissing a Retainer
The retainer will cease all tasks and leave the area.
- Concluding Orders
This command only appears when you have summoned your retainer in a market ward.
If you are setting up a bazaar, your retainer will stay in the area to manage the bazaar. If you are not setting up a bazaar, your retainer will immediately leave the area. You will not be able to summon a retainer who has been ordered to stay in place until that retainer has been dismissed.
So yes, you need at least one of the item. If you need one item PER the amount you're looking for (which I didn't know about), I'm almost certain that it's a bug that will be worked out in time. SE makes curious design decisions, but all of them have at least some rationale behind them and really go a long way to show their mindset. Only allowing you to purchase as many as you already have doesn't have any real purpose behind it, so I'm going with 'bug'. That said, it wouldn't be on the top of the list for beta fixes either, but I do expect it'll be fixed for launch when crafting actually becomes important.

It doesn't sound like your retainer can haggle at all though.

Was that supposed to be a feature? Sorry, I don't pay attention to any of the pre-game hype or discussions much. All that I know about this game is from the Game Manual and other data via the official beta page, and of course the hours I've put into finding issues in the beta itself for bug reports.
Your retainer can sell items, and buy items (assuming you have an item as a means for comparison). If you look at your retainer as being a robot who can only follow commands to the absolute letter, it's perfectly reasonable that they need a 'base' to double check what they're buying from people. Another reason could be that with +1, +2 stuff there have to be thousands and thousands of options for gear and items in this game. If they were to create a system using the internal ID number for the item (to allow your retainer to buy it, even though you don't have one of the item already), there's a good chance that even should someone HAVE the item in question, but of a different quality, it wouldn't be possible to sell it to your retainer using this system. Although incorporating such a thing is possible over time, it would be a heavy task with all of the possibilities at hand for items and qualities. Let's not forget how rare it would be for someone to 'happen' to view your store, and 'happen' to have exactly the piece of gear (and of the same quality) that you're looking for. For all of these reasons, I'm led to the conclusion that buying items using the retainer was a feature made specifically for crafting materials, and this also explains why 'you have to have one to buy more' might not be that huge of a deal. (sorry, this is all unrelated to your response, I just realzed- I just had it on my mind since I posted awhile ago).
Drach, if there were some means of internal 'haggling', buyers would just keep re-doing it starting with a ridiculously low number until they got the lowest possible price they could. The whole system wouldn't serve much purpose in my opinion, and we all know how cheap the average Joe is, and the lengths they go to in order to save a few, well, gil.

I know it doesn't make sense. Xipher said it was there though.
Anyone else find it kind of hilarious that the OP has not come back to validate or even argue his points? this whole thread reeks of a half assed attempt at trolling. Here's the reasons:
1. They didn't even get the name right, this is not FFIX, that was released on playstation before the PS2 even came out. This is FFXIV.. so thats fail
2. He calls this a Review, a review by definition is the critisism of a finished product. MMO's are never finished, if you want a finished game play a console and be happy... however, MMOer's, for lack of a better term, often review the game after release... Last i checked the release date of FFXIV is Sept 30th, not Sept. 11th. so this, is a "preview" not a "review" again, any valitidy in your points are lost here.
3. Every Category the OP sets up he fails, but he fails based on whats been stated time and time again. I tracked a few posts and its almost as though he copied and pasted half of his words from other thread. This is just one other reason your credibility to me as a possible purchaser of this game.... is gone right out the window.
I could go on with these posts but it would be a waste of time... bottom line is, If you're going to write something, especially a "review" you should wait for the product to actually release. Also, you should have done the research a bit more, read the dev's diarys and the like; tried the game, and THEN compare and critique. Finally but probably the most important, take the time to get the name of your topic right. people have asked you repeatedly to change it and you have not. This whole post is a bunch of fail written by someone who has no business writing "reviews"
I know it doesn't make sense. Xipher said it was there though.
He was sadly misinformed, or it's something I just haven't found any information on- either one is perfectly possible.
In response to the above statement about people using "it's a beta" as an excuse- while I understand where you're coming from, and we can both agree that there won't be any monumental changes to the game 'systems' between now and release, the fact still remains that this beta WAS created mostly to test the servers. 90% of the content they've made for the game simply wasn't made available to try out for free. While someone arguing that the UI will receive some huge magical update for launch, that there will suddenly be a "buyer's board" for tracking down goods in the bazaar districts, or that *insert system x here* will suddenly be perfect when it's buggy now obviously has an overly-optimistic view of the future- this game will be much LARGER (if not different) when it gets launched.
To name a few things, the game's explorable areas will be multiplied by ten, much more of the main story-line will be available to play through (though not all of it yet I'm sure), a lot more recipes will be available for every synth-type, Levequests will recharge faster allowing you to get up in levels easier (for those of you who don't understand the logic of SE making these recharge slower for the BETA, it's so that each player will try out a lot more of the content to find existing bugs, rather than repeating one levequest fourteen times to jump to level 10 and then calling it a day), and a lot more Levequests will be introduced (including the faction-based quests).
Let's not forget that optimization is also a big part of what they're working on now (server side issues), so we can expect a fair increase in action responsiveness I think for launch as well. These things aren't naive hopes (aside from the last one, which is a small possibly), but a reality on what will be changed, so claims about some taking the beta too seriously when it isn't the 'real game' aren't entirely unfounded.
Do you play Go? (Weiqi, Baduk, iGo) ------------------------------------------
Im only asking this because i dont know how the retainer system fully works yet...but how is it supposed to benefit anyone by being able to haggle prices? Arent retainers players just afk? not like you can actually talk with them, right?
How does this benefit the player base any better than being able to look up what you want in one easy place to find exactly what you want rather than running all over the place "in hopes" of finding anything you want.

