From the minute I loaded FF XIV up in closed beta I thought it felt like a badly ported console game, I had such high hopes for this game after enjoying XI, but my time in the beta's really has put me off buying it now.
Amen.
Funny to hear this coming from an ex-FFXI player. FFXIV is a little klugier in some ways, but it's actually got less consolitus in the interface than FFXI has. Consider it actually has a working hotbar, for example.
No it isn't funny to hear. FF11 was released November 7, 2002. That was 8-1/2 years ago. Let that sink in for a second.
People expect more from a game being developed for 2010-2011. Since hardware and software has been improved 10-fold they rightfully should. What is with people allowing cheap and easy development in MMO's these days? I have no idea.
They did a nice job adding a hotbar though. *sarcasm

No it isn't funny to hear [that it would be funny ot say FFXIV has a console interface if you're used to FF11]. FF11 was released November 7, 2002. That was 8-1/2 years ago. Let that sink in for a second.

I'm sorry, I can barely hear you over the fact you're choujiofkono, the guy who actully sat down and painstakingly poured over FFXIV maps finding patterns in order to argue that FFXIV did "copy/paste development," choosing repeatedly to overlook that using premade assets in this manner is the standard in any game with large open maps, or that it hardly matters when the game looks like this. Maybe that's a bit ad hominem, but the thing is that I know you have an agenda, and it makes me wonder why I should bother arguing with you.
But, okay, focusing extra hard to get past that... huh. Yes, I see it. You're insisting that a console-friendly interface is some kind of technical failure to have in 2010-2011.
Interesting:
Now, you are aware this game is being released for the PS3 next year, that consoles still exist and require interfaces, right?
How about that this game will likely undergo concurrent development for both platforms and it just makes sense for the developers to try to come up with a unified interface that serves both games instead of trying to come up with two radically seperate interfaces?
Maybe that Final Fantasy XI did just fine, even better than EverQuest, with its console-friendly interface on its PC release?
Pick a point and they all refute the idea that it's such a carnal sin to have a console interface in 2011. Put them altogether and you've not a leg to stand on. What you could say is that such an interface would force a user who is not used to it to adapt, this is true, but then you lose the whole "it's high time people innovate" thing because it's not like a point-and-click interface is all that new, either. Who is to say that the point and click interface is automatically superior? If more people were used to it, what if it turned out that the console-friendly interface was the wave of the future? I think I'd need a study done to determine that.
Moving on, the next thing you do is insist that a console-friendly interface is "cheap and easy." Funny, because from a development standpoint, it's actually harder and more expensive to design and create an interface that is compartmentalized in such a way that it places an entire MMORPG's functionality within reach of a gamepad, and also more expensive and harder to make an interface that runs differently from the (by default) point and click interface of a Windows OS.
And then you blast them out of the water for trying to meet you halfway by adding a hotbar. Real nice.
Yeah, you're still choujioofkono alright, your goals are certainly the same. Good luck finding that Final Fantasy VII game you really wanted.
Well, I have a killer system (somewhat) killer internet connection. Was really hoping to play this game. I have been around the gaming since I beta tested the very first online game and realize you read between the lines and take peoples opinions with a grain of salt. But with this many people saying this many negative things about this game. It is obvious it's "Game Over"
I've struggled with this game long enough.... It looks pretty but beyond that goes downhill quickly.
Performance really sucks. This is shocking since most asian games perform amazing and look amazing. I have a quad core intel processor running at 2.66ghz, 4gb ram, a GTX 465 with 1gb ram, and win 7 64 bit. The mouse and most everything initially lagged when I made the window match my resolution. I tried turning down every option to no avail it would still be laggy. Finally I got it into full screen and performance was tolerable. Then I ran into crashing issues. Beyond that casting spells is difficult, I have to target something, select the spell then I think target it again. Whatever the issue it is far from fluid and is difficult to play. There is no global chat or anyway I can see to ask for help.
Maybe I haven't stuck it out long enough but this game is just not fun. And I haven't really even gotten started in it.
ever heard of cleaning the dust out of your system? im running this on a an Nvidia 9400 GT and I have set it to where the mouse gets 0 lag. and i use a dual core AMD 2.0 GHz processor ....system doesnt even run hot....the fan ran crazy when there was dust buildup though....but is now very quiet since i cleaned it out.

Makes me sad too
It is far from Game Over. This game will do great. You have been around here since 04 and you haven't learned that this site is so far biased on the negative side of MMO's that if you went by it every MMO in the world would be "Game Over"?

Sorry, but that is just a persecution complex. In reality, there are more devoted fans here ready to do damage control than pretty much anywhere... and the admins go after people who are too negative on a regular basis.
If you notice, the defenders here always go after the other posters to discredit them rather than the points made.
Feigning persecution is fairly common though. Just look at the "war on christmas"... Christians make up 80% of the country and they are still claiming persecution. Same old thing.

My fax has a friggin hotbar, how does that have anything to do with technology or improvement of software? How does a hotbar need a better hardware?
Just FYI, Software has not improved since the early Apple and XEROX OS design. Yeah, you still use the same windows/button/icon mouseclicky interface as back then. So please show me those amazing technological advances.
Just because every game uses a hotbar does not make it the correct choice. I prefer the FFXI system. Less crap on the screen more room for the graphics. I don't need the interface monstrosities some WoW players create and call an interface.
Personally, i don't even need a hotbar. In FFXI most of the time i type the spell into the command window beacuse with the sheer amount of spells and abilities available its faster than to scroll through 5 hotbars or click with a mouse.
I am faster typing "/ma Cure playername" than selecting the player with a mouse, then finding the icon in one of my hotbars and clicking on it.
It's just that most of the games are so dumbed down that you can get by spamming 5-6 spells on the 1-6 keys. Thats hardly an advance, am i right?

We have pretty much the same pc specs except for I have 8 gigs of ddr3 memory. I don't experience any of the issues you are having.
also gotta remember ffxi was made with the ps2 in mind so graphic limitations and other things UI wise cant compare the two games now ffxiv well have to see how it fairs in the ps3 version if it was limited as well or not :P

Oh so the process wow, eq2, eq1, daoc, ac1, and uo used is finally out of style? Oh wait, no it's not... *yawn* It's par for the course.
