Just a quick question to Gurps. Why are you relying so heavily on what the Beta Manual states? Do you believe everything you read on the internet? I sure hope not.
Like I said, the HD space thing is certainly possible. I don't too often actually verify if what the box says it takes / needs is actually what it is taking. Only games I have installed now are EVE online and Sims3 and don't have the boxes for either one at my disposal at the moment.
SE are no different to any other developer. The only other MMO they have produced is FF XI, so you have absolutely nothing to found those claims on.
Open beta is not stress testing. They've already done stress tests, and informed us when they were taking place. Open beta is there to continue testing the whole game, other than the locked story arc.
One isn't going to wake up on launch day, and discover a new game.
Actually, once again I'll reference their very own beta manual which in fact states that the open beta is being used to gather information regarding server stability. So, see my above post and gather your facts to be taken seriously.
Correct it is, but it is also for testing everything else. They have not stripped out the game for stress testing, for one that wouldn't be logical, as its not exactly stress things if its cut down code. Only the thing locked is the story arc, next to none of it is in.
I have the beta manual open in another window and I'm wondering where you're getting your information? NOW I'll admit the manual simply states that only a fraction of what the game will have at launch is available at beta could in fact mean that only the story part is missing, but I'd wager a doughnut that there's probably more. Not to mention the game is supposed to be 15gigs on the hard drive and the beta is just under 7 (of course that could be a lot of sound or video files too so that's nothing to really base any argument on.)
The game is not 15Gb. That is the recommended space need for install. All games need much for to install then to run. APB for example says it needs 15Gb, but actually uses 8.4Gb once installed.
Again, you are reading between then lines and coming to the wrong concusion.
I'm getting the information from the same places as you, ie. the beta boards. Also information from the odd moments they actually communicated with us in close beta.
AOC site says Age of Conan requires 32GB and takes up 31GB on my HDD. It's not ridiculous that only a small part of the game is available for beta. They are getting the information they need. I'm not saying I am 100% certain we'll be seeing a "miracle patch" or a ton of added content. I would much rather trust what SE has said over random MMORPG.com community members. I suppose we'll see if trusting SE in future projects is the right decision. Funcom sure doesn't have my trust anymore.
AoC has been out for a few years, hence patches and even an expansion. Of course its going to be closer to what the recommened space is.
Just a quick question to Gurps. Why are you relying so heavily on what the Beta Manual states? Do you believe everything you read on the internet? I sure hope not.
Obviously not, or else I'd have to blindly believe hogwash reviews like this now wouldn't I? Like a poster a bit above me said, It's considerably easier to put faith in what the developer says about their game than what a random member of this community (Especially THIS community) says about it. If it were SOE or Cryptic my opinion would be in a different direction entirely, but I've never been stung by Square-Enix before, they've always been pretty honest about their games.
Just a quick question to Gurps. Why are you relying so heavily on what the Beta Manual states? Do you believe everything you read on the internet? I sure hope not.
Probably because one hopes that people who have been making games for this long aren't lying directly to their loyal customer's faces.
Well written review that seems to fit the overall impression I am getting from a lot of sources. I loved FFXI quite a bit, but I always hoped that when they decided to make a new game they would improve on a lot of the things that FFXI really had wrong like the UI and such. FFXI to it's credit is a really old game so I somewhat excuse the fact that it was made the way it was, but this is 2010 and the bar is a lot higher. From most accounts it seems that SE is pretty far out of touch with what will make this game attractive to a western market. I don't think anyone really is going to be willing to put themselves through these sort of issues unless they are a big fan of the Final Fantasy franchise.

They aren't lying. He's just reading to much into it. Its understandable, as I'd guess most here were hoping for FF XIV to be the next great MMO.

The AoC beta test file was 26GB. Still closer.
Edit: Sorry, forgot to mention I don't have to expansion. I think it's another 13 gigs.

