If we all had instant travel in the real world, people wouldn't have bothered to build an extensive road network.  Would you still want a car if there were nowhere to drive it?

That only works if you've been there once before.  Would you like to walk all the way from Canada to USA?  I know I wouldn't.

i would. i woudl walk to the next point then  go back for the night. pop over to the point last unlokced and walk more. much easier when you have those points, getting back takes no time, but i can take my sweet time unlocking them without haveing to travel all the way there and all the way back.  i can do it in incriments.  and when i get ther ei can always just pop back and forth.

and the point is if you have a mount you are basicly bypassing events that happen just to get somwhere and thats not what this game is about. the main system is events.

And what if you want to get somewhere inbetween those two points ASAP for whatever reason.. possibly event-related?

Mounts = timesaver, in a lot of cases.  They can also be a lot of fun.. and, for me, add in an amazing war-like feeling to a game.

If you have a mount you are not 'basicly bypassing' events if you choose not to.

Final point, if you add in mounts, there is no reason why the distance between each waypoint can't be increased from eachother (expanding the world).

have you seen how freaking close the points are? you can handle the 2-4 minutes

Have you seen my other point in this thread, about mounts being too good in a PVP situation?

you never made a good one accually.

Did I say it was a well written point? no.  What I am saying is that there could be more to mounts than just pve.  Quit being so shallow and expand your mind a little.

What better way to express your individuality than to have a mount that looks exactly like everyone else's?  And to never actually pull it out, just like everyone else also doesn't, because it has no point?

It really isn't that hard to come up with better uses for the limited game development resources available.

When asked if there were mounts in game, ANet neither confirmed nor denied them.  Seeing as how map travel works, I would doubt that mounts will be included.

    Perhaps later on.

On the other hand, with map travel working the way it does, mounts could be looked at as a purely fluff thing. And something thats fluff would constitute a good candidate for a cash shop item.

And i think this is the option they keep open, when they neither conform nor deny

Yes that has been said already.

But f you used the mounts for other than just taking yourself from point A to point B they could get useful. Like having tournaments with jousting, or old styled chariot races.

It would be really cool with a bunch of knights charging into a gang of players with their lances gleaming...

But as I said earlier, it is most likely for an expansion anyways. The mechanics for it is actually in the game already but if and when they actually appear is unknown.

? Care to elaborate on that, those mechanics?

Do you mean the asura  golems?

The reason why ANet won't add mounts is a little different imo. ANet doesn;t want us to skip content. they want us to travekl the land and see all the details they put into game. To find out all the hidden events. unless there is planned a mounted combat I seriously doubt we will see mounts.

  • garretthgarretth Member UncommonPosts: 343

I'd only want a mount if it were done well.  Mounts always seem to add diversity.  Some folks collect them.  I'm an avid collector.

In a game like Aion which is so linear, mounts wouldn't add much beside a way to customize your character and pure enjoyment factor.   Will GW2 be linear?

The devs want their game to succeed and i have faith in their decisions.  If they don't think that mounts would increase the enjoyment of the game, then I'm ok with that.

Mounts are very much like pets or companions to me....especially if I solo a lot.  Instead of talking to myself,  I can talk to them.  :P

Be nice if mounts were nothing more then an extra backpack slot we could have.  We could lead them around as they carry our junk.

Aye. Would bring a nice, more realistic way to haul all the stuff you collect around. Haha

how dare you say that holding 20+ swords in a backpack, 5 in a phanny pack, 10 in 2 bags and 10 in anouther bagh all at the same time while they are invisivble is unrealistic!

    I 100% disagree with this!

I feel no game should have mounts. Well maybe not no game. Yet travel should be a bigger more thought out part of a game. Not just slap on a mount and call it good.

There so much more that could be done with this element to any game. Be it move speed skills and buffs like the old school bard. Or a trader with a wagon that you hitch a ride with has he goes to do his trading errands.  Be it summons, teleporting or trade skill jumbo. There is just so much more that needs to be done with travel in a game to make the world more alive.

I just see this as a very under development part of most games. Just giving everyone mounts is not the full answer.

Wow you actually play MMO games based on mounts??? That's.. shallow, very shallow. This is the same as someone saying "I won't play this FPS because it doesn't have flamethrowers."

And besides, if walking in other MMOs takes too long to get somewhere in an acceptible time, it doesn't mean it's going to be the same in GW2. So yeah.. no mounts and I welcome this decision - mounts ruin everything.

Edit: I just wish Anet would add a big inscription "NO MOUNTS HERE" in their FAQ on the official site. I hate these "will there be mounts" threads.

I've played my share of MMORPG's and yes...no mounts - no play.     Even in WoW it is crazy that we have to run all over the frikking place the first 20 levels.   From level 1-20 you spend 80%, roughly, of your time running from place to place and all it is doing is eating up valuable time - just running around!   Atleast if you are going to have us run from Durator to the Barrens, back to Durator, then back to the Barrens and then to Durator(yes you do this repeatedly to become a Troll Shaman), then to Orgrimmar, back to the Barrens - at least give us a stinking mount.   No I am not asking for stuff to be handed to me on a silver platter, I actually like traveling...but not at a slow arse jogging pace clean across zones!   You may like it and enjoy it...enjoy.   I do not.

You were spoiled by all the new patches from WoW back in the day leveling was harder and getting your first mount felt like an achievement... now leveling to 20 takes no time and you make money right away to get your mount, so you want a game with less inmersion?

  • WolfenprideWolfenpride Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 3,988

Not that i've been keeping up with this game, but mounts are hardly a gamebreaking feature, they're just a speed buff when you get right down to it.

The only difference is it's obviously visual, and if that is what turns you off from a game, then let it be known you have rather shallow tastes and expectations.

From what I've seen and gathered from the interviews, GW2 will have more ways and spots of instant-travel than any other MMORPG, so I doubt that you will have any periods of long travel times if you don't want to.

To each his own I guess. For some, mounts are an integral part to the gameplay experience. There are MMOs out there for them, but GW2 may not be the one for them. For those who don't care about mounts, then GW2 may be for them. Everyone has their own characteristics of what an MMO should have.

IMO, if mounts add to the gameplay experience, add them. If not, don't. If mounts don't fit the gameplay at all, it can take away from the gameplay experience. Yes this also includes lore. You can't really judge the necessity of mounts in a game that you haven't played. What worked for WoW may not work for GW2. They are two different games, with different philosophies on where they want to take their game.