You can't haggle prices. You can only put what price you want to pay for an item if you have it. So this really only works for crafting supplies.
So...wouldnt it be more beneficial to everyone if these items were in one place for everyone to find...if your that cheap to go looking for a better price, you could always shout or pm someone asking to sell that item...at YOUR price. Eventually the gold farmers will come along....ppl will buy the gold...ruin the market anyway no? Happens in every game...what is this really going to help / prevent? I dont see how it's going to help the interaction between players....other than us running around town bumping into each other trying to possibly find something....and making everyone lag because everyone and their mother has a stall set up. Thoughts of L2 and Aion come to mind
Since the stalls are set up in an instanced zone I really can't see anyone lagging as a result.
As for the question of whether this system or an auction house is 'better', that really depends on the perspective. One of the biggest complaints in Final Fantasy XI was that by the time the NA version hit the streets, the Japanese players were able to completely dominate the Auction House and determine whatever value they wanted for things that went up for auction. If you sold something for significantly lower than what was on there to try and change the flow, they'd simply buy it themselves and then re-sell at their own price. Now, I'm not going to say SE has chosen this path because of that specifically, especially since the complaints of the Americans are probably irrelevant to them, but this had to have annoyed even people in the Japanese game population. I think much of what this system goes to fix is in 'market control'. Arguments against this fact using 'supply and demand' as a base are rather naive- sure water might be able to sell for five dollars a bottle just outside of New Orleans, but is it fair to charge that? Absolutely not.
Now, in a game where the players are given a lot of incentive to play multiple 'classes' simultaneously, I know that a lot of you are thinking 'how can anyone control the market when there are so many people creating these items?' but then, remember that a lot of items being price-gouged were drops from mobs (like scrolls), as well as crafting mats that would take weeks to gather if you wanted to be completely self-sufficient. In this system where you need to weed through the dirt to find the diamonds, prices won't be fixed to a number some jerk put up on the board ten times in a row to make his point, it'll be closer to 'what do I think this is worth to someone?' because no one's going to go browsing through everyone's bazaars to figure out what price he wants to sell everything in his inventory at.
Now, these are just some of the advantages, and obviously there are many disadvantages as well, but as this is the system SE has chosen, I wouldn't expect it to change- no matter how great of an argument you make to why Auction Houses make your life easier.