I agree exactly with what you said.
Many reviews I have read are alike to my own and are stating the same things. In my years of MMO playing since Everquest I have never seen so many reviews that were similar in nature and criticized the same things. This just proves further to me that many of the reviews are based more on facts than opinions.
As for those of you who think launch day will be drastically different than open beta...I have yet to encounter an open beta that transitioned into launch that was a much different game. WAR, WOW, Aion, EQ2 etc...all those games were very similar from open beta into launch day. There is not much they can do to "fix" a game without changing it entirely.
I really wanted to see FF14 get a lot of spotlight, but not in this negative way.

Being overly optimistic with their manual can be viewed as not lying. After all they probably would not want to scare off anyone that takes the manual with 100% certainty.

And you're not? Like I said previously, you and I seem to be at opposing ends of the spectrum. I take what they say with a note of faith, you take what they say with a not of cynicism. Each of our stances are opinions so neither is wrong until release I suppose, at which point one of us looses I guess.
I've never been dissapointed or felt like I've been cheated in any way by Square Enix, if they say that a vast (I'm quoting here) majority of their game isn't available at the open beta, then I'm going to believe them.

The review is well written, but looking at certain key phrases in his reviews and his other posts (tagging people who disagree with him as 'fanbois' is usually a clear roadsign on what side of the fence someone is) has me convinced that the OP isn't half as objective as he poses out to be.
Based upon his post history, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being extremely negative opponent (hater) and 10 being extremely positive proponent (fanboi) and 5.5 neutral, I'd rate the OP's general stance towards FFXIV/SE a 2.5.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
ok say the OB is withholding content, still doesnt save the fact that the targetting system is by far the worst i have yet to see from a p2p game
Oh heavens yes, the targeting and pretty much anything involving the UI is pretty much solid garbage. I can't tell you how frustrated I am that I can't sort my inventory or that the game doesn't remember a profile for when I switch classes, instead I have to work a macro or manually put in all my skills again, not exactly an on the fly solution.
It is undeniable that this UI is abhorrent, the Eastern players may dig this kind of thing but it's akin to driving a spike through my eyeball, why does just operating the basic menu have to be such a chore?!

The majority of the content is indeed abscent, but what you are failing to see is that its the story line. There won't be new content (as such), but a continuation. It will be the story line and grinding (directly or through leves), as it is now. Fundamently its single player content along the lines of their console games, with basic (other than for the crafting) MMO mechanics wrapped around it.
ok say the OB is withholding content, still doesnt save the fact that the targetting system is by far the worst i have yet to see from a p2p game
I hate the delay in everything I do. Crafting, placing actions on the bar, and anything else on that UI takes forever. On the other hand the targeting system I thought was very good. What do you dislike about it?
Edit: I just thought about trying obtain a target and my friends complaining about it. I just click most of my targets and hadn't really noticed it. But I'm still curious what else about it was bad.

It doesn't fee intuitive, I have to cycle through things to get to the target I want which would be almost ok if it went through a cycle in a way that made sense. I don't know I just can't put my finger on it but unless I am RIGHT NEXT to the thing I want to target I know i'm in for a headache trying to target it at all. This is just my two cents, maybe I'm just bad at targeting.
well, the game plays better with controller, and when you're exploring and are attacked by an aggressive mob, hitting the target button will alot of times select a mob in the distance and you need to scroll through til you get the correct target, by then ive lost a good amount of hp, have my target keys bound to the dpad so its very easy to access, still the game doesnt want to cooperate
UI does work better with controller but still garbage

Yes I am failing to see this because it's not written anywhere other than your posts. Weird. I'm bored with you and am talking about something else now. You can win, have some internetz.
Actually they informed us that the story line wouldn't be fully unlocked until retail. They also listed all types of content, that would be available at retail. What was listed (by type) is in the game.
I was planning on ordering a controller for this and street fighter. I guess ask me in a few days what I think about targeting =/
if you have a 360 just use that controller
I do but they discontinued the wireless receiver adapter-majig. Now I can either order one from Hong Kong, buy an expensive package deal from Microsoft, or have to deal with an annoying wired controller.