I didn';t mean for you to think that I meant that you could set a price range. I meant that, because of a lack of an auction house, you can haggle on price easier since there isn't a ready and easily searchable price guide. I also meant that you could tell your retainer what price you wanted to buy certain items for.
I'm just saying, I think your average MMO player might try out the title, but in its current state, I doubt they will bring themselves to play it a very long time.
The avg MMO player also think WAR, WoW, and Aion are completely different. Just saying.
I love how MMO's have turned into a sort of gaming race war.
^ ^ post above is basically a racist comment.
Look down your nose all you want, but the AVERAGE mmo player is also the LARGEST GROUP OF MMO PLAYERS...aka the target audience for every game other than super niche games.
The AVG mmo player/game is just what I want to avoid.
The AVG mmo is complete and utter garbage and has been for a long, long time. Basically, since the first EQ clone. FFXIV isn't much different, but the central story is enough for me to enjoy the game until I beat it, just like every other MMO that I've played until cap/story content ran out.
The AVG mmo player doesn't think he/she is grinding when doing the same quest/raid 5k. If you have fun doing that more power to you, but catering to that is exactly why most MMO vets are getting tired of MMOs in general and go berserk when anything out side the norm may be released.
If SE is making FFXIV to be a niche game then more power to them, but I highly doubt it.
SE has their market in Japan, the rest of the world is simply extra for them in terms of recuping cost
Also, just as a side note, every single one of your posts is overflowing with a need to be better than the people you are responding to. That is no way to argue a point. Condescension (sp?) gets you no where in this world. Try coming at things from an angle that promotes intelligent response, not just "I'm a smarter/better gamer with the perfect most refined tastes and all the knowlege in the world so I'm better than you!"
If you feel that way maybe I was hitting close to home :P
PPS. I notice you dodged the one fellow's response to your statement that he should read his facts before posting...you know the one where he told you he had in fact done just that and was unable to verify ANY of what you were saying? Please respond to that so as to tie up that loose end in this conversation.
The information about retainers finding stuff for you is inside the game when you talk to the retainer person and ask him/her what do retainers do. The information about how leves are suppose to work for launch is on the beta site which to access you need to have a user name and PW which is why I didn't link it. Both questions were answered by other people in this thread.
Wow I didn't realize the "reviewer" was looking forward to SWTOR. Hes what I'm talking about when it comes to your avg MMO/player. SWTOR is nothing more than the same crap in a different package aka A WoW clone with a SW skin.
The game does not use active combat, it gives the illusion of using active combat. All the blocks and weapon clashing happens based on character stats and dice rolls. The game uses global cool downs for skills and is designed to make you feel "epic" on day one. The only cool thing about SWTOR are the story missions, everything else is done exactly like WoW.
Actually, if you read up on SWTOR you might actually find that you'd be interested in it. It's got a personal story too, AND CONTENT! I know I know, LIMITED CONTENT BETA ALERT, but I've played the OB for a few days now and I want to slit my wrists with how little there is to do besides grind.
Also, why wouldnt you want quests that help to mask the grinding? You prefer to literally just sit around fighting tiny squirrel rabbit creatures, and walking bushes for 600 hours till top level and then raid?
Either way, I think you need to start adding the term "in my opinion" to your rants about how every game sucks, and average gamers are idiots/noobs with poor taste and no minds.
The sleeper awakes...and rides his dirtbike to the mall.

Why do I have to state "in my opinion" for everything I say. Just by saying something that is subjective the "IMO" is implied. Also, I don't like any form of grind, quest or mobs and I don't distinguish between the two. If all a game has, content wise, is nothing but a WoW copy then I may as well be playing WoW.
That is the impression I get from SWTOR. It doesn't help that the SW IP is prefect for a non-faction based PvP game, yet BioWear and EA turn it into a faction game. SW is also the prefect IP for an action orientated combat system, but instead of giving you an action orientated combat system they give you the illusion of one. The same thing about being "epic". Sorry, taking out 5 guys at once isn't "epic" if its not hard and if every other class/person in the game can as well. The entire game feels like a ball of lies.
About the "grind" in FFXIV: 90% of the game isn't in this includes story line (the bulk of the game), 100s of craftable items, guild leves, the ability to do the same guild leve 4 times in a 24hr period, etc. The game will not be a huge grind unless you want to be completely self-sufficent, or you are like me and can't stand the illusion of not grinding. The saving grace that will stop that is if the time investment for leveling is minor. It appears to be so with questing.

Any guess as to how much story is in FF14 is pure speculation.
Right now you can finish your 48 hours worth of Regional guild leve's in 2 hours or less. I can't imagine that it is going to be possible to advance your character without grinding. Even the casual player will probably be somewhat effected by this, especially on weekends.

Seriously, Xipher, I'd like a link to what you are saying about retainers. I honestly couldn't find it.
There isn't a link because the info is in game. When you talk to the retainer information person, the person that also sells you retainers, you can ask how retainers work. The information about retainers is there.

So um.. The OP can't properly spell the name of the game he's playing? FFIX was released 10 years ago...
Sigh give me a min

you cna have your retianer seek an item but as far as i know is you need at least 1 of the items
Yeah from what I can tell you need one of the items to have your retainer try to buy it.
The lady that issues retainers (in LL) has a small tutorial on what they are and do.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
More than that. At the moment you need 1 for every item you wish to buy.
So if you want to buy 1 you only need 1. If you want to but 10 you need 10.

I love the "it's beta!" excuse 9 days before the game goes live... Always repeated and always wrong. Over 10 years now...
Nadriell

------------------------------------------
Im only asking this because i dont know how the retainer system fully works yet...but how is it supposed to benefit anyone by being able to haggle prices?
Do you play Go? (Weiqi, Baduk, iGo)

I didn';t mean for you to think that I meant that you could set a price range. I meant that, because of a lack of an auction house, you can haggle on price easier since there isn't a ready and easily searchable price guide. I also meant that you could tell your retainer what price you wanted to buy certain items for.
